Can anyone help me find a tree that is easy to climb located within the loop (in Houston) or in the Galleria area? By easy I mean low strong branches and no store managers or cops to bother you. Backstory: My 3-year-old wanted to climb the shelves in the public library and my wife told her she can't. Regretably, she said trees were for climbing on (don't ask me why), not shelves. My daughter ran with it and has since been asking for a tree to climb. My wife figures what the heck, why not, and will take her somewhere to climb a tree after her daycare today. But, she doesn't want to wander all over for a decent tree. So, if anyone knows a particular area, she'd love to hear it.
oh come one...who didn't climb trees when they were kids? It a lesson in life. 1) gravity. 2) consequence 3) always be able to get yourself out of a situation
There are some good trees by the Menil that meet your description. I'd try there and if you didn't find something there some parks near the Rice U Campus.
i cant' think of any either, or at least i haven't tried in 20 years. growing up, i climbed trees ALL the time though! we had a great one in our front yard but i drove by a few years ago and the new ppl chopped it off. good luck!
VoodooPope, thanks for the suggestion. My wife will try there. A gym seems overboard for a 3 year old. She just needs to get off the ground. A christmas tree so obviously won't work that my daughter hasn't even suggested it. It'd fall over if anyone tried to climb on one, and the foliage is so dense and prickly and the branches so weak, you wouldn't get anywhere even if it didn't. But, I appreciate the effort. I didn't think anyone would respond, even with a smart-ass comment.
Big magnolia trees are good climbing. One of my friends grandparents has this huge magnolia tree in their front yard. I used to climb it all the time as a kid. Thats up in Northeast Texas though.
Go rock climbing at your local mall. It is safer and saves you the hassle of finding a tree. http://www.houstonclimbingwalls.com/gallery.htm
I seem to remember there being some good climbing trees in Hermann park near the zoo. Not sure, though. You read my mind. Once you get started on a magnolia, going up the branches is like going up a ladder - super easy. I scared the pee out of my mom once when I was a kid. I scaled to the top of a very very high magnolia in one of our neighbors yards. There's almost nothing more fun for a little boy than to scare the living piss out of his mom.
You haven't lived if you haven't climbed a tree. I used to climb trees until one day evil squirrel caught me.
