This has been probably been done to death, but... 1. The Shawshank Redemption (Tim Robbins only good movie besides his hilarious portrayal of Merlin in Top Gun) 2. GoodFellas (Pesci, De Niro, Liotta...perfection.) 3. Go (Great structure...3 funny stories...and Liman is a great director) 4. High Fidelity (Cusack is my fav actor...and Jack Black is the funniest man alive.) 5. The Godfather ("I'm gonna make him an offer he can't refuse." "Don't ever take sides against the family, Fredo.") Honorable mentions: Swingers, Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Top Gun, Spaceballs In spirit of Rob Gordon's Top 5 Lists, What's your top 5?
Whoa, now i know somebody else also liked Go. As for my top five movies, i cant do it. I am a little bias and will go on and list the past 5 movies ive seen.
Here Goes - 1. Back to the Future ( 2 & 3 are great also - not top 5) 2. Terminator 2 3. Saving Private Ryan 4. Tommy Boy 5. Shawshank Redemption *** Honorable Mention *** Die Hard, Boyz N' The Hood, Braveheart, Forrest Gump, Red Dawn, Good Will Hunting, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, The Matrix.
Good grief this is a hard question. Comedy? Drama? All of the above? Whew. I have to go with the mix of films I like that I also think are great films. Crap, I'll have to go with 10. 1. All the President's Men - An amazing cast (Dustin Hoffman, Robert Redford, Hal Holbrook, Jason Robards) and a tremendously well-written script. Every time the film is on cable, I can't help but watch. Probably the best movie that I really really like. 2. Malcom X - Denzel Washington is amazing and Spike Lee does an incredible job making the film look great. It was well put together in every sense of the word. 3. Annie Hall - I love Woody Allen and this is my favorite of his. It is well-written (like everything he does), hilariously funny and groundbreaking in many ways. Diane Keaton is terrific. 4. The Matrix - I wasn't sure whether or not to include this one. It wasn't the most well-performed film I've ever seen and the story was a bit sketchy but the combination of special effects and attention to detail paid to it make me want to watch it 1000 times and never get bored. 5. Jaws - There is nothing like Richard Dreyfuss saying, "I think you may ignore this particular problem until it swims up and bites you on the ASS!!!" The chemistry between Roy Schieder and Dreyfuss is uncanny and Rober Shaw's portrayal of Quint was killer. That fake-ass shark still scares the holy crap out of me and I've seen the damn movie like 100 times. 6. Forest Gump - Tom Hanks at his finest. I've liked him in many films but this one always makes me smile and cry. Plus, Gary Sinese is a man among boys when it comes to his performance in this film. 7. Amadeus - This one still blows me away. F. Murray Abraham is simply stellar in his role as Salieri and Tom Hulce is terrific as Motzart. This is still one of the all-time greats. 8. Hoosiers - I don't think this is close to Gene Hackman's best work (I'd nominate French Connection or The Conversation for that (see below)), but it is a terrific movie. Barbara Hershey is great but the star of the cast is easily Dennis Hopper and his portrayal of, Shooter, the drunk father of one of the players. He was incredible in that movie. Plus, no movie about basketball can be all bad! 9. Star Wars - Just a classic. It is still one of my all-time favorite movies. All other sci-fi movies, particularly space films, compare themselves to this one. It is the gold standard. Harrison Ford was awesome. 10. North by Northwest - My list wouldn't be complete without Hitchcock. I loved Vertigo, Rope, The Birds, Psycho and Rear Window (see below), but North by Northwest is by far my favorite. Cary Grant is totally cool and Eva Marie Saint is the classic Hitchcock cool blonde. The scenes in the corn field and at Mt. Rushmore are just amazing. Honorable Mention: The Birdcage (maybe the funniest movie ever made), Rear Window (more Hitchcock), American Beauty (just terrific), The French Connection (Hackman's best), Mo Betta Blues (more Spike and Denzel), The Conversation (another Hackman classic), The Shawshank Redemption (gets me every time), Philadelphia (Hanks and Denzel together), Apollo 13 (Ed Harris Oscar snub in this one AWFUL), The Natural (more Redford), Raiders of the Lost Ark (action classic), Saving Private Ryan (IMO, Spielberg's best), Goodwill Hunting (really awesome film).
Citizen Kane The Shawshank Redemption The Empire Strikes Back The Godfather Dr. Strangelove In no particular order.
Oh goodie I love movie stuff. Nobody has mentioned Amelie! Ya buncha heathens!!! 1. The Godfather 2. Jaws 3. Amelie 4. The Shawshank Redemption 5. Goodfellas/Unforgiven (tie)
Any movies with: Jimmy Stewart John Wayne Orson Welles James Dean are at the top of my list. There are no actors anywhere close to these 4.
Just off the top of my head ... Aliens The Jerk The Thing LOTR The Shining I reserve the right to change my mind at any any any time.
1. The Great Outdoors - no cinematic classic but it was my favorite when I was a kid (i think i liked the cussing), I still find it funny, and it always get the sentimental pick as #1 2. Jurassic Park - wow, the dinosaurs actually look real for once and the whole movie was just plain good. loved goldblum's character after this it gets kinda fuzzy but i'll just rank em how i feel right now 3. The Godfather - I love mob movies and this is the best one 4. The Shining - scariest damn movie ever. i still get nervous watching it 5. Saving Private Ryan - I like war movies and this was awesome seeing as I love the whole star wars thing (not as big a fanatic as some people) maybe i shoulda included one of the first 3 but i just couldn't. maybe i woulda liked goodfellas more if he hadn't ratted them all out at the end. for some reason i was pissed that liotta wouldn't just die like so many others in his line of work had before and let all the rest keep their lifestyles. also honorable mention to forrest gump.
I'm going to do a top 10 with some honorable mentions 1. North by Northwest 2. Raiders of the Lost Ark 3. Vertigo 4. The Shining 5. The Empire Strikes Back 6. Forest Gump 7. Dead Poets Society 8. Full Metal Jacket 9. Amadeus 10. A Clockwork Orange Honorable mentions - Psycho, Notorious, Boyz in the Hood, The Birds, A Few Good Men, Total Recall, Rear Window, Basic Instinct, Marnie, The Fugitive, Strangers on a Train, Carrie, Midnight Run, Rebecca, 2001, Interview with a Vampire, The 39 Steps, Mr. Holland's Opus, Meet the Parents, Eyes Wide Shut, Star Wars (the original), Return of the Jedi, Lolita, Good Fellas, Eight Men Out, and Shadow of a Doubt. I guess it's obvious who my 2 favorite movie directors are!
1.) Goodfellas, One of the best movies ever made. Liotta and De Niro were awesome. 2.) Boyz In The Hood Sobering look at what life is like in Compton, Its a must see movie. 3.) Star Wars Perhaps the Greatest Sci-Fi movies of all time 4.) The Matrix A Gen-Y type Star Wars, great movie, just hope the Sequels don't dissapoint 5.) Pulp Fiction Uma - good, Samuel L Jackson swearing profusely - very good. 6.) The Godfather Old School Mafia movies are my favs. 7.) Mostly anything with Jim Carrey. 8.) Austin Powers I have never laughed so hard in all my life at these movies, I hope the 3rd is as good. 9.) Caddyshack Classic Acting with hilarious cheap comedy and plenty of boobs, What more do you want? 10.) Armageddon - I must say this was a very well done movie, I was nearly in tears at the end.
In no particular order.... Jurassic Park Lord of the Rings Trading Places Shawshank Redemption The Castle Star Wars IV - VI Indiana Jones Trilogy Matrix Blazing Saddles The Birdcage .....it's slowly turning into a list of movies that I liked, but those above are the best movies I've ever seen.
Also in Dj Rob Gordon style, my top 5. 1. Fight Club 2. Rushmore 3. The Shawshank Redemption 4. The Thing 5. High Fidelity
Crap..I seriously forgot some important movies. 1. The Breakfast Club - cheezy, but dang do i love those 80s movies 2. Dead Poets Society - good call Manny, when Ethan Hawke says "Captain My Captain!" at the end...I weep like a little school girl. (not really ) 3. Full Metal Jacket - Everybody always talks about the 1st half of the movie...but I love the 2nd half just as much if not more. 4. Field of Dreams - best baseball movie ever...gets me every time. Others: Training Day, Grosse Point Blank, Psycho, American History X, A Few Good Men...dang too many to list.
Mine never stays the same, except for number one. My picks today: 1. Pulp Fiction 2. The Killing 3. High Fidelity 4. The Sting 5. Fargo In case you don't get too many responses, here's a good thread: http://bbs.clutchcity.net/showthread.php?s=&threadid=26111&highlight=fiction I'm always down for movie threads though.
a bit unconventional but here: 1. Raising Arizona - it is not that funny until the 7th or 8th time you see it. - I love just about everything the Cohen brothers have done. 2. Pulp Fiction - This movie blew my mind. I had never seen anything like it. 3. The Unforgiven - This will be a classic. 4. Interview with a Vampire - The one Tom Cruise Movie that I like 5. Die Hard - great action flick Of course, this is the contemporary list.
Very hard question to answer, but here goes my Top 5: 1) Die Hard - The original. Often imitated, never duplicated. Alan Rickman is amazing. Great plot, great action, great entertainment. 2) LOTR - Already a classic. Acting is phenomenal, action is fierce, and my God, the cinematography! Simply astounding. 3) Fight Club - Fincher is awesome. His direction is so good, he almost makes the movie by himself. Brad Pitt is incredible here. Edward Norton shows why he's one of the greatest actors of our (well, at least my) generation. 4) The Matrix - Original and fresh (well, mostly), this movie rules. I can watch it over and over again. That to me is a definition of a good movie. Yeah, Keanu is not the greatest actor, but he doesn't need to be in this. Ubercool actors Laurence Fishburne and Hugo Weavering make up for any "Woah!" statements Keanu utters. Did I mention Carrie-Anne Moss in tight black clothing? 5) The Empire Strikes Back - The best of the Star Wars movies. Need I say more? (Yeah, my picks are pretty commonplace, but hey, they're my picks...)
I respect the hell out of that. 1.) The Godfather Part II 2.) Rocky 3.) LOTR 4.) The Godfather 5.) Terms of Endearment
In no particular order Pulp Fiction Shawshank Redemption Memento Scarface Goodfellas Honorable mentions: Three Colours trilogy, Mo better Blues, Training Day, Resevoir Dogs.
my favs: 1) The Godfather 2) The Godfather Part II 3) Braveheart 4) LOTR 5) Scent of a Woman 6) Mallrats 7) Fight Club 8) American Beauty 9) Billy Madison, Happy Gilmore 10) Jurassic Park
