That's the way i'm interpreting this, and the only logical explanation for this going down immediately after the Cavs won the lottery.

Les figured he couldn't wait around and let the Cavs lure Van Gundy after winning the Lebron lottery, and stepped up to the plate and showed that he wanted him.

Jeff Van Gundy will be the next Rocket's coach.

    Excellent work, Les.

yeah, kinda looks that way. The only question will be will Lebron be enough to lure JVG away from the Rockets.

While I don't think the timing is just coincidental, I think it mostly is. The discussion of the buy-out was apparently started before this week. We're talking about it today only because Fox reported it today. The decision was made a week or more ago.

Besides that, it sounds like Les has already talked to Van Gundy and maybe Larry Brown informally about the job. He doesn't need to fire his current coach to talk to JVG about coming aboard. And, if anything, I think the timing is no indication because JVG has had no opportunity to evaluate Cleveland knowing they have Lebron James. If JVG was in the bag, then he had already decided before the lottery drawing that he didn't want to coach Cleveland regardless of whether they got James or not. That might be, but some writers seem confident that he has all but signed on with the Cavs.
