First off, I do not think the Rockets are going to strike a deal before the deadline. I felt pretty strong they were going to last week and I wish they would, but reality is maybe setting in that they can't right now. However, if for some reason they buck those odds and a deal is going to be struck, I believe that the chances are best they will work a deal with the Heat or the Clippers. Just wanted to post what I thought were some interesting notes regarding those teams from printed articles across the country this morning.
Palm Beach Post: Salary cap? Point guard Andre Miller probably is gone this summer, so some suspect he could be moved now — for another player with a low contract with years to run. Clips owner Donald Sterling has been riding the backs of his fellow owners for years, raking in profits generated by others but refusing to half-try to floor a genuinely competitive team. Some suggest it's time NBA commissioner David Stern forced the guy to sell, much like the league managed to oust former Cavaliers owner Ted Stepien. Strange. Stepien freely traded valuable draft picks while Sterling hoards them now for their low contracts.

Boston Globe: Dealing with deadline can be taxing
Note: Peter May makes up five fictional trades he thinks would work for both parties, and one of them is Elton Brand/Sean Rooks for Elden Campbell. The Hawks, along with a number of other teams, would like to pry loose some of Sterling's young restricted and unrestricted free agents. But the big question is whether the Clippers will part with anyone, and it appears they will not. Andre Miller, the point guard they're not crazy about, is a restricted free agent this summer. So are Elton Brand, Lamar Odom and Corey Maggette. Everyone knows this - it's not new. Take one look at him assaulting a fan at Toys-R-Us in Seattle in 1996, and that's really all you need to know. But damn he seriously looks like a hypocrit by majorly slamming ESPN (Chad Ford?), TNT and other "reporters" for posting false stories/trade rumors. He does have this to say about the Clippers: Clippers: Unlike every other opponent who's unwilling to acquire contracts longer than ones they're prepared to give up, L.A. would take on players on long-term commitments. That's because half of Donald Sterling's team is an unrestricted or restricted free agent; re-signing them may prove prohibitive, whereas any acquired player will come equipped with an exact pay scale. With that in mind, sources tell me the Clips might entertain overtures from the Jazz for Elton Brand. No offer has been made yet, but there's no question Utah is acutely interested in the slightly undersized power forward. The question is, would Brand be interested in re-upping with the Jazz this summer? If the answer is yes, a proposition of Matt Harpring and a No. 1 pick (about 150G shy of meeting salary/trade requirements) is imminent.

Intersting. Not what i would expect from Brian Grant, being happy in a losing enviroment. Looks quite unlikely that the Rockets would make a move for a maxed-out player who doesn't want to leave his team. As much as I wanted this deal to go through i guess that makes things a helluva lot harder. Guess all that's left is dreamcasting about Elton Brand, Andre Miller and the Clips...
Clutch, Thanks for the links. I also agree that Rox will stand pat unless there's an offer they can't refuse. Can't see them moving anyone except Rice, & doubt they could get enough value for Cuttino to justify trade - he's "damaged goods" on the open market now b/o his me-first attitude. D R
Quick, name an under 30 year old player with 3+ years left on his contract averaging about 5 mill a year, and has averaged 20+ ppg within the last 2 years? It rhymes with Muttino Kobley. Elden Campbell for Brand and Sean Rooks is just funny. So Clutch- since we're talking Heat and/or Clippers, if we make a deal, it's likely going to be a pretty major one (Grant, Jones, Miller, Brand)?
I just think it is going to be really difficult for any significant deals to get done with anyone. There will be some last-minute pressure deals but with the luxury tax out there and so many quality free agents available this summer, cap room is at a premium. Why else would players like Olajuwon and Mourning, who won't suit up again, be on the block. They would immediately create cap space for any team in need. Makes me think Glen Rice will be a hot commodity next season.
Thanks for the summary, Clutch. I was really surprised that there was not even one trade announced during the all-star weekend. As far as I could remember, usually something went down during that time. If we could get Brand or Miller, that would be great, but I really doubt it. Also, with Miller's recent play, I am not even so sure about him anymore.
I'd have Cato over Rooks. He's horrrrible. I don't want Miller, still think he is overrated, and lacks leadership. Brand would be nice, but not to have a good 4 and no SG. Grant is not going to make much impact. Jones is almost the same as Cat. Probably more expensive and not as good. JMO
As I've said before, Andre Miller is what this team needs - someone who can run an offensive and create easy shots for others. I'd move Mobley for him and Piatkowski right now. Why Mobley? Well, he's locked into a relatively sane contract (important for the cheap Clips), meaning they can let Corey Maggette and Quentin Richardson walk, and he's already friends with Lamar Odom (who they actually want to keep). For our part, people talk about this being a young team, but Mobley is 27. I think that Yao, Eddie, Boki, and even Steve have time to improve, but Mobley will never be any better than ball-hogging streak-shooter. He's peaked and we need to cash him out now.
Clutch, Would you care to explain the talk last week? Just wanted to know what was being discussed and with whom Thanks! Tariq
Really appreciate the links and info, Clutch. I wish there was something brewing... not for the sake of making a trade just to shake things up (although shaking things up is needed, somehow, whether it's moving Cat to the bench as a 6th man or getting a new assistant), but because the guys just don't seem to blend well. It's probably youth and lack of playing time together as a team, but I really thought they would have some consistency by now... that they would have gelled. The rollercoaster is getting very old.
Mobley + Moochie for Andre Miller and sign an NBDL point who can shoot. Better yet, find Gabe Muoneke wherever he is and sign him.
Clutch, thanks for the info. I think I still have that SAR pic you did a few seasons ago. While I'd like for this team to make a deal, especially to get Brand or Miller, I think we'll be fine standing pat. We've definitely shown signs of brilliance this year, and unlike two years ago, we've done it against the good teams. I think that's a great foundation to build on. We will learn to not play down to the competition, and this team will be a contender shortly.
If there's any way that the Clips will take Mobley for Miller, the Rockets will run, not walk to the phones to seal the deal. Besides, because Andre is a restricted FA this summer, the Rockets could match any offer from Utah. The Clippers appear to be leaning towards signing Odom and Brand since they've taken a liking to Jaric. Also, as previously mentioned, Maggette and Richardson can walk since they have Mobley in this deal. From the Rockets perspective, we land a pass-first PG in Miller. Francis moves to his natural position at the 2 guard, much like Iverson did in his 3rd year. Passing comes naturally to Dre, who could find Yao and Posey for easy baskets. Also, Mo Taylor would be around to knock down an open jumper or two. Of course this plan sounds kickass on paper, it would only work if Rudy T puts down the Jack Daniels and opens up his damn eyes.
I still don't understand why Posey doesn't get more time at the 2 guard. It certainly can't be because that position is suppossed to be for your sweet shooting spot up lpayer, because Mobley certainly isn't. If we can get Brand for Mobley and fillers, I think the starting lineup of Francis, Posey, Morris, Brand, Ming would be very very very good. Morris certainly isn't starters quality, but when a team has that much talent and assuming everyone understood their roles, you can plug in CBA players and still do well (see Chucky Brown, Pete Chilcutt, etc. - Rudy himself even glazed over this in his last 610 talk).
Because Rudy has his rotations. I don't know. He barely tries new things. And he usually does like once, but then returns to his old stuff. The only reason he would mix it up is if there are injuries. I DO NOT KNOW WHY EITHER!!!
I just hope I don't have to commit suicide before it happens. "Petition on Rudy" - 94 replies Clutch thread - 16 replies What is happening to this BBS?
Well you know me -- that's what I would want I can't really give much in the details department there. 1) I promised who told me that I would not say anything, and 2) I have not been able to verify it with anyone else, so it's not for sure that it's 100% accurate. So nothing I say is based on that D). But ask yourself a few questions: We all know many are not happy with Cuttino, but looking at the situation, is Cuttino happy? And if an NBA player is not happy, especially one who thinks he could be a star, what is he likely to do? All I know is the day Cuttino Mobley takes off the Rocket uni is a happy day for me. Great offensive talent... not the right player for this team, imo. As for the Heat... I've heard Jones' name and only recently Grant's name. I think the Heat would be interested in Glen Rice. I don't think Les would take on either contract though, and I think that's as far as that goes. Heat willing, Rockets probably not. I also want to add that to think I know exactly what is going to happen or exactly what is happening is far from the truth. I'm just piecing together a few puzzle pieces I've been given and passing a few hints along (probably against my better judgement).
Sorry for the horrible grammar Clutch. I agree with you about Cuttino, btw. I feel as if I'm a horrible person whenever I acknowledge that he drives me crazy... but that's a subject for another day. Besides, I wouldn't want to encourage a lurking GM to review those Mobley tapes too many times. Until the deadline we should "highlight the bravado and ignore the cluelessness". So, uhhh... I heard that Cuttino once... errr... passed the ball.
I would hate to see Cuttino Mobley move away if Francis would be frustrated not being able to play with his buddy, but if Francis really want to win and head into the League looking to improve his team, then the trade would be a positive note. I'm not saying trading Mobley for another player would be the best deal, but experiments can happen and it's how it goes being an NBA player. Rudy is a chemistry guy, and he should know that Cuttino would not fit in the rotation if he is not playing well with Ming or Francis. Since Ming came in I think Mobley lost his touch and is starting to fade away from the team. Almost an Outcast. But Mobley has the talent, the way he drives to the basket.. but he also has poor fundamentals on the game sometimes. I just hope what the team does is best, and they know what it is.
