I'd say a resounding yes - perhaps if this isn't obvious.

There's no other logical reason to swap out Rafer for this guy Kyle. Can anyone say with a straight face that we'd be more competitive with Kyle over Rafer in the playoffs this year?

    Anyone? With a straight-face?

Morey is going for a young, 22 year old who isn't developed into a starter pg but clearly sees him as that - but can't be today.

And with only $28 million on the books for 2010 (over half of which is Yao and the rest Shane Battier - those two make up $24 mil) one has to wonder if this team is going to go through a metamorphis in the next year and a half:

    On contract:
    Brooks
    Dorsey
Yao (assumes he will be resigned)

In their last year (meaning will be expiring contract)
    Shane Battier
    Hayes
    Carl Landry
    Kyle Lowry
    Scola

    Gone:

    Rafer - traded already
T-mac (before next years trading deadline)
    Artest - not resigned
    Luther Head - not resigned
Brent Barry - dumped next year
    Mutombo - not resigned

basically brooks and yao because you can throw away dorsey's contract. Figure we'd keep Lowry, and probably Von Wafer & Scola

That's it. Landry could be gone, as easily could be Battier before the trade deadline in 2011. It's unimaginable to some degree but when you look at our future contract situation....Morey is clearly making a play for the future.

I agree completely. Morey is clearly making a youth movement and trying to get younger more athletic talent.

It's time to move on from the Rafer, Battier, McGrady and Yao era. Although I still want to see Yao a Rocket when he becomes a free agent.

Morey said he wants to be a player, but I think he would consider trading McGrady's expiring for someone with a longer contract, taking us out of the sweepstakes.

Heh... LBJ already has a body like a tank... but on Artest he looks like a tank on steroids.

Morey is focused on 2010. With all the contracts coming off the books, why not go for Lebron or Wade? I know it doesn't seem likely, but if we get that superstar with Morey's knack of solid role players, it would be interesting. Don't be surprised if we tank next year.

i love the future of the rockets for 1st time in a while i feel like rockets are putting together a group of guards that can run and get out on the break and give the rockets a few easy points each game with von wafer, Aaron brooks , kyle lowry, now if rockets can go out find young small foward in 6-8 6-9 range that can run and jump and maybe bigger 6-10, 6-11 power forward that can run alittle and block some shots then they could be in good shape going forward i love yao but be nice to have a fun up tempo team in there when hes on bench

Rafer was an expiring next year - this doesn't do anything to change our 2010 status

But we will still have a point guard.. Either Brooks or Lowry would at least stay, for the future.

yes it does. If Morey really does like Lowry then he just got a PG for 3 million dollars cheaper. Plus for 2010 we will have AB as either the confirmed starter or Lowry. Either way the PG just got cheaper freeing up room for other spots.

I disagree from the BBALL aspect but the position just got cheaper for sure. That frees up room.

I think this trade is also for the future as you mentioned. I think he has something up his sleeve again this summer. I don't think there are great FA this summer but with Morey you just never know. I like the team going younger and also being a possbible player in 2010 FA market. I would love to see Joe Johnson here with Yao. I just don't see LBJ and Wade comin to H-town

is it possible that the reason refer got traded is because Rockets want to resign von wafer next season? Give wafer that exstra million that we have left

There's no doubt, that with TMac injured, Morey no longer feels we are contenders, so he made a move that will better position us to bring us to that place in another 2 or 3 years. It's not a huge move, but a way of converting the current value of Alston, taking advantage of Orlando's immediate need to fill in for Nelson, and upgrade the position long term, while saving a few million to focus elsewhere.

There's no difference in when the contracts expire, but they can let Cook go and save his contract, while keeping Lowry's, end up a few million ahead, and upgrade the talent and youth. Net value.

Evidently, they are very high on Lowry as a future PG in this league they can "build around." Time will reveal how good their eye for talent will be. I think they feel they've got 3 good young guards to grow with now in Brooks, Lowry and Von Wafer, each with different strengths.

I think the team has done an admirable job so far at injecting youth into the team without getting much worse or taking on bad contracts. That's a sign of smart management.
