Considering how dismissively he treated California officials in last month's meeting, and how he tweeted last week that CALIFORNIA IS GOING TO HELL, VOTE TRUMP...

Political vindictiveness. Just because he can't get their electoral votes.

If it were "Mississippi Burning", he'd pay up.

Hopefully the next Democratic President cuts off all that pork that goes into South Carolina, Kentucky, Kansas, Mississippi, etc. Power is all that Republicans understand, like the old Communists.

trump seems to believe that the rest of the country will applaud this. That they will appreciate his kneejerk incompetence, his mindless cruelty, his incredible self-destructive obsession with attacking those who have the temerity to disagree with him about anything.

The psychopath actually thinks that this will get him votes, when all it does is further confirm his madness and his utter lack of empathy for the people of our republic. On top of that, California is a state that's home to four and a half million voters who must now be wondering, "What in the hell was I thinking when I voted for this guy?"

Truly reprehensible... trump's decisions to send aid to states based on whether they are "blue" or red"? November can't get here soon enough...

He approved the disaster declarations for LA for both Hurricanes Laura and Delta.

Another problem with the electoral college. When you have a president with zero moral integrity, he might as well see states that aren't going to give him electoral points as foerign enemies.

Also many of Trumps' supporters feel the same way. I've seen several posts in the last couple of months saying that CA, NY and other blue states shouldn't get a cent of Federal money for disasters.

The Electoral College though also makes sure that small states get attention from the Federal government. Under a popular vote small states could be ignored because of how few voters they have.

Whether you support or hate the Electoral College no state facing a disaster should be ignored by the administration.

Also to add no US territory either given how poorly PR has been treated.

Not really. It makes sure swing states get attention. Whether those are high pop or low pop is totally coincidental. And even then, the "attention" they get is mostly not helpful in nature (rallies, ad buys, etc).

Swing states can change. At one time CA was a purple state. Yes that is campaign attention but in terms of things like government aid and etc.. the Federal system including Electoral College and Senators means that no state can be ignored.

I would put this more as a failure of partisanship than the electoral college as under a popular vote system a highly partisan president might not want to ignore CA but could ignore small states that vote against him such as DE or WY respectively.

We have the Senate for small state representations.

I would say electoral college is a mechanism that enables the partisanship to happen more. I'm down for splitting electoral votes per state.

The United States needs the Cali economy more than Cali needs federal aid. If Gov Newsome wanted to, he could merely tease leaving the union along with Oregon and Washington and watch as Trumps beloved stock market goes into a tail spin.

It’s utterly stupid for Trump to try and do this because of personal vendettas against all that do not kiss his ass.

Isn't it telling that this is the first time in history when disaster aid was used as a political hammer? Yet another result of people electing trump...

I'm fine with that. I think doing what ME and NB do and split votes by Congressional Districts would actually be a more accurate view of the election and balance the popular vote with the states. Also it wouldn't require any changes to the Constitution as the States can decide on their own to do that.

The sacred cow of the Senate should be abolished. It i snot just the electoral college. The 38-40 40 senators of the small states whose population is equal to California. also appoint the S. Ct. We are now suffering from the tyranny of the minority. Time to act like one country. We would all be speaking German if we allowed every state to veto on whether we go to war as they can now determine if we wear masks or have mass spreader events.

I always see it like this. A Wyoming resident has 70x the voting power of a Cali resident in chosing our federal judges as the Senate has the final say in those matters. That's pretty darn absurd.
