We should warn the actors that more than likely one of them will be stranded. We haven't had a movie yet that didn't leave one on the planet.
It is a Mix of Sci Fi and the Science behind it. The Sci Fi is like 20% of the show so far Rocket River
Are they dealing with the fact that Martian soil and dust has a deadly level of perchlorate in it, that astronauts could not bring that crap back in to a dwelling on their boots or else everyone would die, basically? Everyone ignores the perchlorate on Mars. [sorry -- insert grumpy cat]
They have not that I can tell . .. but Now I want to google it I guess they did not address this in THE MARTIAN either? The Show is very interesting. Basically it is a fictional account of the first moon landing and attempting to create a habitat. Then they switch to the actual NASA Scientist etc and explain the problems they will face and why Rocket River
Haven't watched but I assume they didn't eat the soil or use it in their coffee filter or make tea with it and thus are fine.
http://www.space.com/21554-mars-toxic-perchlorate-chemicals.html " There is growing interest in appraising perchlorate as a long-term exposure risk to humans on Mars before the first human sets foot on the Red Planet. NASA has identified key strategic knowledge gaps that need to be addressed before humans can be sent to Mars. Two key areas are the potential hazards to humans, and the existence of resources that can support human and robotic operations. "I'd put it in the category of, this is exactly why we do robotic exploration before sending humans," Doug Archer, a scientist with the Astromaterials Research and Exploration Science Directorate of NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston, said of the perchlorate research. Archer said perchlorate's existence on Mars would have posed an even larger problem had it not been discovered. "But now that we know it's there, I am confident we will be able to design around it," he said. "I have a lot of co-workers here at Johnson Space Center who work in the human exploration side of things, and none of them seem to think perchlorate is a showstopper. So sending robotic explorers as precursors to human exploration is shown to be a very useful strategy." I figure they may address it Rocket River
Perchlorate is an excuse like radiation the people who never want to leave LEO use to curtail human achievement.
Thanks for that article, RR. And no, they didn't cover that in The Martian (book or movie either one), but maybe the issue wasn't understood so well when that book was written.
No worries. Glad you brought it up because this is so fascinating to me. I had not followed the science about Mars in a while. . . . and this show sparked it. So any and all info is welcome Rocket River
He seems to mention that water is more plentiful than previously thought (37:00 Mark some where abouts) (Curiousity probe - for every cubic meter of martian soil has 35 liters of water in it) The Mars show seems to not take that into account. Rocket River
