I know there have been threads about this in the past, but the technology changes so much, I'd love to hear people's opinions. I'm buying a new house and need a lot of furniture. Furniture is boring. TVs are less so. I need at least 2 new TVs. One will be in a family room, and I think a 50" would be the ideal size. I can't do a plasma, because the room has a ton of light, and I hate the glare. The other TV will be in the basement / rec room. The best will likely be a ~46". Light is less of an issue in here since the TV will be away from windows. Suggestions on brands, models, type, etc? I'd love to keep the price under $1k. I was really hoping to see a HOT DEAL notification over the last couple weeks, but no such luck. And for whatever it's worth, internet or national chain buying is preferred since I don't live in Texas. Thanks to all in advance.
I frequently see pretty good deals for TVs on woot.com. Haven't had a need to buy one in a while so I couldn't speak to the brands they offer or the technology you should use, though.
Do you want a Smart and/or 3D? If you don't want either of those things, I would recommend the Samsung Series 6 line of TVs. I just got a 55" Sunsung Full-Array LED for $600 (well, it was $1,000 but came with a $400 gift card) from Dell.com. I think this deal is still going on. I would personally advocate going this route, as you can get a Roku for $50-$100 that would make your TV "Smart". And I don't really care about 3D. I'm using the gift card for a wall mount and to pay to have someone come out to mount the TV. If you do want 3D or Smart, I would still recommend Samsung or LG*. When you find a TV you like, check out the A/V forums as they have official threads for each and every TV out there. See what the general review of the TV is and what the best picture settings are. Some other things: - There is no such thing as 240Hz. It is a marketing thing. - The best LED has "full array" and "local dimming". The TV I recommended above does not have local dimming. - Get one with a matte finish to reduce glare. - Even if you want a Smart TV, try to avoid gimmicks. For example, many new LG's come with a "Magic Remote" that is universally received as a POS. It is so bad that many people buy a generic universal remote to replace it. - If you want a 3D TV, there is "active" and "passive" 3D. I personally don't have a preference, but some I know prefer "active". Be aware, "active" 3D glasses cost quite a bit more. *If you don't want to go Samsung or LG and prefer to go with a cheaper brand (say, Insignia) try to see if you can find who makes the panel for that particular TV. Sometimes you can get an Insignia made with LG or Samsung parts but costs quite a bit less. But most of the time, they are made with inferior parts and that will become noticeable before too long. Also - keep an eye on techbargains.com and slickdeals.com
Thanks for this. I am not interested in internet connected or 3D. I'll take care of internet with other devices. I'll google full array and local dimming, because I'm not sure what that really means.
If you get any other brand, you are simply a fool. In fact you better post a picture of your brand new 720P Dynex to avoid being banned.
Keep an eye on Fry's sale ads. I got a 60" Sharp LED about a year ago for $899 (reg. price at the time was about $1600). It wasn't advertised online but in-store only in the paper ad. Someone on the Slickdeals forums found it and posted it, which is how I found it. Then I had to call around the different stores every day or two for a few days until one of them had one in stock. If you hunt enough you can find a great deal on TVs.
I should have put "IMO" instead of stating that as a fact. But, I don't think you'll find anyone who prefers a TV without local dimming when all else is equal. You'll just have to decide if paying more for this feature is worth it to you. As for full array vs edge-lit, it's more a personal preference. Edge-lit TVs are thinner, and the vast majority of new (2012, 2013) TVs are edge-lit. I prefer full-array, but truth be told the difference for the everyday man such as myself isn't noticeable. That was the exact thing I read when I googled it. Thanks again. I saw the TV you referred to on the Dell site. Now it's $999 and I can't find a rebate card for it. Slightly cheaper at Best Buy. Oh well
Here it is: http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/...&cid=259584&lid=4660910&acd=12309173244274931 Down side is the $400 gift card doesn't get sent to your email until 10-20 days after your order had been processed. So I have the TV but it's just sitting in the box Also, only 2 HDMI connections can be an issue. I'll probably get an HDMI switcher from Amazon for $10.
slickdeals is a great site to find deals on TVs. My bro has a sharp aqous and its 80" and wonderful! They have a good deal on 50" Aquos right now LED LCD TV with $300 Dell GC. http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/...5267--XLNaLEJEeKBCfY2E6PhoAMGt1_M3eX3_g-M_0_0
Got a 60 led sharp and got motion sick from playing black ops. How do I fix it? It's the tv for sure cause I never get like that
Does anyone recommend any 32 inch tvs? I'm looking to put one in my bedroom and use it as a computer monitor.
