One of the best Houston had to offer back in the day, imo. http://www.click2houston.com/news/15925957/detail.html Ron Stone Passes Away At 72 UPDATED: 12:53 pm CDT May 13, 2008 HOUSTON -- Ron Stone, who anchored the news on KPRC TV for 20 years and was a Houston broadcasting legend, passed away from prostrate cancer on Tuesday, KPRC Local 2 reported. Stone, who turned 72 on April 6, spent more than 30 years on the air in Houston. He was a daily fixture for KPRC viewers from 1972 until he retired in 1992 and formed a production company. Prior to that, Stone worked at KHOU TV for 10 years. Stone was known for being a renowned storyteller. "The first job I ever applied for, the news director asked me if I knew how to use (a television camera). I must confess I didn't know what one of these was. But I learned," he said. And he learned it well. The television camera became his canvas and his brush. He would use it to paint pictures and then bring them to life through the artistry of his words. Stone's masterly arrangement of pictures and words captured the very essence of television journalism. His manner was folksy and plain spoken, but beneath that was a razor-sharp intellect that combined a lyrical command of language with hard-nosed professionalism.
The Eyes of Texas was an incredible show. Still to this day, everytime I watch Texas Country Reporter, I think that even though its a good show, its just a ripoff of "The Eyes of Texas".
Yeah, I used to watch The Eyes of Texas with my Dad every Saturday when I was a kid. I always wanted to go where ever they were that week. RIP Ron Stone
I grew up with the guy. From Jr. High on, I'd watch the Channel 2 10 O'clock news and then Carson's monologue before I had to go to bed.
I really liked this guy. He was sort of a fixture in my home growing up...he was the local news. He always seemed to me like a really genuine person. Sorry to see him go. RIP.
Yeah. There have been more freeways built, but the map highlights some of the most beautiful roadways in Texas (in the opinion of The Eyes of Texas). Great map!
I had no idea you could get cancer from lying face down. I may be doomed. I loved Ron Stone growing up. I live 10 minutes from Beaumont and we used to get the Houston local stations instead of the Beaumont ones. Never understood why, but we chose to watch KPRC for the news mainly because we liked Ron Stone.
Sad day. I kinda pictured him and Wilford Brimley as the type of guys you would want as a grandfather. (Both of mine passed away before I was old enough to remember them)
