I watched Halloween (original) last night and while I still think it's a great movie, I don't think I was ever actually scared per se. Which begs the question... What is the scariest movie you've ever seen? I mean a movie that truly gave you nightmares afterwards. Made you scared to turn out the lights at night. I'm looking for the ultimate scary movie, but I just can't seem to find it. Please help.
i still am freaked out by the original Nightmare on Elm Street...really. it was all serious and no cheesy parts like it is now. quite frankly, i find Halloween (the movie) boring.
That new version (I think it was called "The Version Youve Never Seen") of the original Exorcist that was re-released into theaters back in 2000 freaked me out a bit. But nothing that has come out in the last 15 years that I could think of. Everything relies more on shock now than scary.
There has never been a horror movie that made me actually scared. I loved horror movies since I was a kid. Use to watch the Freddy/Jason movies all the time. But I never really got scared or had nightmares over those movies or any horror flick. They're not real so it's hard for me to get scared of something that is fictional. But of course there a parts in those movies where you get startled like when the killer just shows up out of nowhere to make a kill. Although, I do have a friend that is a BIG pansy. He never watches scary movies because he gets freaked out and it gives him nightmares. I'm not even exaggerating. It isn't a kid either, he's about 22-23 years old.
I was talking about this at work- how do you get scared by a bunch of fake stuff on a screen? Only movies that scare me are movies that I think could be real- like serial killer movies or alien abductions (when I was a kid)
The only scary movie that ever made me uncomfortable was Event Horizon. However I saw that movie when I was like 13 so I can't really say how it would affect me now.
Just the thought of The Exorcist scared the hell out of me as a kid. I didn't see the movie until I was an adult. Lesson- Don't mess with ouija boards. The Omen was extremely scary as a kid. I watched it on cable at my best friend's house with his five brothers and sisters. We all slept together in the living room that night b/c everyone was so freaked.
I find movies with ghosts instead of monsters scary. I think 'truly scary movies' only exist when you're young because as you get older you start realizing there's no such thing. However I still get scared for a night or two after watching a good Asian horror movie. Damn those Asians are good at making horror flicks! The last American made horror flick that scared me was The Sixth Sense. I was in middle school when that came out I think. That was scary. For me that ghost stuff was more believable than those silly monsters and that Halloween guy with the ski mask and chainsaw movies. I remember getting home after watching the Sixth Sense.. I was MESSED UP. I couldn't pee alone and definitely can't go to the kitchen alone. I got a little scared whenever I'm alone in a room or anywhere. Speaking of which, anyone know any good Asian horror movies? I'm addicted to those.
Good question. I feel the same way. I think I have a harder time suspending my disbelief w/ horror movies. It especially seems like movies today have a harder time scaring people, so they up the ante w/ gore instead.
I personally found the Ring to be pretty disturbing the first time I saw it. I find that sort of thing a lot scarier than gore, which doesn't appeal to me at all, and cheesy camera/score scare tactics.
Me either. Too many movies mistake 'startling' people with 'scaring' people. Waiting for someone to yell "boo!!" does not equal being scared. Jacob's Ladder had some nice disturbing imagery. But these so-called modern day horror flicks (The Grudge, The Ring, etc.) just don't do it for me.
The original Nightmare on Elm Street. I saw it as a kid. I refused to watch any more of Freddy Krueger's movies until a few years ago.
The Exorcist was scary The Shining was scary Nothing modern is scary. I swear, I need to make my own horror movie 'cause Hollywood just can't figure it out.
I'm telling you guys. Watch some of the old Japanese horrors. They're really good at making psychological scary movies.
