American gets 1-year prison sentence for parody video

Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (CNN) -- Shezanne Cassim, the American jailed in the United Arab Emirates after posting a video parody, was sentenced Monday to one year in prison and a fine of 10,000 UAE dirhams (approximately $2,700).
The young American living in the UAE has been imprisoned since April, his family says, for posting what was intended to be a funny video on the Internet.
He was accused of defaming the UAE's image abroad, according to The National, the country's main English-language newspaper.
The video in question is a 19-minute short that pokes fun at a clique of Dubai teens who are influenced by hip-hop culture. In the 1990s, the label "Satwa G" was coined for a group of suburban teens who were known to talk tougher than they really were.
The video depicts a look at a "combat school" in the suburb of Satwa, where these "gangsters" are trained. The training includes how to throw sandals at targets, using clothing accessories as whips, and how to call on the phone for backup.
    Tight-lipped about charges

Cassim's family says the 29-year-old has been charged with endangering national security.
The charges were not read out in court. UAE officials would only say "Mr. Cassim was charged under the UAE's penal code. Anyone charged with a crime under the laws of the UAE is entitled to the fair trial protections contained in the UAE's constitution."
Cassim, from Woodbury, Minnesota, moved to Dubai in 2006 after graduating from college to work for PricewaterhouseCoopers.
He and some friends made and posted the video online in 2012. He was arrested in April.
He was interrogated and arrested in Dubai before being transferred to a maximum security prison in Abu Dhabi. His family says it was five months before he was notified of the charges against him.
    'It was just for fun'
In an interview with CNN on December 5, Cassim's brother, Shervon, said Shezanne had made the video for fun.
"It was just for fun. It was -- he's a big fan of sketch comedies. He's a big fan of 'SNL,' 'Funny or Die,' all those shows, and he and his friends just wanted to make a funny sketch comedy in their spare time," Shervon Cassim said.
"There was no indication in local law that making a comedy video, making fun of teenagers in the suburbs, was a threat to the UAE's national security."
Family members said they had spoken to him when he was allowed a phone call out.
"He tries to put on a brave face," Shervon Cassim said. "He said that he was doing fine, not to worry about him, but I could just sense that he's a little depressed -- my impression is that he's going just a little bit crazy in his cell."

    Looking at Mathloom's posts:

It seems in compliance with local laws in the UAE to "defame" the USA's image abroad and to post anti-American and Al Qaeda propaganda from the UAE.

Just doesn't seem fine to post something that could be seen as a parody of the UAE.

Maybe Mathloom should worry about freedom of speech in his own country before he keeps posting anti-American propaganda on an American website.

For a second there I was outraged at the injustice done to this young man, then I realized this thread is actually targeted at Mathloom and my Care Meter immediately dropped down to zero.

The UAE is one of the most liberal of all the other Arab countries in the region. But even though they have so many "American/European" things to do, places to see, etc, they still have their laws and customs that are very much in line with conservative Muslims.

This young man lost perspective on freedom of speech and really how we take that for granted here. As I have mentioned for the Indian diplomat that was stripped searched and arrested...KNOW THE CUSTOMS OF THE COUNTRY YOU ARE SETTING YOUR FOOT IN...We really take so many things for granted here, and once you're off American soil, be prepared for the world to hate you, bc sadly, the American Image is totally tarnished. Things and behaviors we find acceptable could cost you your freedom elsewhere in the world.

Sadly, this is true. Just goes to show you how much of a free speech hellhole the other ones are.

He didn't lose perspective on freedom of speech. The Muslim world did.

You don't seem to believe in universal human rights, huh?

What if in "their world" racial discrimination against black people would be one of the "rules"? Would you just shrug like this then, too?

    We all know the answer.

Seriously - we need to get off the oil so we can ignore the backwardsassness of the middle east like they deserve, let them bump on back to obscurity.

Seriously - we need to get off the --- uh nothing, so we can ignore the backwardsassness of Europe. OH WAIT NO, instead let's have a golden age, and send them translated documents that will inspire the Renaissance

history moves in phases. I don't think the Middle East will bump back to "obscurity", just like Europe eventually sank out of the Dark Ages (thanks largely to the Middle East).

Can we just leave these guys alone, stop giving them money, and let them kill themselves off in a fight with Israel?

Israel can use the new google battle robots. It'll be quick

RR, with all due respect, I'm surprised at your response. This is not how countries usually react to something like this. If they're really ticked off, you might spend a couple of days in jail, but what they typically end up doing, in my opinion, is to show you the door. Putting your arse on the next jet to anywhere. Putting the fellow in prison for a year is beyond absurd.

It would be sad if an entire culture were to get wiped off the face of the planet.. but they would be bringing it upon themselves.. sometimes on the other end of the spectrum is the USA.. It also risks bringing doom upon itself

    Simple karma
