Mango... He is the one Houston poster who I want to meet the most, and haven't yet. I've invited him to things before, always turned down. So, thought maybe he just didn't trust me enough to meet me in person. Then I here that Amin (R0ckets03) invited him to the last game to sit with Jeff, and no answer. Now, I'm thinking he is just shy. How do you get the most shy person on the BBS to come to a get together? My idea is to tell a story why I want to meet Mango. Mango is the very first person on the BBS who emailed me. My first year here after buying season tickets, I'm excited to find a good site and posting bball talk, all business...no hangout, no feedback...those things didn't exist. In the process, I saw how cool CBrownFanClub was for posting "Great time to be a Rockets Fan" when we started the season 2-10 after Clutch posted the infamous "Trade Dream or Barkley Now" thread. Damn, how do I remember these things. (Just be glad Manny doesn't have my memory. ) Well, there's more to this story. So, months go buy, me just doing my scouting, playcalling, mumbo jumbo and rimbaud makes a post about "How did you get your Nick" calling me out. So, I say..."heypartner" is a bridge thing. Lo and behold I get a flattering email from Mango about how it's nice to meet Rockets fans who have other interests, blah blah blah...cool that you like playing bridge...blah blah blah...and get this (Dr of Dunk, this is amazing)...he tells me my real name. Wow. He sends me a post I made in like 1995 on a mailing list that has nothing to do with this bbs. Wow. No one has ever emailed me before on message boards to be personal, much less, impressed me with their technology know-how. Wow, this cc.net thing is cool. I'm thinking: I've got to meet this guy and shake his hand. Mango inspired me to buy the block of seats for Barkley's last game. Yet, no mango email to claim a ticket. *sigh* Last year I prodded him to join us again, and he says, "It is probably best I don't show up." or something like that. I'm thinking, maybe he's had a run-in with others or something, and thinks meeting them in person is too much. But, now after he turns down sitting with Jeff and Amin for the last game, I'm thinking maybe he actually is the most shy person on the bbs. So, help me here. We want Mango to join us Sunday. How do you get the shyest person on the bbs to come out to a game? Mango, we very well might have a BBQ at my house since Crisco and his wife are staying with me. many are down for it, or another place to meet Sunday. Regardless, we are going to have fun and meet new people. I want to meet Mango!!
I would also love to meet Mango. Unfortunately, living in Tennessee, I will be lucky if I ever meet anybody off the BBS in person. But I do have plans that one day I will drive all the way to Houston to watch a game and meet some people. However, if there was one person off the BBS that I would want to meet more than anyone else, it would have to be Mango. I remember back in September or October of this past year, I was really struggling to find my way on the BBS. I would try posting, what I thought, were solid takes only to be ignored (or so I thought). Then I tried acting like an ******* and then doing off the wall stuff like "Most Disliked Poster Since August 1, 2001". Well one morning, I get up and check my email and lo and behold I got an email from Mango. It might have been the first email that I had ever received from a fellow BBS member. I'll never forget what the email said which was "Looks like you have replaced me as the most hated BBS poster now." This started a pretty good correspondence between the 2 of us as we would swap emails back and forth about things. A lot of the things I learned about the BBS whether it was about other posters, history, and the board in general came from him. I really and truly felt that he helped me progress to a more respectable point as a poster. Also, he was one of the first to talk to me about finding a "niche" as a poster. I consider him an invaluable source of information. However, I do know that he seems to be a very private person. Hell, he may even get upset that I mentioned on the board the help he has given me. If you are upset, Mango, then I apologize, but I do feel that you should get some credit for helping me turn my act around here. Crispee - I still can't even get Mango to give me his real last name! So, having him come to a game in person to meet other people off the BBS is something that I don't think will happen. But who knows..maybe he will come. BTW - Crispee, my memory is outstanding. I knew all the Presidents of the United States when I was in 2nd grade and could recite them in order, frontwards and backwards . I also know all the World Series winners beginning in 1903. Just be thankful that I didn't find this site until late July 2001.
Wow Mango, if this thread doesn't touch you and encourage you to come out and meet Crispee and MR, I don't know what to say. By the way, I've always appreciated the policing. I salute you!
My guess is that goading him into going by announcing to everyone on the BBS that you want to meet him is probably not at the top of the list.
Well he told me that me "might" come with us if DOD is able to make it. DOD emailed me and told me he is coming. So now its up to Mango to actually come. Everyone know I used to hate his butt with a passion. That "serious police" stuff made me hyperventilate. I even started my "fun police" just to spite him. Of course now he is one of my favourites. That is why I invited him. Seems like a nice cool guy. I dont know how he knows about everything (would make a nice Jeopardy contestant ). Anyways, Mango your butt needs to come!
This sucks! I've met Jeff and crispee and RocketmanTex(and jamcracker, where ever he is!), and would love to meet Mango and DoD. But unfortunately, I'm working a long stretch of shifts, and won't have a day off till the 22nd. Bummer! Why am I never consulted before these dates are set??

I didn't say that you suck. I suggested that perhaps trying to get a shy person to respond by announcing it on a heavily populated bulletin board might be contradictory to your efforts. Why not just email him? If he is "shy", wouldn't that be more appropriate?

I know it's not necessarily that hard to find these things out, but...I find that scary rather than great.

Don't get defensive on me, crispee. I was just giving you the needle. You, and everybody else for that matter, should always assume that I have a gleam in my eye when I post. I good-naturedly tease everybody in my life, especially my kids and the players I coach. Frankly, I thought that after years on this board people knew that was my personality. Nothing mean-spirited or serious intended. Now, back to sleep.
Mango's not shy... he's just too good for everyone else! Sometimes I view Mango as a demi-god-like puppeteer, gazing with detachement at the rest of us poor fools from above.
Oh yeah. That's your BBS personality...no doubt. I guess I meant, what is your take. I don't know. It's just that I want to read more grummett. Can you tell us someday who you coach, what you coach, and what you love about it? man, we'd all be on the floor, legs crossed, head in hands staring at every word...at least I would be. btw: your win/lose prediction for the year was WAY off (35 wins, bah)...way too much of an optimist, you are.
