Who got the shorter end of the stick? Two disgruntled owners. Yet the players love them. Both taking their respective teams to the playoffs despite the odds. Both first round exits. Who got screwed over more? As in a blatant slap in the face? Considering both their achievements and personal sacrifices. JVG's Red Rowdies, Joe Torre's 5 million dollar ONE YEAR contract. Like the majority of the bbs, I'm glad Adelman is our coach now but could the Rockets have handled the JVG situation better? How do you feel about the way Yankees' handled Torre's situation?
JVG's dismissal wasn't appropriate but it obviously time for a change. torre was more disrespected and the players and fans wanted him back.
Neither guy was wronged. As much as I dislike the Yankees and like Torre (because he's a good guy), they were within their rights to let him go. The one-year offer (that they knew he would turn down) was to cover themselves in case things blow up next season. They paid him well and let him finish his contract. From what I heard the Yankees brass went to dinner with Torre afterwards so the split was amicable. The Rockets were also within their rights to send JVG away although the gutless way they did it makes me despise Les. Yet JVG deserves no sympathy at all.
Relevant? How so? Torre is far more accomplished in his profession than JVG. And I have no problem with either owner switching directions, it is their team after all. DD
JVG got shafted more. He was getting overtures from the GM after the playoffs that the team still wanted him back, but then he kind of had the rug pulled out from under him when Les said he would only be brought back if he ran the team like they told him to. Torre was given an offer for a one year deal with the caveat that if he got to the World Series he would be extended. If the Rockets had offered JVG the deal Torre got, he would most likely have taken it. Neither one was treated particularly well and both substantially improved on the team they inherited. I wish both were still in charge of my teams, but I don't have the money to buy the Rockets and the Yankees.
You might want to explain how going from a 9th seed to first round exit is a substantial improvement.
