Geez, I don't even know if I can name 10 movies that came out this year. Oh well, I'll almost surely leave something out that I liked, but here goes: 1. Office Space 2. American Beauty 3. Any Given Sunday 4. Man in the Moon 5. Talented Mr. Ripley That's all I could really rank, although I did see some more that I sorta liked, but really couldn't justify putting them in a 'best-of' type list. Some of those were Dogma, Green Mile, Phantom Menace, Sixth Sense, Election, and Flawless. RM95, I can't believe you included HurlyBurly on your list! That's the one with Sean Penn and Kevin Spacey, right? I usually like those guys, but I thought it was pretty 'blah'.
Kagy, I'm glad I didn't put my over-hyped movie of the year topic in there, I may have been banned. Freak, pretty much anything that Kevin Spacey is in will be in my top 10! However, that movie did kind of depress me.
Rm95: I liked Hurly-Burly. How about "A Simple Plan"...? If you guys like grown-up movies, I'd have to recommend that one. ------------------ A broken coffeepot in the dishwasher is worth five stitches in the wrist.
umm RocketMan, are we talking about movies in the 4th quarter of 99?? All those you listed are still in the theature .... ...The question that burns in your mind ... "What is the Matrix?" ... no doubt, the best!
I find it strange that no one has mentioned the one movie that got the most "press" on www.clutchcity.com (it was .com back then). The Blair Witch Project
SpaceGhost -- my sentiments exactly. In my opinion The Matrix was fantastic. Phantom Menace and Toy Story 2 also were my favorites of the year...
No way a Star Wars movie can be over-hyped! Blair Witch Project was without a doubt the most over-hyped movie of the year. Was that really supposed to be scary? Give me a break! ------------------ I follow the NBA, but I am a ROCKETS FAN!!
Space Ghost, actually 6 of those are still in the theatre. Three Kings and Bringing Out the Dead are at discount theatres. Run Lola Run, 10 Things I Hate About You, Iron Giant, and Hurlyburly are gone from the theatres. Toy Story 2 is the most recent. The rest are close to coming out on video. However, since when does it matter what quarter of the year a movie came out? My favorite movie of 1997 was Donnie Brasco. It came out in March. 1998, Out of Sight came out in June. I don't discriminate by quarter!! BTW, I'm sorry if I led some to believe that Phantom Menace was the most over-hyped movie of the year. That dubious honor does go to The Blair Witch Project. Any movie where you root for the "victims" to get it in the end, can't be considered a scary movie.
Blair Witch - Chris rock had a good joke. He said "It cost them 64,000$ to make that film. Ha! Somebody is sitting at home with 62,000$ in their pocket right now..and laughing." Blair Witch - Way overated. Last 2 minutes scary, but other than that, boring. Toy Story 2 - Awesome. A+ Stuart Little - For some reason I'm glad I saw it, but to this day I don't know why. It's different. Wholesome. General Daughter - Worst movie ever. Shakespeare in Love - Awesome movie American Beauty - Too weird for me. Not my favorite movie. Tarzan - Not bad for a cartoon. Very cool 3-D effect A bugs life - Ok. Great animation. Horrible story. Ant Z - Awesome movie. Great characters and animation. The sixth Sense - Pretty cool. Nice suprise at end. Bone Collector - Great movie until last 2 minutes. The ending sucked. Still, overall, good movie Deepest Bluest - Good action movie. One huge moment that freaks you out. Bad acting, but a good movie. Office Space - Pretty funny for a low budget film. Three Kings - Interesting portrayal of war, but was it good. Not really. Phantom Meance - Needed some work. Was geared toward a younger generation, when it should have gone after the audience it already had. Matrix - Good flic. [This message has been edited by PhiSlammaJamma (edited January 11, 2000).]
I haven't even heard of a bunch of those movies. Some of them have not even come out around here. Some of my favorites (some might be from late '98): 1) Elizabeth- This is one of my favorite movies. I don't care if it is slightly (fine...very) inaccurate. It's still an awesome movie. The music is great and Cate Blanchett is gorgeous. Anyone agree on that last one, BTW? Not too many people seem to share that opinion with me... 2) Phantom Menace- I just love everything with the name Star Wars. The movie was not as bad as they said. In fact, it was awesome. I don't understand how Titanic beat us (Star War fans). 3) Sixth Sense- The little kid pisses me off, but it was a great movie. The ending was especially surprising. 4) The World is not enough- I'm a great Bond fan, and this is the best of Pierce's work so far. Too bad Q died...I loved that guy. I can't think of others. I saw Saving Private Ryan and the Thin Red Line this year in theaters, but I know those came out in 1998. They would have been on the list also. ------------------ Francis+Charles+Dream-Pippen= Rockets 2000 NBA Champions
You have seen more films than I have, simply because it takes some time until we get them in Germany. But: Blair Witch IS THE WORST MOVIE I HAVE EVER SEEN. It was ridiculous, I don´t know how someone can actually like the film. The perspective sucks, bottom line. When my pal said it wouldn´t switch to a normal perspective, I was completely shocked. Thanks PhiSlammaJamma for your post, that´s exactly what I think. I had expected a better ending, though. Plus, the actors are so incredibly bad... Some critics may like the film because of the camera-perspective, but I was bored as hell and I don´t know how a normal peson can actually enjoy watching it (without getting sick). UARGH. ------------------ What do you expect from someone who beats up his fiancee?
man on the moon is the greatest movie made in the 90's .rocketman , the iron giant? ten thing i hate about you???? whats up with that???
Well, I am an odd ball. 1) Sixth Sense(best ending of a movie in years) 2) Blair Witch Project(I grew up around the woods. Never, ever was scared of them. Saw the movie. Not only will I won't go camping for a while, but had to sleep with the night light on for 3 weeks. The ending traumatized me. Picturing it now gives me goosepimples. Ok, sue me.) 3) Analyze This. ( I was ROLLING on the floor) 4) Shakespeare in Love(Great movie. Great acting. Great everything.) 5) Green Mile(Cried like a little girl most of the movie. Anything with miracles and religion usually moves me.) Everything else I can't remember. Ok, so I suck!!
Almu- don't tell me that you liked Shakespeare in Love more than Elizabeth! Please! ------------------ Francis+Charles+Dream-Pippen= Rockets 2000 NBA Champions
My 2 cents: Phantom Menace The World is not Enough Sleepy Hollow (Thats about all I can think of at the moment) and End of Days- This movie really suprised me. It was actually good, in my opinion anyway. I went expecting Arnold to defeat Satan with a hand grenade strapped to a Bible or something. I was impressed. BTW- I HATED Fight Club. ------------------ Proud Cheerleader 'til we move to New Orleans 302 [This message has been edited by Lynus302 (edited January 12, 2000).]
Forgot the Matrix. Good one. Ace- I think that Cate Blanchett is pretty hot. I saw Elizabeth on the way home from England (how appropriate). I loved it. ------------------ Proud Cheerleader 'til we move to New Orleans 302
I'd have to put Arlington Road on that list... Somewhere in the Top 5 and definitely a finalist for best ending.
