With the tournament in full swing, I was trying to think of no name players who led their teams deep into the tournament....by no names i mean guys who never made it to the NBA or you never heard of them until the tournament Last year we had Jai Lewis of Geroge Mason. Didn't have amazing numbers, but he clearly led that George Mason team. My All time favorite is Harold Arceneaux. That guy was amazing in March (I believe 98)....He took out UNC with jamison and carter. I'll never forget Weber State's run.... Arthur Lee...that guy had unbelievable heart, but never made it to the NBA either... Miles Simon and Tyson Wheeler were fun to watch too...i dont think they ever got to the NBA...
tyus edney of course.. as short a career as bryce i think. will bynum with the layup to send GT into the finals! but maybe that's just me as a fan in attendance.
carmelo travieso and edgar padilla It was joy to watch that UMASS team, let's pretend those NCAA violations never happened
Wally Szcerbiak, while not a no name technically did have an awesome run and put himself on the map and into the first round. Galen Young also played out of his head one year IIRC
Rumeal Robinson who played for the University of Michigan in 1989. He had a great NCAA tournament run that year. Bobby Hurley - Duke Steve Alford - Indiana
Jeff Hodge and Junie Lewis (South Alabama) - "Peanut Butter and Jelly" Don't even remember if they made it far, but I always remember the names.
Randolph Childress from Wake Forest. I don't remember if Duncan was on the team or not, that's how good he played in the ACC tournament. Guy a had a sweet looking shot. I think he was drafted by Portland, but didn't ever hear much about him after that.
people often compare or contrast the tourney from the bowl system in football. one of the things they point to is this very subject, these guys getting there once in a life time shot at fifteen minutes of fame at these small schools. The NCAA tournament is probably the only event you can become famous for not winning. is that really a good thing?
Bo Kimble and the left handed free throws. He was drafted pretty high and the NBA and stunk it up but he'll always be remembered for leading Loyola to the elite 8 and shooting left handed free throws to start a game as a tribute to a teammate that died.
