Hey guys, I am leaving for Okinawa at the end of this week and was wondering if anyone has been? Any advice, tips, places to see, eat, etc.? I've been reading, around online, but I figure first hand knowledge from fellow Clutchfans would be helpful. Thanks.
Are you only traveling to Okinawa in Japan? Never been, but just got back from Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Kobe, and Hiroshima last month...amazing country!
If you're into diving, definitely do that. At least snorkeling, the water is nice out there. Go out and get some Yaki Niku as well as some good sushi. If you drink at all, try out Chu-Hi. You can find it at any convenience store and its pretty good.
Move to a small fishing village with your sensei, woo a local girl, help your sensei settle old scores without violence, help the village through a deadly typhoon, then use the drum technique when your rival challenges you to a duel, where you will be forced to choose between life and death. Oh and try your hand at this, i hear they do it in local bars: <object width="640" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/gfW3O29FlLY&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/gfW3O29FlLY&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="640" height="385"></embed></object>
Man, there a bunch. Marine and Air Force mostly, but ships pull in there as well. It was nice going to those bases and grabbing Chili's or Macaroni Grill. Don't get me wrong, I liked eating local cuisine, but food from home is nice when you haven't had it in a while. I'm serious about those Chu-Hi's though. They don't taste strong, but they'll sneak up on you.

You know Ms. 'PinkxX personally, then? She WILL do that, you know? FYI, the village was actually HAWAII. I went there last summer and saw some of the "Okinawa" village myself. There was no "shelter."
Just came back from Japan last week. Make sure you bring a lot of money. When people told me Japan was expensive, they weren't kidding. To eat/travel and play well, I would say at least $1,000 per week. Oh yea, a lot of Japanese don't speak English well, or refuse to because they're too embarrassed. Luckily...the larger cities have information booths at the train stations and the employees there understand/speak English. One thing I'll miss is Japanese beef. It's soooo freaking good. Imo, even the middle of the road Jpn beef is better than American prime. I didn't like the noodles that much. All of the noodle places I went to made the broth super salty. Didn't eat sushi cuz I'm not a fan of raw fish. Ohh..just checked a map. Okinawa is some small islands. Good luck, have fun and hook up with a cute Japanese girl if you can
I am stationed in Okinawa right now and a lot depends on where your staying. Are you going to be near the Bases or near Naha. Or are you going to be on the North side of the island near Nago. There are some amazing things to do here and fantastic places to eat at......but it all depends on location. Let me know where you coming in at and I can lead you to some cool places. Have a good trip!
Damn! I just woke up when I posted. I guess I need to raise my game on here huh? I will not disappoint in the future. Off to shave my ballfro!
Very cool...Are you there for a short or long time? I don't know much about Okinawa, other than there are a crap load of bases, but I'm sure you'll have fun...I would love to go to Japan and visit...have only been thru the airports...DaleDoback is probably your best bet of local info...
Unfortunately, we will not be going to any other region of Japan, just staying on the island. I will be there for about 2 weeks. I definitely plan snorkeling and the only attraction that is sure is the Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium. As for food, no thanks on the fugu. I will definitely try Yaki Niku and I don't drink but I might pick up a Chu-Hi. Thanks for those recs. I am kind of nervous as I don't eat seafood, but I don't want to just eat things that we have at home. Are there many non-seafood local dishes? I already told myself I will be a little adventurous, but I don't know how much I can take. lol Dale: Super cool! What branch of military are you? From what I know we will be staying in Yomitan Village. Also, what can I expect as far as transportation? I really appreciate the help. Thanks, everyone, for the suggestions so far.
