What do you guys think about the Rockets possibly trading down to get a better first round pick. They could package their 13 and 22, or one of their picks and a possible one from Orlando, to get a top 5 pick and a guy who can immediately help the Rockets. They could then draft a quality big man, in addition to signing a free agent. One team that could possibly trade their pick is Washington. A rebuilding team that already has its franchise player in Rip Hamilton, might want 2 quality players over 1 great one. ------------------ Visit www.StockSurge.net for your guide for investing and the Stock Market!
I would be all for that, as long as it is for Shane Battier. I'm not sure which team would trade down to us though...maybe Atlanta, or Washington like you said. I think we'd have to wait and see how the lottery pans out before deciding this, and if Battier would still be available if we did make a trade. ------------------
Hmm... a 13 and a 22 for a top-5 pick. How often has that happened? Yes it's a deeper draft, but you're saying you want a high-lottery pick for an almost-out-of-the-lottery-pick plus a crapshoot pick. I don't know how many teams would want to do that. I know I sure as heck wouldn't want to give up a top-5 pick if Curry, Griffin, Battier, etc. are on the board at the time. Let's put it this way. It's hard enough trying to move up 2 spots in an NBA first round muchless 8 or more without giving up a solid contributor on your team. ... although with the parity/depth of this year's draft, it may be one of those years where we see a r****ded trade like that ------------------ Yugo grills, Yugo mills, Check out the oil my Yugo spills...
Toss in Shandon or Mo in a sign-and-trade... Is that possible? ------------------ "Awesome baby!" Dick Vitale
I'll say it again, besides KORN being the best rock group, we trade all three of our draft picks and Cato and Williams to New JErsey for their 5-6th pick, depending on the lottery balls. We then get Eddie CUrry, hell Battier is nice, but he will probably be available at number 13 , if we get a good 6th pick, we draft, we have got to draft Curry, a project now, but hell he will prolly end up being as big as Shaq, as far as height and weight, and hopefully develop a game like Shaq ------------------ got milf?
Wow Dunk, you passed 4000 and you didn't start a thread so we could all say "congratulations"? I'm shocked.
Actually, what would work, is helping someone get down under the cap this summer. There are teams who might give up a higher pick, which would lower their cap in itself, and if we took a player in trade, giving them a cheaper player, such as Thomas, Rogers, or Collier. This assumes we are already under the cap to do that. For instance, the perfect candidate could be New Jersey, who is still hamstrung with Jayson William's 15m contract through this next year, with a team salary of 50m, which is probably 7m over the projected cap. Add another 3m with their two draft picks, and they'll have to pay another 10m in luxury tax. If they were able to ship off someone like Keith VanHorn, and get back someone like Kenny Thomas, they might swap draft picks, saving them 18 million dollars. That #6 pick would get us either Sagana Diop, Shane Battier or Jason Richardson. Of course, we just gave up Mo and Shandon too. Who would you rather have? Van Horn and Battier (or Diop) or Mo and Shandon? Another team might be Vancouver. They are at 48m, 5 over the cap, with another 3m in draft picks, and they are broke. Lets say they traded us SAR for Collier, Thomas and Rogers (maybe Langhi), swapped each other's lottery picks, and Houston gave Vancouver one of their later round picks. Vancouver would try to trade Houston's #13 to some team with #18 or lower, and get a future pick out of the deal, then forward that pick to Detroit, getting them out of a possible top 5 pick next year. This would bring them under the cap, saving them 16 million. They get rid of the luxury tax, get rid of a draft debt, still sign someone like Joe Forte at #23, gain a future draft pick, gain 3 potentially good players, and lose the guy who has no fire. Houston would gain their #4 pick and take Griffin, or Battier, Diop, or perhaps even Chandler. They could take Morris with their later pick. Once again, Houston would lose Shandon and Mo. That would be a heavy cost. But we would have Francis/Mobely/SAR/?/Dream. We'd have to trade Cato and Williams for a PF. Lets say we did a deal with Atlanta at #5. They are at 42m, with 3m in draft picks, taking them over the cap, and penalized another 3m. They send us Lorenzen Wright for Kenny Thomas and Jason Collier and trade draft picks. They might do that. We'd lose Shandon, but might still keep Mo. But at #5, we could get Diop, Battier or Richardson. That would be a better deal. We'd have to trade for someone like LaFrentz and Cheany for Williams and give them our later draft pick, then draft Forte with our other later pick, but then we'd be a little over the cap ourselves. We'd end up with: Dream/LaFrentz/Cato Taylor/Wright/Rogers Langhi/Battier/Bullard Mobely/Cheany/Forte Francis/Norris We lose Shandon any which way we go, and possibly Mo. Is whoever we would draft higher up worth losing Shandon and Mo? Hmmm. ------------------ the more I know, the more I know I don't know...
Wouldn't taking 13 and 22 and trading them for number 5 be moving UP in the draft? j ------------------ Some days you just can't get rid of a bomb!
The luxury tax does not going into effect if you're immediately over the cap. It is believed to be around 55 million. No way that Vancouver would trade SAR and a top 5 pick for a few roleplayers/borderline starters, and a late lotto pick. The Atlanta scenario (with Ren Wright) seems plausible as he's not very wanted. Denver won't be trading Lafrentz/Cheaney for Walt/pick unless it's possibly our lotto pick. If you can trade 13/22 and move up 8 slots, that's a no brainer. But convincing another team to do that is another story. ------------------ "That's been a lifelong dream of mine." -Vince Carter, after laying it in on a breakaway, much to the Vancouver crowd's displeasure.
We actually have 5 #1's & the Drew obligation from Chicago that we could trade. Just because we might not get the Orlando, Detroit, or Chicago picks this year, they are still picks that we will receive in the near future. With this thought in mind, all sorts of options open up to us. If we can trade Cato & Walt this off season, then pick up some key young FA's, resign our own FA's (at least the ones that we want to keep) & draft one or two of the top college players this year, we want need all those picks. This is the time for the Rockets to be aggressive & go for the gold. I'd like to see us refan the flames of the rumored Lafrentz for Cato trade. Maybe explore the opportunity of acquiring Elton Brand. Maybe acquire Jackson or one of the other major FA's & definitely resign Dream/Moochie/Taylor & then move up in the draft to acquire a stud SF or Center. Also, forget about Webber. He may be a stud, but imho, he's going to cost way to much. We can acquire enough solid contributors to go with the TEAM we have, to make a serious run at the championship. Of course, if one of our 5 balls pops up in the top 3, then we will really be in the drivers seat. A little luck never hurt anyone. ------------------ [This message has been edited by Hottoddie (edited April 21, 2001).]
No. 5 for #13 and #22. 1990 Kendall Gill for Loy Vaught and Tate George 1991 Steve Smith for Dale Davis and LeRon Ellis 1992 LaPhonso Ellis for Bryant Stith and Oliver Miller 1993 Isiah Rider for Terry Dehere and Chris Mills 1994 Juwon Howard for Jalen Rose and Bill Curley 1995 Kevin Garnett for Corliss Williamson and George Zidek 1996 Ray Allen for Kobe Bryant and Roy Rogers 1997 Tony Battie for Derek Anderson and Ed Gray 1998 Vince Carter for Keon Clark and Brian Skinner 1999 Jonathan Bender for Corey Maggette and Kenny Thomas 2000 Mike Miller for Etan Thomas and Donnel Harvey If I'm in the five spot, I'd do at least four of these deals. Its not that far-fetched. ------------------ Founder and President of the Houston Homers Club(HHC) - Are you a homer? Join now! The Rockets will be NBA champions. Believe.
Good job with the info, Puedlfor. btw, I have a strong feeling the Rockets will indeed do something like that. ------------------ It's my way or the highway!
Yes, I'm sure using hindsight most of us would, too. Unfortunately in the NBA, there is a "no take backs" clause in most draft pick trades. LOL! I'll go back to the old debate we had on this board several months ago. Tell me every stud that will be an all-star out of the upcoming draft and tell me all the supposed studs that will be flops in the NBA. Then I can give you credit for saying #5 for #13 & #22 is do-able. If you remember the threads from last years draft , you'll remember who everyone thought would be franchise players. Several people said the draft would be loaded with talent. Hell, we were supposed to have drafted Etan Thomas. Where is he playing again? That draft may turn out to be among the worst ever. Anything is possible, but if I'm an NBA GM, there's no way I'd trade the #5 for the #13 & #22 unless hindsight was on my side; which is why it rarely happens. ------------------ Yugo grills, Yugo mills, Check out the oil my Yugo spills...
Lafrentz we could get. Possibly. Brand? I wish, I wish, but I was reading the Chicago Tribune the other day and was reminded that the Bulls' season ticket holders are finally starting to waver. I don't know if the Bulls would trade their franchise player, unless he says, "I'm outta here, I've had enough, can't wait to take this experience to a real team as soon as my contract's up." Can we take Cato, Los, maybe Walt, and our #1 picks (ours, Orlando's obligation, Milwaukee's, Detroit's obligation, Chicago's obligation) to grab Chicago's #1 this year? Free up cap space so we can re-sign Hakeem, Mo, Mooch, maybe grab Marc Jackson, draft Shane Battier, that sort of thing? ------------------
Hou #13, Future Orlando pick, Future Det pick for Det #9. I see Detroit needing players and the rockets running out of roster spots. Is this too far-fetched? I would like to see the rocks move UP a couple of spots to insure a good wing, but keep the #22 to get a solid backup guard to replace the bolting SA. ------------------
DoD-Etan Thomas was stuck in the Dallas PF bind, and was "hurt" all season. He's now in Washington. With the zone, he and Jahidi White could make a nice tandem, lots of rebounding and shotblocking there. Though, that was a horrible draft in terms of impact players, maybe Moiso, Swift, Miles, and DJ will pan out, but it's certainly looking down. If we land the #1, we'd have so many options. I'd probably trade down/away, because you could get something nice for #1. Options similar Cato/#1 to Atlanta for Ratliff/their pick suddenly become available. Let's hope Walt becomes a little more valuable. I still look at the little monopoly we have on the Bulls' pick as a thing that could be careful. I'd rather have that than Rashard Lewis. Just kidding. ------------------ "That's been a lifelong dream of mine." -Vince Carter, after laying it in on a breakaway, much to the Vancouver crowd's displeasure.
Would any of you trade the #5 pick if it was the Rockets pick? Im geussing especially not for the 13 and 22nd picks and some overpriced or underskilled players. ------------------ The next time I have meat and mashed potatoes, I think I'll put a very large blob of potatoes on my plate with just a little piece of meat. And if someone asks me why i didn't get more meat, ill just say, "Oh, you mean this?" and pull out a big piece of meat from inside the blob of potatoes, where ive hidden it. Good magic trick, huh?
I really like the deal with Atlanta that Sherlock was talking about. I think they may be one of the more willing teams to trade for some reason. But, we could send them #13, #22, and Shandon for Wright and #4/5/or 6. Right now I would take Battier with the pick, because he is probably the safest pick. He does not have a lot of developing to do in the NBA...his game is already set. He's not some raw high-schooler who still needs to improve the aspects of his game. He could come right in and be a key player. He may not be an all-star throughout his career, but I am sure he will not be a bust. ------------------
