Not sure if this has been done before or not, but I'm going to have some extra time this summer to watch movies, so I thought I'd go and rent some that I haven't seen. So, what are all of your top ten favorite movies and what in your eyes puts them in your top ten?
This is too hard, you have to list by genre or something. Do you like drama, comedy or action? Do you mind watching black and white movies? Do you mind reading subtitles?
All right, since I'm drunk and my stack of DVD's is above my TV...here's a list of ten great movies (plus descriptions!) The Man Without a Past: A Finnish dry--and by "dry" I mean DRY--comedy about a guy who gets mugged after coming home via train and loses his memory. He leaves the hospital unattended and leads another life...brilliant...top five of 2003. Wild Strawberries: Ingmar Berman's masterpiece about an aging man who realizes his faults as a human in dealing with others who love him. Top three all time for me. A Hard Day's Night: Every movie/music lover should see this. The Seventh Seal: Another Berman piece. Metaphors galore, philosophy, religion, all translated in a totally interesting way onto film. Whale Rider: The best family film I've ever seen. One of the last lines by the grandfather toward the end of the film breaks me every time... Russian Ark: A trip through the Russian Hermitage Museum and through centuries of Russian history. One (!) ninety minute shot. A true work of art, in the fullest sense. I could argue this is the greatest film I've ever seen. Try me. Citizen Kane: If you haven't seen it yet, do yourself a favor. Amadeus: Ditto. One of those films that is just scene after scene of brilliance. You can just start in the middle and finish before the end and feel satisfied. The Transporter: The most fun action movie I've ever seen. Frida: Slightly overlooked, encapsulating biopic. Magical.
I guess I'd like movies that are fairly new. Like last 20 years. Some of the movies on my list to see so far are: Goodfellas, Shawshank Redemption, and Se7en. Just to name a few.
its hard to make a list... but....uhm...uh here we go... donnie darko what dreams may come memento silence of the lambs the crow dazed and confused chrouching tiger hidden tiger pi the big lebowski mulholland dr. the green mile platoon pulp fiction resivoir dogs goodfellas godfather I godfather II heat lord of the rings I, II, III evil dead II slacker clerks mallrats chasing amy friday spirted away poltiergeist poltiergeist II the exorcist blade runner star wars empire strikes back return of the jedi kids the ring shawshank redemption seven requiem for a dream saving private ryan there ya go thats off the top of my head
Memento is very, very good. Sticking to the last 20 years makes eliminates most of my all-time favorites, but I'll list some that aren't necessarily my faves, but that I enjoyed a good deal. Some under-rated flicks I've seen on video recently: Confidence (even though Ed Burns is obnoxious, the movie was pretty good). About a Boy A Slight Case of Murder (William H. Macy) Matchstick Men Payback (It's definitely no Point Blank, but I kinda like it) Out of Sight Nothing to Lose (one of the funniest lines in movie history: "You must be really fast") Insomnia One Hour Photo Leon: The Professional (International Cut) Election (one of my favorites of all time) Catch Me If You Can (don't know why I loved this movie as much as I did) AutoFocus Young Sherlock Holmes (one of my all-time faves) Ed Wood Donnie Brasco Ghost World Bowfinger Barton Fink Quiz Show That's all I can think of off hand.
In no particular order: Lord of the Rings Trilogy (Yes, it is ONE movie!) Star Wars Original Trilogy (ESB, ANH, ROTJ) Raiders of the Lost Ark Pulp Fiction Silence of the Lambs Jurassic Park The Matrix Batman Blazing Saddles Shawshank Redemption Office Space Trading Places Police Story Young Frankenstein More than ten there, but those are the ones off the top of my head.

Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb President Merkin Muffley: Gentlemen, you can't fight in here! This is the War Room! Gen. Jack D. Ripper: n the name of her majesty and the Continental Congress, come here and feed me this belt, boy. Maj. T.J. "King" Kong: Survival kit contents check. In them you'll find: one .45 caliber automatic; two boxes of ammunition; four days concentrated emergency raisons; one drug issue containing: antibiotics, morphine, vitamin pills, pep pills, sleeping pills, tranquilizer pills; one miniature combination Russian phrase book and bible; one hundred dollars in rubles; one hundred dollars in gold; nine packs of chewing gum; one issue of prophylactics; three lipsticks; three pair a nylon stockings. Shoot, a fellah could have a pretty good weekend in Vegas with all that stuff. Gen. Jack D. Ripper: Do you realize that fluoridation is the most monstrously conceived and dangerous communist plot we have ever had to face? Major T. J. "King" Kong: Well, I've been to one world fair, a picnic, and a rodeo, and that's the stupidest thing I ever heard come over a set of earphones. You sure you got today's codes? General Jack D. Ripper: Mandrake, do you realize that in addition to fluoridating water, why, there are studies underway to fluoridate salt, flour, fruit juices, soup, sugar, milk... ice cream. Ice cream, Mandrake, children's ice cream. Group Capt. Lionel Mandrake: Lord, Jack. General Jack D. Ripper: You know when fluoridation first began? Group Capt. Lionel Mandrake: I... no, no. I don't, Jack. General Jack D. Ripper: Nineteen hundred and forty-six. Nineteen forty-six, Mandrake. How does that coincide with your post-war Commie conspiracy, huh? It's incredibly obvious, isn't it? A foreign substance is introduced into our precious bodily fluids without the knowledge of the individual. Certainly without any choice. That's the way your hard-core Commie works. Group Capt. Lionel Mandrake: Uh, Jack, Jack, listen, tell me, tell me, Jack. When did you first... become... well, develop this theory? General Jack D. Ripper: Well, I, uh... I... I... first became aware of it, Mandrake, during the physical act of love. Group Capt. Lionel Mandrake: Hmm. General Jack D. Ripper: Yes, a uh, a profound sense of fatigue... a feeling of emptiness followed. Luckily I... I was able to interpret these feelings correctly. Loss of essence. Group Capt. Lionel Mandrake: Hmm. General Jack D. Ripper: I can assure you it has not recurred, Mandrake. Women uh... women sense my power and they seek the life essence. I, uh... I do not avoid women, Mandrake. Group Capt. Lionel Mandrake: No. General Jack D. Ripper: But I... I do deny them my essence. General "Buck" Turgidson: Doctor, you mentioned the ratio of ten women to each man. Now, wouldn't that necessitate the abandonment of the so-called monogamous sexual relationship, I mean, as far as men were concerned? Dr. Strangelove: Regrettably, yes. But it is, you know, a sacrifice required for the future of the human race. I hasten to add that since each man will be required to do prodigious... service along these lines, the women will have to be selected for their sexual characteristics which will have to be of a highly stimulating nature.
Killing Zoe Dawn Of The Dead (Original Director's Cut - Not the new one) Goonies Run Lola Run Amelie Star Wars Raiders Of The Lost Ark Evil Dead Series Citizen Kane, Psycho (All Hitchcock really), Harvey, Inherit The Wind, Maltese Falcon, Grapes Of Wrath, The Birth Of A Nation, Freaks, The Producers (Original with Zero Mostel), Godfather Trilogy, Just about any Kubrick film etc...
1. Rocky -- just a great story about someone making the most of an opportunity. 2. Terminator 2 -- I don't know why, but I just love this movie. I think a lot of it is the theme -- "The future is not set, there is no fate but what we make for ourselves". 3. Platoon -- Great movie. Shows the depths of humanity. 4. American Beauty -- This is probably higher on the list, but I dunno. I think it's a fascinating movie with so many themes and such a great collection of characters. 5. Pulp Fiction -- Another GREAT movie with great characters and an engaging storyline. 6. Lord of the Rings Trilogy -- I agree, one movie. Great all around. 7. Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves -- It's not a GREAT movie, but for some reason or another, I love it. 8. The Matrix -- Just all-around awesome. 9. Pi -- VERY unique and creative. I memorized Pi to 30 decimal places because of this movie. 10. Field of Dreams -- All-around, one of the greatest sports movies ever. This is certainly not what I think are the best movies of all time or anything, just my favorites.
