On setp 19th I was planning on driveing to Orlando for vacation from Houston....any thoughts on what I should do now??did I hear that I-10 was destroyed? and if it is does anybody recommend what would be a good way to drive over there?.....thanks
i've made that drive a few times. you'll need to jog north at some point. I-10 east of NOLA is impassable, as i understand it. probably adds a few hours on your trip. sorry.
Yeah that is what I figured but how far north? I'll have to look at a map to figure out which way to go....unless somebody might know here...
Ask AAA shortly before your trip, I think they are pretty good in getting up-to-date info on things like road conditions, detours, etc.
It is a 14-16 hour drive straight through on I-10. A lengthy detour could easily push it up over 20 requiring a stopover somewhere. Between gas prices, hotel availability, and the 4 days of driving roundtrip, you may want to consider flying.
http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/ssistory.mpl/metropolitan/3331166 I-10 to I-12 should be ok. But the MS I-10 closure is going to hurt. You may have to head up I-55 to I-20 then head down MS 45/57 to catch back up with I-10 in Mobile - just in time to get to the 1 lane tunnel. Check the maps and you can probably skip that part too.
Airfare to Orlando from Houston is cheap. Prob around $200 for nonstop. Driving, 2000 miles, easily $250+ for gas.
Why don't you leave a little early and stop by The Swamp on Sept. 17 for the biggest SEC game of the year? FL vs. Tennessee...maybe I could snag you a cheap ticket.
Well its me and my wife with her sister and my 1 year old daughter......thanks for the comments guys...
I talked to a guy last night that sent some utility trucks down to help out. He said that below I-20 from FL to MS there are x hour gas lines if you can find it. Also hotels are all full. His guys have found themselves stuck on more than 1 occation. If there were anyway to get your money back or go somewhere else, I would. Otherwise, I'd fly. Then again, maybe it will get better by the 19th.
