I am currently a T-Mobile subscriber in search of a new phone. I quite like T-Mobile's network, particularly in the area that I live--but I have for a while been unsatisfied with their overall phone selection. I used to work for Sprint and, during that time, I owned (and loved) my TREO. Unfortunately, Sprint's network really sucked where I was moving when I got married, and so I switched networks. I was talking to a buddy about my dilemma, and he told me that you can go on EBAY and people sell new TREOS that have been specially programmed so that they will operate on a T-Mobile SIM card. I had never heard this, and I was wondering if any of you could shed some light. Does it in any way restrict the phone's capabilities? How well does it work? Visions of purchasing the new TREO 700 have got me all excited because I'd just as soon not leave the T-Mobile network. Anybody know?
I have the new Treo for Sprint and it is awesome, they now have the 700W which uses Windows. As far as having a Treo reprogrammed for Tmobile, I'd be very very careful before shelling out $600 for one.
You can wait and get the Blackberry Pearl when it comes out on T-Mobile...I'm a big blackberry fan, personally.
He may be right- isn't it as simple as getting a GSM version of the Treo (usually with Cingular) and just plugging in a different SIM card? Otherwise, 'unlocked' versions are easy to find, or you can buy it new and get someone to 'unlock' it for you. Never done it myself.
You have to make sure the Treo is UNLOCKED before you can use it. You can't just use a Cingular Treo out of the box, you have to get it unlocked. You can buy an unlocked GSM Treo from Palm's own website or get one off of ebay. If it's an unlocked GSM Treo, it'll work on T-Mobile's network.
I have an unlocked Treo 650 that I bought off the Internet. I pulled out the SIM card from my previous TMobile phone and voila. Works perfect. Google "unlocked gsm phones"
