Given the nature of some of the current debates in this forum, I was wondering what you all consider the greatest cities in the world. The criteria you want to use to arrive at this conclusion is up to you...where you'd most like to live...greatest history...greatest culture...most exciting...most like to visit..whatever. But I think it's an interesting question. Oh, and for the sake of eliminating the obvious, let's assume that no one includes the city where they currently live.

My top 5 are...

1) London, England
2) Rome, Italy
3) San Francisco, USA
4) Paris, France
5) Amsterdam, Neth.

1. Chicago
2. San Francisco
3. Houston
4. Albuquerque
5. Lake Tahoe Area

I'm only listing cities I've visited, and it's obvious I need to visit more.

Oh dang, I guess Placedo, Texas is out of the running! :D I'm just picking of the top of my head and won't put TOO much thought into this:

1. Tokyo, Japan: I know its crowded, but Japan's pretty cool and modern. Not to mention its history and culture. They also have the highest life expectency, from my geography book.

2. Miami, USA: Ohio Baby! Naw, just kidding. Miami seems like a really cool place to live and is by the ocean and stuff like that. Plus, its in the greatest country in the world, USA!

3. London, England: England's pretty cool. Pretty much like the US and has a ton of history.

4. Cancun, Mexico: Went here for vacation a while back. Seemed pretty cool and had a bunch of ruins nearby. Plus, gotta love the weather!

5. Houston, USA: Just a little biased here! ;) Is nearby where I live and I like where I live. Get to live in the greatest state in the US, Texas!

I wish I could partake in this thread. But, I'm not close to the line-up you guys have experienced. I can say that Bahston and Houston are my favorite US cities.

I've been to most all US cities and I get tired of NY and SFs pretentiousness. No one is "real" ... it is all one big revolving door of people who can only afford to live there for 1 or 2 yrs....it seems, especially the green card people.

As for foreign cities...all I know is Spain. Everytime I travel, I only go there, because my best friend lives there and married a Barcelona girl...lucky bastid...I'm so freaking jealous.

As for Spain.

I like Madrid better than Barcelona for the very reason I stated about American cities.

I really want to go to Florence and Prague and Austria. Also Beijing and someone's idea of the best "laid back" Indian city. Australia quite possible could be my favorite country if I could just try it out.

1. Paris, France
2. Edinburgh, Scotland
3. London, England
4. Verona, Italy
5. San Francisco

Rome, Florence, Metz (France), Dublin, and Madrid all wanted to be up there, as well. I love NY, but would not want to live there, so I didn't include it.

Some cool cities here already.

My selection is based on my momentary (drunk) mood (and still no spelling errors, heyp...er :)):

1. Rome, Italy;
2. every other city in Italy;
3. Barcelona, Spain;
4. Miami, FL;
5. New York, NY;
6. Paris, France;
7. London, GB;
8. Houston, TX (for sentimental reasons :));
9. Edinburgh, Scotland (hey rimbaud - it's close enough to the whisky distilleries...but the weather still sucks);
10. Copenhagen, DK and Stockholm, SE (the chicks are amazing).

Worst cities:

1. Albany, NY;
2. Guetersloh, Germany;
3. most other cities in Germany;
4. Salt Lake City (not that I have ever been there other than on a stopover, but that's where the Utah Jazz have their home);
5. Paris, France (it would be great, but there are too many French people there :D).

London, England - I spent three years there and they were
the best.

Orlando, USA - Disney World and nightclubs! It simply does not
get any better. The only reason London is
number 1 is because english girls are easy.

Amsterdam, Netherlands - Legal budda, need I say more?

Boston, USA - We are talking in terms of social life right. Well,
Boston barely edges out Austin. I think Boston
girls are easier than Austin girls. And I look good
with a tie on.

Austin, USA - Everything absolutely mad wack crazy I have ever
done was most likely done here either downtown or
in some apartment off mopac. This is also the only
town I have ever done time in.

1) New York
2) Paris
3) Venice
4) London
5) San Francisco

Honorable mentions: Rome, Florence, Liverpool, Geneva, Auckland, Memphis, Austin, Anchorage

I hear Melbourne and Sydney are really neat, as well as Wellington here in New Zealand. The city I most want to visit is Tokyo.

Since we're going over worst, my worst cities are..

1) Los Angelos, Calif...I have never been to a city with less of a soul.
2) Buffalo, NY...Just awful.
3) Oshawa, Ontario....Like Buffalo, but smaller.
4) Las Vegas, Nevada...Too gaudy for words...
5) Baltimore, MD....Kinda like a hole, but a big one...

And, Hayes, yes I am jealous, both ways...

Isn't London always cold. Shocked to see them in so many top 5's, but I guess I have to visit there. I've visited touristy type cities, but I've really only lived in texas. I love Austin but I think every city is what you make of it, but of course what can you do in SLC or Biloxi?
I've also been to China and I was pretty impressed. NOt sure I would want to live there.

Cities in the US I would like to live in (no particular order)

1. Denver- love how energetic they are. Seem to support their teams.

2.Chicago - biggest small city in the world?

3. NYC- maybe the most vibrant city in the world. Lots of culture.

4. LA- seems like a city you can get lost in. Love the weather.

5. San Fran- Absolutely beautiful. Culture.

Note, never been to the northeast and I don't care for the deep south.

1. Tokyo - went there with the UH Football team in 90 to play Arizona State in the Coca Cola Bowl. That was the absolute coolest place I have ever been. Tip - Don't go wandering alone without a card that has your hotel address on it.

2. Amsterdam - I am dying to check this place out.

3. Sydney - #2 on my places to go list.

4. Salzburg - It is surreal to see buildings and castles that were around a few hundred years before Columbus rediscovered America.

5. New York

In no particular order,

1) Miami, FL
2) Phoenix, AZ
3) Rome
4) Toronto (but only when it is warm)
5) Sydney, Australia
6) Tokyo
7) London
8) Brussels
9) Athens, Greece
10) somewhere in Norway (wherever Heath's home town is...I would love to meet my hero in person!)

I also wouldn't mind visiting some cities in Germany like Cologne, Leipzig, Berlin, etc., however, SJC's post makes me have 2nd thoughts on that.

Oh, I would never want to visit San Francisco (My father told me about the terrible traffic and the changes in weather-temperature wise) or anywhere in France.
