You may laugh because you hate the guy, and in fact I hate the guy, but one of the reasons Ron Artest is such a great defender is basic fundamentals.

He isn't particularly quick, doesn't have great hops, but has quick hand and feet, and textook footwork.

He always always always forces the guy he's defending away from his favorite move, from his favorite hand, and from his comfort spots on the floor.

He must study a lot of film to recognize all the offensive tendencies that most other defenders ignore.

He's far from perfect on the offensive end though, but he does know how to use his strength and leverage to score inside over taller people who jump a lot higher.

Others fundamentally sound: Duncan, Kobe (yeah, I hate him too), Cassell, Baron Davis, Garnett, Kirilenko, LeBron, Nash

non-stars with great fundamentals: Battier, Luke Walton, Richard Hamilton.

On the Rockets T-Mac, Yao, Wesley, Juwon, Deke, and Barry are all fundamentally sound. Rest of the NBA Duncan, Kobe, Nash, Pau, Kidd, the entire Pistons starting lineup including Big Ben, Carter, Shaq, Manu, AI, Dirk, Kirilenko, KG, Allen, man there are a whole bunch! Who says the NBA isn't fundamentally sound anymore? :p

Who is Z? RR is right, Dirk should not be on anybody's list.

Because he's not quick enough to play defense? If that's the case then you can't include Sam Cassell and Steve Nash either.

Kidd has good ball-handling skills, passes very well, gets lots of assists, and can score. But he ranks 84th in the NBA in free throw shooting.

Yao and Wade are too turnover prone to be among the most fundamentally sound players. McGrady's jumper is also too inconsistent. He has this little kick when he shoots threes, and he seems to fall backwards a lot, even when he's wide open...

Of course, "fundamentally sound" is a subjective term...if it looks ugly, but it goes in, who's to say it's not funamentally sound?

Yao is one of few big man left that still use the hook shot consistently, that should be considered "fundamental".

If you're a big man in the NBA, but without a consistent low-post game...I have problems calling you fundamentally sound.

Dirk has a very fundamentally sound jump-shot...but that's pretty much it. He has lots of trouble working in the post. Pau Gasol is significantly better in that respect. As far as big men go...Duncan, Gasol, and Yao would be the only ones I say rely predominately on fundamentals both to score and defend down low. Garnett and Brand could be included since they're very good at boxing out and operate along the baseline. However, I think they're a bit borderline. Garnett rarely uses post moves to get a high-percentage shot...relying primarily on jumping/dribbling to create space between him and his defender. Brand shoots a lot of jumpers from up high as well, and gets a lot of put-back points. No knock on them though; they're still very good players.

Duncan is overrated. He has trouble shooting free throws.

as long as free throws aren't counted,

Shaq, offensively very sound, defensively sound as far as what his abilities allow, don't ask him to cover the PR.
