Two weird misconceptions about Bosh and NBA player acquisition

Just some thoughts on various opinions in GARM in the offseason, which I find kind of perplexing. Now I don't want this post to be pro-Bosh. I think there are risk/rewards with either decision. But I do think the reasoning against getting Bosh should be better than one of the following.

Misconception 1: Only franchise players should make Max money. Basically, the idea is that Bosh isn't on the level of some mythical "franchise player" level. Hence he doesn't deserve the max we'll pay him.

Reality: The salary ceiling in the NBA artificially deflates the amount of money the best players can make. For those fans who followed the NBA before the concept of max salary came into play, remember how much Jordan made compared to his peers? How much more money Shaq got in FA compared to everyone else? That no longer applies to today's NBA.

For example, suppose max salary is set at $10 mil. Player A is worth $20 mil, Player B is worth $15 mil, and Player C is worth $10 mil. They would all deserve max contract. Even though you can say Player C is only worth 50% of what Player A makes. This is the concept of a Max salary. As in, you can't go over. As in, it screws the very best players like Lebron because he can't get himself a Jordan contract that more than doubled the 2nd highest player salary(I think even tripled Dream's salary)

Misconception 2: You should never "overpay" for a player.

Reality: In a free market, this would be true. If this were fantasy basketball and every team bids on every player with a hard cap, then indeed, overpaying would be bad. But the NBA is not a free market. It doesn't have a hard cap. And you cannot spend money freely once you're over the cap.

So the concept of "overpaying" a player is somewhat ludicrous, unless that overpayment hits certain thresholds like the luxury tax(like how SA dumped Scola to us or how we gave Memphis money to take SF3 off our hands). Bosh doesn't have to even deliver the championship. Heck, a few more season tickets and an extra round of playoffs would have Les making all that money back. Orlando severely overpaid Rashard Lewis, but you think they're not making that money back because they've been going deep into the playoffs these past years? And Bosh wouldn't even come close to as overpaid as Lewis.

Bosh is worth max money, he's one of the top PFs in the game. He's young, he's durable, and he's not an ass like Zach Randolph.

I've been saying the first one for a while now but no one seems to get it.

The second one is true, but I agree with it only to a lesser degree than the first. Les Alexander has said that he is willing to pay the Lux Tax next year to keep some of the players we have. However, say we do get the Bosh deal done, would he be willing to commit to paying the Lux Tax for the next 5 years to keep the core in tact? Or our we going to have to let go of some of our assets and find new ones? That said, I think Bosh is well worth 16 million.

I trust Morey enough to find a replacement for a guy like Brooks, but I would rather we be able to keep him somehow.

In the end though, Morey has a much better idea of what Les is or is not willing to do and has a plan based on whatever his limitations are. So I guess we should just trust him.

Rashard Lewis is making Max money and Isn't close to a franchise player. No one is complaining when you get to the ECF two years straight.

It's all about a balance. If you have cheap talent you sometimes need max money player to seal the deal (potentially)

While I think that Bosh probably should and will get max money, not being on the All-NBA 1st, 2nd or 3rd team was a bit telling although how they pick those teams are another issue. His going rate is max money so overpaying won't be an issue IMO.

I would never use end of the year awards to analyze anything.

If you did you would believe that Derek Jeter is a good defender. Thats a lul.

Basically agree, which is why I added the comment about the way they pick the teams but saying that, awards and all-star teams are one thing while picking the best of the best is another IMO.

The problem is not in relation to how much money Bosh can make on the free market, but how giving him that contract effects the ability to build a team around him.

You guys are thinking small....look bigger......

We gave Tmac and Yao max deals and it hindered the team's ability to build pieces aroudn them as our owner likes to stay under the Lux tax....next year being the exception that proves the rule.

No one is saying Bosh will not get a Max deal, what a lot of us ARE saying is that it may not be the right deal for the Rockets......

I'm not worried about Morey giving Max Money to Bosh because Morey has proven that he can find Great role players in the Draft. The fact that Morey can replace cheap talent with a proven scorer like Kevin Martin shows that he can manipulate that talent any way he likes. It's pretty stunning if you ask me.

I understand this. I was making more of a blanket statement along the lines of: "If player A deserves to make $10 mil a year, it's not a big deal if you pay him $12 mil a year". Agree that the length of the contract could potentially hinder future moves. But that's the cost of doing business.

If you don't want to risk salary space but still want a star player, the only other alternative is to tank multiple seasons like the Thunder. And I'd rather not suffer through that.

Really? Name me some stars that the Rockets missed out on because we devoted long term money to T-Mac and Yao? Which free agent in the past season would we have signed if we didn't have $30+ mil devoted to those two?

    Rashard Lewis?

I have no issue with your points. However, if the Commish were to have his way, if, there will be a hard cap after the next CBA, or a harder one.

The concern for DM the GM and GMs throughout the land, is what ramifications will this summer's decisions have going forward from the new CBA.

I agree on point A, not so much on point B. Players that are paid more than they are worth are hard to trade. Sometimes, carrying an overpaid player doesn't hurt too much, expecially if they are giving you a little production and the contract isn't too long (like Jeffries last season). But, being unable to adapt to changing conditions because albatross contracts are hard to move is a very costly condition. Morey has done a good job of avoiding it so far and will continue to do so, I hope.

Morey can find players in the draft because Les ponies up the 3 mil to buy the picks.

What happens when Les decides to sell the picks we have instead of buying extra picks because he's out of cash?

    +1.

As far as I can remember, we used up our MLE every year during Yao and TMac's time. Swift, Wells, Francis etc. Hell, we even took on the horrible deal of Mike James to try and make the team better. Meanwhile, the guys we traded away to get under the luxury tax were always bit players who weren't in the rotation anyway.

meh you articulated a lot of my thoughts. Whenever I try to express those very same ideas I cant because I wind up getting mad at everyone (lol). Good job breaking it down without ranting.

Now I've said that this is something to worry about, however I think the Yao/Tracy example is a bit extreme.

Those two combined were making close to 40 million and both were constantly out of the lineup. That's bad. However we don't want 2 max guys, we want one: Bosh. Yao is no longer worth the max and I would hope that after this season if Yao proves he is still NBA capable, then we resign him for a much smaller contract. 8-10 million max. If that happens, then we would have 1 max guy, and a whole bunch of high quality players in the 4-10 range. Then if we let Battier or Jeffries expire (whichever one is here after a trade, I doubt both go) then we have that much more room.

I don't think Bosh will tie us up the way Tmac and Yao did. I think due to the millions of dollars we have coming off the books in expirings and players who, if resigned, are due to make less money than they currently are (Battier, Yao) I think we have a decent amount of flexibility.

Plus, look at the team Morey was able to build around Yao and Tmac's massive contracts. It wasn't until February of this year that he finally got rid of Tracy's, and we already had a deep team.

One more thing. If next year the Rockets become elite contenders due to a Bosh trade and a successful Yao return, you can bet Les will be willing to spend a few lux tax dollars.

Great thread, meh. But don't try to get into DD-Land. This thread refutes probably over 200 of his posts. But I forget, were thinking "small".

That is not meant as a dig Declan, it is meant as a way to get people to think about the overall roster instead of just "Does Bosh make us better"....

Clearly he does that, no doubt, but if that stops the team from being able to build a winning program around him, then is it worth it overall from a franchise stand point?

I would take Bosh in heartbeat, love his game, think he fits in perfectly...but when you start talking about paying him $20 million a year, when the CBA is expiring and the cap is likely to go down, how would you feel if he is 40% of our overall cap?

That is what I am talking about....you guys are having a talent discussion, and I am having an asset discussion......

If all we are talking about is talent, and Les is like Mark Cuban...and willing to spend whatever it takes...EVERY YEAR....then sign me up.......all aboard ...choo chooo !!!
