At least according to MSN. Don't agree with much of the list and its a bit of a pain to navigate but might be good for discussion. http://movies.msn.com/paralleluniverse/50-greatest-sci-fi-films/photo-gallery/feature/?gt1=28130 Top 10 10. Close Encounters of the Third Kind 9. E.T. The Extraterrestrial 8. Aliens 7. The Thing from Another World (AKA The Thing) 1951 Version 6. Terminator 2 Judgment Day 5. Star Wars Episode V The Empire Strikes Back 4. Alien 3. The Matrix 2. 2001 A Space Odyssey 1. Blade Runner
I consider Star Wars Fantasy, I can't find how to view the entire list, where is Predator and Total Recall. Yes Ahnold owns this list
Top three movies are garbage. Back to the Future, The Navigator and They Live not even being on the list shows a lack of imagination. And the 80's version of The Thing was far betterr than the 50's version. Sure is a slow day. pgabriel, you have to click on the next button to view each movie on the list individually.
Irrelevant publishing. No "Big Trouble In Little China" on the list. Additional supporting evidence...no 1980 "Flash Gordon" movie with the accompanying Queen soundtrack. Travesties, I tell you. Straight dope travesties.
The Thing From Another World was good, but not that good, and Forbidden Planet belongs in the top 10.
I don't have a problem with the top 3. I do have a problem with ET being in the top 50. Terrible movie.
I apologize in advance to Deckard, but I never found Blade Runner as compelling as its reputation even after seeing it a few tiimes.
Deckard will not get an apology from me  As a hard core fan of Blade Runner, I'm happy to see it as ichi-ban! I said it before and I'll say it again, this movie IS my top SciFi movie EVER. But its influence on me occured the day it came out and nothing has changed. I could see if somebody saw years later they might not be hip to it, but at the time, it was a kick-ass movie.
1: Star Wars (no doubt about it, this movie cemented Sci-Fi as a viable cinematic entity and not just a niche product) 2: Empire Strikes Back (better than Star Wars, but SW takes the top spot because it enabled everything after it) 3: Wrath of Khan (can't have a Sci-Fi movie list and NOT have a Star Trek movie on it, and Khan is not just the best Star Trek movie, but in its epic and operatic scale, it is just one of the best science fiction movies period) 4: Aliens (this is not only one of the best science fiction movies ever, but is also one of the most thrilling and heart-pounding movies of any type ever) 5: The Matrix (amazingly, threw every cool concept they could think of into a blender and hit 'Puree', and it actually worked! Great great movie) 6: Avatar (it has become cool to bash this movie, but if the weakest thing about it was that it felt a little 'overly familiar' in the story department, , then by all means, throw it in the trash.. on the other hand, once again, James Cameron broke new ground and delivered on what he promised, which was to set the bar extremely high for effects-laden movies, as he did with Sci-Fi Honorable Mentions The Abyss and Terminator2. And speaking of Arnold..) 7: Terminator 2 (Not only was this a fantastic rousing adventure all on its own, it introduced the world to what CGI could really do in a movie. Arnold has a few films which deserve mention also: Predator, which was great, but hinging the whole climax of the movie on the laughable 'trap' Arnold sets by somehow miraculously chopping down a gigantic tree, (which must have weighed, oh, I don't know, at least two tons or more?) MOVING it, and then HOISTING it up into the limbs of another tree by simply using nothing more than some vines and his rippling muscles... well, it was just silly at that point. They could have thought up any number of more-plausible traps, but no.. lol.. and, Total Recall - which was a pretty good movie, but really crappy special effects and a low budget kept this movie from being really special. If any movie back then calls for a remake today, this is it. So T2 gets the nod for me, as there is absolutely no thought ever to remaking a movie like T2, because it was, and still is, so great) 8: Jurassic Park (This movie was as much of a mind-blower in its day as Avatar is in this era. Absolutely stunning CGI, good performances for the most part, and even Hollywood's meddling and a weak script couldn't keep this from being Spielberg's greatest Sci-Fi triumph) 9: Inception (Possibly the most-talked-about movie of the last decade, Inception proved that audiences could be trusted with having to think and pay attention to a fast pace and intricate concepts, as long as it all holds together and doesn't contain any glaring holes or nonsensical behavior. Very PKD-ish) 10: Pluto Nash (hehehe just checking to see if you were still reading..) 10: District 9 (This movie did what science fiction is supposed to be all about - couch a meaningful tale within an at-least-somewhat-plausible framework of fictional science.. in this case, answering the big 'What if?' question of what might happen if and when aliens finally do arrive on our little planet.. and they turn out to be brainless lost drones. Excellent film, top-notch effects, well-performed) Now I know there are TONS of good science fiction movies out there, and I know my list is primarily more focused on more recent films. That's not because I don't like or respect earlier films such as 2001 or Silent Running or Planet of the Apes, etc (except ET - ugh I have never understood the love for that thing. It's not BAD, it's just not anywhere near as great as people think, at least imho). It's just that now, with the technology and ability to create essentially ANYTHING we can imagine, I simply generally LIKE the more modern sci-fi movies more. Again though, always fun stuff to talk about.
That list is a bit pathetic. Solaris 2002??? Mars Attacks!??? War of the Worlds 2005??(I did enjoy the first half) Independence Day??? I would replace most of that list with: The Time Machine - (1960) Children Of Men - (2006) Jurassic Park - (1993) Ghost in The Shell - (1995) Robocop - (1987) The Road Warrior - (1981) A Clockwork Orange - (1971) Akira - (1988) Contact - (1997) 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea - (1954) Back to the Future - (1985) Avatar - (2009) The Abyss - (1989) Superman - (1978) Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan - (1982) Frankenstein - (1931) Bride of Frankenstein - (1935) Planet of the Apes - (1968) District 9 Inception
