Just because it may have bad acting at times doesn't mean the show sucks, but you're entitled to your opinion. I just hope you're not basing it just on bad acting.
Yea, the bad acting gets to me sometimes but good writing makes up for it. I'm really liking this show.
maybe i'm caught up in the story so much i'm missing the bad acting...i've thought the main character have been pretty solid
Maybe my expectations were too high. I just think it could be better, there are some cheesy characters and that translates into some cheesy scenes. You gotta admit the young boxer and the bother are pretty corny. I hope it gets better, I want to like the show.
I'd read a review beforehand and it made a point of saying that the first 4 or 5 episodes are slow but after that it picks up quite a bit. The brother is kind of cheesy though.
I've watched it and have liked it so far...a little slow is accurate, but will definitely keep watching...
I really like this show. Then again i'm a boxing freak so I may be a little biased. But its very cool to see a show about boxing. The 3rd episode I believe where their young gun was being thrown in too fast with a champ, happens a lot. That kid also represented the new generation of boxers because a lot of them are like him. Hopefully this show will get picked up for another season, I heard it stated off with low ratings despite all the promotion.
The dime switch transformation of the champ from laid back family man to barely controlled violence in the pilot sold me on this show. I'll give it the benefit of the doubt during any rough patches. Rough patch 1a: Spoiler the badass up-and-comer revealing he could've gotten up/isn't truly a boxer seemed completely out of character I'm kinda intrigued by the brother character. It's been said/implied a few times that he was the better boxer/prospect when they were younger. The "wha' happened" story arc to come might be interesting. Also, though he hasn't been given much to work with on this show, Pablo Schreiber, the actor, was absolutely great on the second season of The Wire. So he can pull off more than just squandering money, being pissy about it, wash repeat. And anyone who nails secretary Anna Chlumsky (all growns up from her "My Girl" days) on a business rival's office copier can't be all bad.
I think so far he's just been played up as a sleezy biz manager, I hope they'll explore some of the more interesting dynamics you mentioned.
I don't think it was out of character at all. Its not uncommon for a so called tough guy-bad ass to fold under pressure. A lot of those guys put up that front to hide their insecurities. Those are the guys most likely to get humbled at one point in their life. From a boxing perspective, that really happens. One fight, one loss can change everything. Especially for the young and arrogant guys that feel theyre untouchable. Boxing is where heart matters most, even over skill. It's not like basketball where you can get by on just skill or athleticism and little heart. In boxing, if you don't have the heart to battle 12 rounds or get up after a knock down, then you really shouldn't be boxing. Most those guys don't know they aren't "true boxers" until they suffer that lost or knockout. Take boxer Prince Naseem Hamed from the UK for example. It's funny because Hamed is very similar to Omar in Lights Out. Like Omar, he was young, arrogant, a huge showboat in the ring and packed ridiculous power. He was undefeated, did most of his damage in Europe before coming to America where he won a couple fights. Then came time for his biggest test against Mexican warrior, Marco Antonio Barrera. This would mark Naseem's toughest fight and his first on the biggest boxing stage in Vegas. He was champ, 35-0 with 31 KO. If he wins, it would definitely solidify him as legit because he was often critisized for taking easy fights. Well, he didn't win. In fact, he got his ass kicked all over the ring and was throughly embarrassed. There was no showboating this time. After that loss, he never recovered. Didn't take a rematch like most true champs would and didn't fight until a year later in a unimpressive win. Shortly after, he ended up in jail for wreckless driving. Now, this wasn't exactly like Omars situation, but similar.
Lights needs to stop ducking Death Row and take the fight! Morales was a bum that just got out of jail........
I quit watching after the episode where lights chooses to fight in that match vs bas rutten to wipe out his bro's debt when instead he coulda just fought death row again 10 million. Especially idiotic considering the bas match was much more dangerous, much less lucrative and would take place after zero training.
