U.S. Border Patrol agent shoots dead Mexican migrant

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - A U.S. Border Patrol agent shot and killed a 22-year-old Mexican who was crossing illegally into the United States, U.S. police said on Saturday.

The agent shot Francisco Dominguez, who had crossed into Arizona with family members and other migrants, while trying to take him into custody, Cochise County Sheriff's Office spokesman Carol Capas said.

She declined to give further details, including why the shooting occurred, because of an ongoing investigation. A spokesman at a U.S. Border Patrol office in Tucson, Arizona, could not be reached for comment.

Mexico's Foreign Ministry said it instructed the Mexican Embassy in Washington to investigate the shooting of Dominguez, who came from the state of Puebla.

"The ministry is concerned about these kinds of situations of disproportionate violence that lead to the loss of human lives," it said in a news release.

Every year, thousands of Mexicans risk their lives sneaking across the 2,000-mile border, much of it desert, looking for work to escape poverty.

The millions of illegal Mexican immigrants who work in the United States annually send billions of dollars home to their families.

Last October, President Bush signed legislation to build 700 miles of fencing along the U.S. border, despite massive street protests by opponents and condemnation by Mexico's government.

Immigration is seen as a threat to employment by many Americans. Supporters of the fence say it is also needed to keep out drug smugglers and terrorists.

sad to lose a human life but at the same time they were crossing illegally. maybe when the wall goes up, it would slow it down enough.

When I read this thread topic, my first though was the the scene in The Untouchables where Sean Connery blows the brains out of a dead guy while "interrogating" him to get another guy to talk.

As to this, we don't know any of the facts of the case. Although like jo said if the other case is any indication the agent's probably going to go to prison for the rest of his life even if the guy who was breaking the law (AKA the illegal) was shooting at him with an AK-47.

Well, being shot at would probably provide a self-defense justification; so presumably not, even if he was a private citizen rather than an on-duty patrol agent. You also figure if evidence as favorable as an armed, firing perp were available, the Cochise County Sheriff's Office/Border Patrol would be inclined to disclose it upfront, although I'm way too ignorant of investigative procedures to presume so.

That having been said, I do agree that anyone, anywhere who ever breaks the law should be shot and killed on the spot, with full and absolute benefit of the doubt given to the officer. That includes you, shoplifters, speeders, underage drinkers, non-seatbelt wearers and software copyright infringers.

lol no kidding.... those other 2 agents probably should have been fired for tampering, but prison?? ehhhh. they shot him in the butt, he's alive, gets free reign in the US, and got a nice lump sum of money, probably more than any of us will ever see.

as to this, none of us know the full details. the migrant probably threw a rock at the patrol agent. does this justify firing at him?

police officers shoot and kill people, you just never know what will happen in the heat of the moment.
