There is not just a double standard for black and white politicians at play in too much of the news media and political establishment, but there is also a glaring double standard for our political parties. The Clintons and Mr. Obama are always held accountable for their racial stands, as they should be, but the elephant in the room of our politics is rarely acknowledged: In the 21st century, the so-called party of Lincoln does not have a single African-American among its collective 247 senators and representatives in Washington. Yes, there are appointees like Clarence Thomas and Condi Rice, but, as we learned during the Mark Foley scandal, even gay men may hold more G.O.P. positions of power than blacks.

A near half-century after the civil rights acts of the 1960s, this is quite an achievement. Yet the holier-than-thou politicians and pundits on the right passing shrill moral judgment over every Democratic racial skirmish are almost never asked to confront or even acknowledge the racial dysfunction in their own house. In our mainstream political culture, this de facto apartheid is simply accepted as an intractable given, unworthy of notice, and just too embarrassing to mention aloud in polite Beltway company. Those who dare are instantly accused of “political correctness” or “reverse racism.”

An all-white Congressional delegation doesn’t happen by accident. It’s the legacy of race cards that have been dealt since the birth of the Southern strategy in the Nixon era. No one knows this better than Mr. McCain, whose own adopted daughter of color was the subject of a vicious smear in his party’s South Carolina primary of 2000.

This year Mr. McCain has called for a respectful (i.e., non-race-baiting) campaign and has gone so far as to criticize (ineffectually) North Carolina’s Republican Party for running a Wright-demonizing ad in that state’s current primary. Mr. McCain has been posing (awkwardly) with black people in his tour of “forgotten” America. Speaking of Katrina in New Orleans, he promised that “never again” would a federal recovery effort be botched on so grand a scale.

Well, if Illinois had voted for Alan Keyes instead of Snobama, then we'd have ONE! and wasn't JC Watts a part of the Grand Ol' Party?

    OOPS

Quotas are anti-American. Everything should be based on merit. You don't just go around handing out jobs in CONGRESS to balance out the demographics. That's absurd.

I found the "where are obama's white relatives" thread to be dumber... but in a REPRESENTATIVE democracy, your leaders should reflect, to a certain extent, the constituency.

That being said, I do find it interesting that there aren't more black GOP representatives IN WASHINGTON as I know a handful of well-educated black republicans.

I think a better question would be "How many GOP latinos are senators and representatives in Washington?" as there are many many more Republican voters in that base.

I'm not crazy about how the column was written, but the author has a valid point. I would think the fact that the GOP hasn't been able to elect a Black man or woman to serve in the current Congress is an embarrassment to members of the Republican Party. And the idea that Democrats should have "rolled over" so a Black Republican could get elected made me laugh. I've voted for Republicans before. Not often, but I have, when I thought that person was the better candidate. Looks like the GOP should do a better job attracting candidates of color. Someone who can get elected.

    Trim Bush.

I think it's unfortunate, but what are they supposed to do? There aren't more than a handful of black politicians elected to begin with. Then add in the factor that most black voters align with the democratic party and well, you see where that leads to no black republicans in congress. It isn't intentional. The GOP would love to get black senators so they can rid themselves of this foolish "Republicans hate black people" label. They've tried on multiple occasions. The Dems pony up extra cash to keep them out, and for good reason. Black GOP members = not good for Democratic race card.

Anyway, it's disappointing but there isn't a whole lot that can be done about it.

Only partially related, but today's GOP is no more the Party of Lincoln than today's Democratic Party the Party of Jefferson and Jackson.

I think it has more to do with the GOP taking positions contrary to the interests of many black voters. It has little to do with Democrats paying money to keep anyone out.

I think it has the most to do with the successful sales pitch by certain black liberal leaders that the Great Society and its welfare programs are the interest of African Americans.

I think both play into it. The GOP does not champion the perceived interests of the black voters (that are espoused as being in their interest by liberal leaders), but the Democratic party has a vested interest in keeping the GOP lily white.

disagree at least recently, the overwhelming majority of black voters aren't living on welfare, most are middle class, and most probably don't even benefit from affirmative action.

I think it has to do with spending on education, housing, healthcare, etc. as opposed to military spending, corporate bail outs etc.
