Something interesting. How many un-origional scripts were produced into movies in 2001? In otherwords, a sequal, remake, parody, or adaptation of a book, video game, comic book, or historical event. I count the following from the top 50 grossing movies, but I'm sure this list can be added to. (19 out of 50, including 8 of the top 10.)

1 Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone $294.0 million
    4 Rush Hour 2 $226.2
    5 The Mummy Returns $202.0
    6 Pearl Harbor $198.5
    7 Jurassic Park III $181.2
8 The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring $180.0
9 Planet of the Apes $179.7
    10 Hannibal $165.1
    11 American Pie 2 $145.1
    13 Ocean's Eleven $140.0
14 Lara Croft: Tomb Raider $131.2
    15 Cast Away $128.9*
    18 Dr. Dolittle 2 $113.0
    24 Cats & Dogs $93.4
    29 Along Came a Spider $74.1
    30 Bridget Jones's Diary $71.5
    31 Scary Movie 2 $71.3
    43 Moulin Rouge $57.0
    50 Enemy at the Gates $51.4 [/B][/QUOTE]

I can see the remakes and sequals being unoriginal, but I don't see book adaptations as really being the unoriginal. Sure there was already material there to go on, but it was original material. I always was under the impression that the majority of films orginated from a book somewhere.

Hmmmm..in that case the list should be bigger then. The following can be added(all from books):

    Shrek
    Blow
    The Others
    The Princess Diaries
    Chocolat
    Exit Wounds

I'm sure there's more, but I didn't have time to research them all. I still don't think that adaptations are unoriginal in a sense. If that's the case, then some of the greatest movies in history....are "unoriginal".

Yet more proof that creativity in Hollywood is dead as a doornail.

I wonder if it's a lack of creativity or just a stifling of creativity by the powers that be(i.e. pandering to the clueless masses for the almighty dollar) Or perhaps a combination of the two.......
