When you shake the Peanuts in a Peanut can, why do the large Peanuts rise to the top? When Coffee Stains dry on a counter top, why is their a ring on the outside? When you walk on wet sand, why do you get little halo's of dry sand behind you? ------------------ humble, but hungry. They don't. The smaller peanuts fall to the bottom. Larger peanuts create larger air pockets between them, in which the smaller peanuts fall. Hope this clears up any confusion. ------------------ Behad Sergeant at Arms of the Clutch BBS Asking the question: What is more dangerous, an AK-47 or a scooter?
Not quite the answer, but good try. ------------------ humble, but hungry. [This message has been edited by PhiSlammaJamma (edited January 31, 2001).]
Huh? Right! What the heck are you talking about? ------------------ Behad Sergeant at Arms of the Clutch BBS Asking the question: What is more dangerous, an AK-47 or a scooter?
I'll give a few more people a chance to give the answers, then I'll post them. They came from a PBS special last night. Oh, and Behad, your answer is a lot closer to answering the third questions than it is the first question. ------------------ humble, but hungry. Ok, I've been searching all of Scientific American Frontiers website and have not found the answers. Were these questions on the show that talked about why chili peppers are hot? ------------------ Behad Sergeant at Arms of the Clutch BBS Asking the question: What is more dangerous, an AK-47 or a scooter?
1) Answering the same as Behad I guess is wrong, but I have to give tribute to a process called 'winnowing' that Behad is describing. It's how you get reversed cross grain structures in beaches. I guess it also could deal w/ the density of the peanuts. 2) As Rod Stewart sang --- E*vap*o*ra*tion, a whew ew. 3) When you step on wetsand, you compress the water out from beneath you, pushing all of the lighter (less mafic) minerals away from you in piles. When you step off of the sand all of the water rushes back to where your foot was. Of course everything I just wrote is bs. ------------------ I keep plugging away, but I just can't get a 3 way to work on realwife.com [This message has been edited by Achebe (edited January 31, 2001).]
You got the right show! I'd never seen it before, and I didn't see the whole thing, but it seemed one of the bigger parts of the show was about why people laugh...They linked it to walking upright. ------------------ humble, but hungry.
I know I laugh out loud when someone is walking upright, drinks a lot, then is no longer walking upright! ------------------ Behad Sergeant at Arms of the Clutch BBS Asking the question: What is more dangerous, an AK-47 or a scooter?
What....wake? or morning? ------------------ Behad Sergeant at Arms of the Clutch BBS Asking the question: What is more dangerous, an AK-47 or a scooter?
HeyPartner, I was actually just reading the reason why you get a boner in the morning. It was in one of those magazines for men, or was it YM that I was reading??? Ugh ... I can't remember the exact reason, but its not sexually related, or the fact that you gotta goto the bathroom real bad in the morning. It had something to do with the muscles relaxing and the blood vessels filling up as a result ... something to that effect?!? Rockit ------------------

1) The larger peanuts dont rise to the top, the smaller peanuts fall to the bottom. haha, no really, smaller pieces will always fall to the bottom of the shaken can. 2) The ring is formed on the outside because the tensile stength of the coffee is greatest on the outside ring, which keeps it in a circular form. the outside draws more coffee from the center. the center then evaporates quicker. 3) The little halos of dry sand are a result of your foot increasing presure of the sand, which forces water out. when your foot moves on, the sand is dried. ------------------ The next time I have meat and mashed potatoes, I think I'll put a very large blob of potatoes on my plate with just a little piece of meat. And if someone asks me why i didn't get more meat, ill just say, "Oh, you mean this?" and pull out a big piece of meat from inside the blob of potatoes, where ive hidden it. Good magic trick, huh?
These are the answers according to PBS... 1) Science is still befuddled by this mystery, if you can believe that, but the experiments they have done suggest that when the can is shaked all the materials in the center of the can move toward the top. Both Small and Large peanuts move upward together. The Smaller peanuts then rotate toward the sides of the can, and slide downward along the edge. They create a circular pattern like you would see in a convection oven. The Large Peanuts do not move in this pattern and only move toward the top, but science has no logical explanation for why...yet. Why study this? Every year somebody dies from incorrectly mixed medicine in a capsule. They suspect that particle size is the problem.... They have also considered how to move large objects through a seemingly inpenetrable wall of tightly packed material...uhhhmmm...like a ghost would do. 2) The spill is first stopped by a groove or ridge in the table, even if you can't see it, it's there. Nomar was correct in stating that the tension causes the evaporation of the middle first, but it also causes the little particles in the coffee to jet from the Center toward the "ridge" at an alarming rate. The particles then form a wall when they hit the ridge and slowly pack together. The ring is formed from the Particles in the coffee. Why Study it? The Packing industry is very intrigued at how the particles pack in perfectly. 3) The pressure of your foot causes the particles in the sand to separate and loosen. They are no longer packed. The space created between the particles allows the water to pass through the particles to the "bottom". The top of the sand is therefor dry and sits on all the water. You can do this experiment with a jar of sand and a layer of water. Why study it? I have no idea. ------------------ humble, but hungry.
