Eh, outrage is overblown. It reminded me of the gangsta rap controversies of the '90s, like NWA and that Cop Killer song by Body Count. Glorifies a bunch of crap like drug-dealing, murder, misogyny, etc, that I don't ascribe much value to, and maybe I think less of people for loving those songs, but I also don't see a need to suppress. I think this song is kinda dumb, fake-tough and self-delusional, and obviously conservative and populist, but whatever, that's his free expression. I also don't think much of rappers who want to glorify shooting cops. There are tons of other songs besides that glorify bad behavior and unvirtuous virtues. Don't see why I should pick on this one.
Small town living…. die young from drugs and lack of opportunity while being incredibly entitled. Small town crime has exploded since so many of its people are hooked on that junk.
I think it’s just a larger symptom of this populist brand of conservatism….. Christian nationalism… open hostility towards anyone else…. Trying to change school curriculum. Religious Jim Crow is so hot right now.
Sure. But, it's just a pride song. It mythologizes small town America as an environment where people love their neighbors and look out for each other, and where they don't brook any nonsense, adding some ****-around-and-find-out braggadocio. Alright. Compare that to the lyrics of Cop Killer: [Verse 1] COP KILLER! Yeah! I got my black shirt on I got my black gloves on I got my ski mask on This ****'s been too long I got my twelve gauge sawed off I got my headlights turned off I'm 'bout to bust some shots off I'm 'bout to dust some cops off I'm a... [Chorus] COP KILLER, better you than me COP KILLER, **** police brutality! COP KILLER, I know your family's grievin' ... **** 'EM! COP KILLER, but tonight we get even [Verse 2] I got my brain on hype Tonight'll be your night I got this long-assed knife And your neck looks just right My adrenaline's pumpin' I got my stereo bumpin' I'm 'bout to kill me somethin' A pig stopped me for nuthin'! [Chorus] COP KILLER, better you than me COP KILLER, **** police brutality! COP KILLER, I know your mama's grievin' ... **** 'EM! COP KILLER, but tonight we get even [Bridge] DIE, DIE, DIE, PIG, DIE! **** THE POLICE! **** THE POLICE! **** THE POLICE! **** THE POLICE! **** THE POLICE! **** THE POLICE! **** THE POLICE! **** THE POLICE! Yeah! [Chorus] COP KILLER, better you than me COP KILLER, **** police brutality! COP KILLER, I know your family's grievin' ... **** 'EM! COP KILLER, but tonight we get even [Outro] **** THE POLICE! **** THE POLICE, for Daryl Gates **** THE POLICE, for Rodney King **** THE POLICE, for my dead homies **** THE POLICE, for your freedom **** THE POLICE, don't be a p***y **** THE POLICE, have some motha****in' courage **** THE POLICE, sing along! COP KILLER! I'm a mutha****in' COP KILLER! Now, I don't want to do some whataboutism here. Just saying, I've seen worse.
All I am wondering is which A&R approved either of these songs for mass consumption. Also ironic that Ice-T went on to play a cop himself.
For me it’s less about the song and the growing calls to take back culture by any means. Cop Killer was about frustration over police brutality against blacks. Not just glorifying violence. This country song is just nostalgia about simpler time where people knew the place, which is big in conservatism.
I got plenty of small town experience in Texas and Louisiana… and confident these folks are upset they feel like the “n*gger” now. Religion and traditions play such a larger role in putting everyone in their “right place”.
Working class whites always had a **** deal. Jason Aldean is neither from a small town nor a working class white.
No he’s just playing up to that base that feels like things were taken from them and that the outsiders are to blame…. It’s never the working class fault. I hear you…. It’s tough when things are great for a class of people and you can tell women and minorities what to do and it sucks when you lose it. It’s not just whites… plenty of Hispanic males pretty feel entitled too. Not just white males.
White Men > Black Men > White Women > Black Women The chattel system also treated women and children as property until the early 1800s. I guess children still are property in many legal senses.
99ers Representing 90s hip hop. this entire generation of rap fans and music is so soft and unoriginal I mean we listen to hard core gangster rap back then Like real stuff that is hard and educational @Jontro
