Can somebody explain what K1 is and why Tyson would do it besides money? I don't have a clue about this sport-- is it like that octagon thing?

Tyson Looks to Japan for Income

    By The Associated Press

Mike Tyson is looking outside boxing to pay some of his debts. The former heavyweight champion has signed a deal with a martial arts promoter in an effort to diversify his income. The agreement, according to Japan's K-1 organization, gives it certain management rights and rights of refusal for Tyson's activities in Japan.

It apparently, however, doesn't call for Tyson to engage in a martial arts contest with K-1 star Bob Sapp, who Tyson challenged after viewing one of his matches in Las Vegas earlier this month.

Tyson, who hasn't fought since stopping Clifford Etienne in February, recently filed for bankruptcy protection in New York. Recent filings indicate Tyson owes $17 million in back taxes and another $10 million in other debts.

    Aw SWEET! I was right!

I made a thread right after the incident mentioned occured. K-1 is basically like kick boxing, IIRC. You can knee and kick as well as box.

Bob Sapp is a freaking huge guy. I'll try to find my thread for more info, I guess.

    edit: Here it is.

He's going to get railed, those guys are awesome. Getting kicked in the head, well, you can't really shake that off.

Not to mention the hits to the legs suck too. It is hard enough for your legs to last a few rounds boxing without getting hit. What happens when they start getting pounded on?

IIRC, the next PPV of K-1 is in October, though I forgot what day. I think they are finishing up the tournament that they started in my thread. They may talk more about it then.

Yeah, he is dead meat. They show that stuff on ESPN2 sometimes, very cool. There is also some 290 pound former LB for the Falcons who fights over there, not in K-1, but in some modified version where they allow throws, they call him King Kong. I read about him in ESPNmag.

Is it full contact anything goes --is kicking allowed?-- or is it just fists and knees?

I've only seen it once or twice, but I think you can. I can't really remember. Most of those Japan fighting shows are pretty hardcore, such as Pride, so I'd imagine that they can do that.

I really forgot. I may ask around and see if anyone I know remembers.

edit: Ooops. I was only talking about the kicking part. I think SamFisher is right about the elbowing part. I don't recall ever seeing them.

I think K-1 is just fists, kicks and knees, no elbows. It is still pretty intense though.

That Bob Sapp guy is huge (are you sure its not Warren Sapp ;)), but his record stinks and he has fought alot of chumps. The guy in the picture from the other thread looks like a meatball. I don't think Tyson would take a fight anymore he didn't think he could win easily.

Yeah, he isn't like the god of K-1 or anything. I just think he's popular because of how strong he is. I remember watching him fight in Pride, which is like a more hardcore UFC, and this guy had him on the mat with a armbar move. Sapp just picked him up and powerbombed him on the mat. Looked amazing. He ended up losing though. Them dudes don't play around and can put you in a painful submission in no time.

He's pretty fun to watch in K-1 as well. I saw some replays of him just getting guys in the corner and just wailing away at them and the other guy can't block the shots and gets smacked in the head.

All that said, Sapp needs work on endurance and better technique. If he gets hit hard, his legs start to wobble and they can't hold his frame that well.

He does have some potential though...I guess.

I was off by a hundred pounds, he's 374! He does fight in K1, I was wrong.

Well Tyson certainly keeps things interesting doesn't he? :D

The sport in general is really interesting-- it would be fun to watch a K1 Tyson fight, that would bring some big time pay per view money.

I was trying to figure out who you could be talking about, if it wasn't Sapp. Those guys don't grow on trees...at least, not any trees in my yard. We just got some apple and pecan trees. Stupid squirrels keep eating our pecans.

Wait a minute, wasn't there some thing about squirrels a while back on the BBS. I only vaguely remember it...wow..way off-topic.

It was the K-1 Semi-finals at the Bellagio Friday August 15th. The finals are in Japan. I guess Tyson will have to fight some qualifiers or something. This is definitely something I'd watch.

That guy looks more like a Sumo wrestler – I think that is just too big to be any kind of effective fighter. He seems like he would be extremely slow and vulnerable to a man who weighed 150 pounds less and hit as hard or harder.

Not exactly like a sumo wrestler - he doesn't really have any body fat. :) He's not the greatest, but if you don't know what you are doing, he's gonna take you out. The fights are fun to watch anyway - you can search for bob sapp on kazaa.

I definitely wouldn't overlook Sapp here. I saw him fight for the first time the other night, in a replay of that K-1 at the Bellagio. And he took down Kimo, a badass in UFC circles.

Still, Kimo had a chance. Which says something for the smaller, quicker fighter. Regardless, I'd love to see it.
