Top al Qaeda operative caught in Pakistan

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan (CNN) -- The man linked by authorities to several al Qaeda terrorist attack in the last 10 years -- including the September 11, 2001 attacks -- was among three suspected al Qaeda operatives arrested Saturday in Pakistan, coalition intelligence forces confirmed to CNN.

Pakistani intelligence sources told CNN that they had been closing in on Khalid Shaikh Mohammed for several days, before the Pakistani security forces and FBI agents arrested him in a raid on a house in Rawalpindi, Pakistan, about 9 miles (15 km) from Islamabad.

Mohammed, a Kuwaiti national, was indicted in 1996 in the Southern District of New York for his alleged involvement in a Philippines-based plot to blow up 12 U.S.-bound commercial airliners in one day, according to the FBI. That indictment landed him on the FBI's list of 22 Most Wanted Terrorists, issued in October 2001.

Investigators and other sources have also linked Mohammed to the bombings of U.S. embassies in Kenya and Tanzania in 1998.

Sources told CNN last year that Mohammed was one of three people who knew the details of the September 11 attacks and was with bin Laden when the al Qaeda leader was informed of the attacks' success.

Last April, German investigators linked Mohammed to the truck bombing of a synagogue in Tunisia. They said that three hours before the deadly bombing, the suspected suicide bomber telephoned Mohammed.

Authorities had hoped to find Mohammed during a raid in Pakistan last September 11, when another key al Qaeda suspect, Ramzi Binalshibh, was arrested.

One U.S. official has called Mohammed the Forrest Gump of al Qaeda because of all the attacks to which he's connected. Gump was a movie character who found himself at the center of many key moments in modern U.S. history.

Mohammed graduated in 1986 from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University in Greensboro, with a degree in mechanical engineering.

This may be President Bush's biggest victory since 9/11. This guy is supposedly the man behind al-Qaeda. Hopefully the Pakistanis can torture the whereabouts of Bin Laden and Mullah Omar out of him before turning what's left of him over to us for trial and execution

Mr. Muhammed's Butt: meet Mr. Hot Poker...

I just hope that the Pakistanis turn him over to us. If not, then they just might set him free. They have a history of refusing to turn over high-value captures such as this.

This was reportedly Al Qaeda's #3 man. Replacement for their last #3 which we killed in Afghanistan... They seem to have as much as problem keeping their #3s as we do nabbing their #1 and #2.

I kinda hope the Pakistanis keep him there, but with our operatives also there. That way we don't have to worry to much about the tree huggers getting upset that the US Govt is torturing him. Then as soon as we get teh information we want he can suddenly pass away because of a rare infection (IE a gunshot wound to the side of his head).

I think the Pakistanis know the political implications of letting him go, but right now I woudl rather have him held by anotehr country se we can use unorthodox tactics to get teh information we want.

Great catch by the Pakistanis and the CIA!

I thought the Bush administration wasn't focused on Al Quaeda anymore. After all, it's generally not headline news so it must not really be happening.

I've heard that they're going to extradite him to to a third country (I've heard Jordan mentioned) so that our laws can be skirted WRT interrogations... Sounds like they really are going to pull out the hot pokers for this one.

    Good.

Why not just throw him into a US maximum security prison. He'll loosen up a bit after he's been Bubba's b**** for awhile.....

OBL is dead...dead...dead...dead. This guy is THE man in charge of reorganizing Al Qaeda after the US strikes in Afghanistan. OBL is dead...or so near death he's irrelevant.

This is huge...this guy knows where tons of terrorist cells are, where the money that funds them is, and all kinds of other useful tidbits.

They need to extract the info from him quickly before money and terror cells move to new locations.

If they are going to get information out of him via torture, then I would suggest making him watch a John Tesh performance. ;)
