I was told by a beer guy at Spec's that this beer (the greatest beer on earth) is never coming to the USA again because Texas consumed too much of it and the Belgians were complaining that they couldn't get any. For those of you who don't know what a Trappist is, it's a specific kind of Belgain monestary, of which only six officially exist in the beer-brewing world, Chimay omnipresent yet sadly by far the least drinkable. What's the over-under on this beating my last thread--the Dogfish Head 120 IPA one, which got ZERO replies?
It's what drunk Elaine says "Jerry" is in Indian (or Hindi or whatever) in the backwards episode. I've since learned that it's actually "Djugdish," the original name of the Shaolin Death Squad, a decent band.
oh ok, well... Fru-Fru is a word I made up. I think it might have been the name of a poodle in a cartoon I watched as a kid.
There was a satirical news site I read in college called Who Got the Froo-Froo? I thought perhaps you were a puppet master behind it, but apparently not. You don't validate my life like the Froo-Froo did.
Is it gone for good already? If not I'll check out this area bar (I'm in Florida, not Houston), the kind where they have 100+ types of beer. I've probably tried around 50 of them, but the 'usuals' are 8-Ball Stout or Samuel Smith Oatmeal. The oddest I've had is Unibroue 11, which is in a wine-type bottel w/ a cork (definitely fru fru, I suppose). It's also 11% alcohol. Any other beer-snob beers that you recommend?
I missed that thread. I had a few dogfish 90's a few months ago and had a bitter aftertaste lodged in my throat for days...
never had it.... can you still buy it? pretty big fan of belgian beers, in fact they're my favorite. is st. bernardus a trappist? i've had a few of their ales that i've enjoyed.... unibroue (while not belgian) makes some pretty tasty belgian style brews; i've got a bottle of "terrible" in my fridge right now, and la fin du monde is great, especially for the price. big fan of delerium as well.
St Bernardus' ales are not original trappist ale, but it's very very good. Probably better than many. I had some Unibroue 2005 ale the other day, pretty good. The best I've had in a long time and highly recommend is Southampton Grand Cru - absolutely delicious.
no no...people can love Lone Star in a can and drool over Trappistes Rochefort 10. that said, I think the Spec's guy is lying to you about it's availability. In fact, I'll just say flat out that he is lying to you. I also think that beer is a class of Belgium, where you can love many Belgiums and not particulary crave that one. It's great...don't get me wrong, but there are MANY great Belgiums. that said, that said, Maybe I'm getting old. I just don't get too excited about bottled beer anymore. For instance, I went to Rice U with the St Arnold's maker and always wanted to love it and thought I did...i've given up know. St Arnold's sucks, in my well schooled (pun intended) opinion.. Drafts are the best. btw: my best find of last year was Pinedale, WY. Town of 4,000 just south of Jackson Hole...I was there for work. There is a micro on Main St. So freaking awesome. The year before that. My best find was Great Lakes Brewery in Cleveland. That is actually big in Ohio like St Arnolds here. Theirr "Dortmunder" on tap was sublime...as the fru fru's like to say. but like moestavern says, I drink Lone Star on tap more than anything....at Valhalla!
I should probably post this in the "confessions" thread, but I could be in Brussels right now getting **** faced on fru fru beer--granted, it's like 6:30 in the morning there, so drinking any beer right now would be somewhat manly. My wife went there for work, and I could have gone with.....just the price of airfare (well.....that and the opportunity cost of missed work {I'm 1099}). tomorrow......she heads over to Amsterdam What the hell was I thinking?
just when I thought Pole was the smartest man on the bbs...he does something schtupid like not going to the fru fru bierland with his wife.
Actually, this old man who has been out of college for a long time....and doesn't get drug tested at work.....has really been dreaming of those brownies in Amsterdam that my nephew keeps talking about.
