I feel that there are too many one-dimensional players on the rockets roster.

From this playoffs, we can see that most of Boston and LAL players can play well at the both ends; especially for their starters. In other words, no obvious weakness for their starting line-up. Bench players provide engery and fill the need in special situations. I think that is the main reason why they are in the finals right now.

In contrast, too many one-dimensional players or speicalists on the rockets roster. Martin, Budinger & Brooks are offensive specialists, and Scola's defense is so so. Hayes & Battier are defensive specialists. In fact, Yao & Ariza are only two rockets can play at the both ends, although Ariza's offense is not consistent and Yao has trouble to defend PnR.

I don't think the rockets can contend with most of players are one-dimensional players. The rockets need a big roster change.

p.s. I know that Morey has done a great job to draft rookies in late 1st round and early 2nd round. But, unavoidable, those players have obvious weakness. If the no.14 pick is not enough to draft a good rookie who can play well at the both ends, the rockets need to move up.

If you're partly implying that Lakers' bench is better than the Rocket's...

I laugh at you good sir. Minus Odom everybody else is scrub compared to our rocket bench.

I agree with the poster above. Take away Boston's and Laker's superstars and the remainder players would not be able to win more than 30 games.

However, the number of their superstarts fill most of their starting line-up.

Boston big 4 and LAL big 3.5

That is pretty much every championship team is built. You don't win with role players.

i've said this before....which is why a bosh like trade is important in my view...you have to find a way to either impprove the backcourt defense or give Yao help inside. I like our players, as im sure many of us do, but i think the best thing is to get rid of Scola AND brooks. nothing wrong with them as individual players, but i think we need to sacrifice them to make this teammore balanced.

I'd say form a trade package around brooks and scola to bring a star PF who can play both ends, have the other team also include a pick and/or a solid back up center. Give lowry the starting job.

That leaves our only defensive weakness being martin. (lowry/martin/ariza/PF/Yao)....We'd acquire a back up C from the trade and Hill is solid as the Pf back up. Bud can handle the 3 spot and Taylor is fine at SG, he won't get many minutes anyway if Ariza and Bud also plays some SG.

that leaves the back up pg spot open...either

    A) use picks and overseas assests to trade for one or a high pick
    b) use highest pick owned to draft one
    c) bring in Lull

or D) use A-C + lowry to trade for an even better starting PG and fill the back up Pg spot with a D leaguer or FA.

I know we all want depth, but like someone else mentioned, the starters are really who win rings. You may have a back up play an important role here and there, but ultimately you're top 5-6 are going to be out there most of the time. I think depth is important in along season, but once you shorten the season and games by getting in tight situations you need chemistry and flow. You dont get get playing too many players and making constant subs.

I made a similar point a couple weeks back. Players like Maxwell, Hakeem, Horry, OT, Elie were potent on D, but also had offensive punch. Sprinkle in a little more O with Kenny Smith and Cassell and you have a Championship team.

A high percentage of GMs have missed the mark on the importance of the 2-way player. Ray Patterson did a good job in assembling the 94 team and layed a good foundation for the Trail Blazers as well...

With that said, I like Battier, Chuck, Budinger, Brooks, Martin, Scola, Ariza who play one side of the court much better than the other. When you have that, there is a permium on playing with chemistry and covering for each other...

Lowry and Yao play both sides decently even, consistently.

I don't think Lowry is a good starting pg. He has an obvious weakness -his shooting.

One dimensional players are fine, you just cant have scrubs getting signifigant time.

We have no more Luther Heads, or Rafer Alstons, so we are good to go. I think you will find before the season starts that we will have one of if not the deepest team in the league.

Boston got lucky to get 'the big three' and that Rondo turned out to be so good.

LA got lucky with the Gasol trade.

Teams like that don't grow on trees. You can't just snap your fingers and make it happen. Morey is doing the best job possible with what he had to work with i.e. the remnants of the failed Yao-McGrady experiment.

That being said, I think there might only be two players on the team that most Rocket fans would rather NOT be on the team, Jeffries (because of contract) and Andersen (hasn't been consistent enough). That's not too shabby considering what it was just a few years ago.

Aaron Brooks - Excellent offense, sub-par defense.
Kevin Martin - Excellent offense, sub-par defense.
Trevor Ariza - Excellent defense, average offense.
Luis Scola - Excellent offense, horrible post defense.
Yao Ming - Excellent offense, decent defense.

I ll probably get bashed for this but our biggest weakness in our starting line up (if Yao is healthy) is Martin. He relies heavily on getting to the free throw line to be productive.

Now think of the big picture.

In the playoffs, referees are not going to call those ticky tack fouls Martin will probably get during the season.

Martins defense will not be able to hold his own against Kobe, Manu, Melo.

Our team is missing that bull dog. Just how Ron was and Tracy back in the day.

Kevin Martin is soft and its gonna suck when the playoffs come and he cant score because the refs are not calling fouls for him. He is the definition of one dimensional.

Didn't Detroit win with Aguirre, Dantley, Rodman, Salley, VJ, Thomas, the rest? They just had a good balance of offense and defense.

You will not be bashed, your assumption is based on his performance over the years, but I am expecting big improvement this off season by him, now he knows what being in a title wannabe contender team demands, too many years in Sac town only working in his offensive games, now he will work on his defense, one month into the season and we can have a more accurate opinion of what he will be, I bet Martin will have a "Next level" kind of season

This thread is right on the money, but 99% of the players are like this, You say LA and Boston, but for me, the work, especially Boston, on the defense is made by staff, for me Garnett, Pierce Allen are pretty average on individual defense, but all together they simply kill teams, what they have is above average IQ, they are not as athletic as they were, but why do you need to jump and run like others when you don´t have the mentality, positioning and experience.
I am talking about Ray Garnet and Pierce, because we all know that offensively they have it all, and Rondo, Perkins make their game from defense, if they start gaining confidence in the offense they will start being more aggressive specially Rondo

For me you can´t compare Boston to any team, for me they are the best team, you can´t beat them at that style of game, you just can´t, you just have to have another style as polished as them.

We have a young team, so we can expect big improvement every year, let´s hope they work as hard as DM will.

    PEACE

Actually, I think Adelman will use a combination of Ariza/Battier to guard those guys. Remember, when T-Mac was still playing? Battier would always get Kobe/Manu/Melo as his defensive assignment.

I agree 100%, I'd add Brooks as another hirrible D, OTOH, Scola D is far better than what is perceived here, he lacks athleticism, but he uses intelligence ....I remember him defending pretty well to players like Amare or Dirk, and his team D is far above average....

We'll I'm not saying he's a defensive specialist, but his D is far from being that bad as implied here by many posters...

Morey and Adelman are assembling a team, making it mean more than the sum of the individual pieces. Morey isn't picking player A and player B just because they have value or untapped potential, but also because they'll be contributing to an overall plan for the team.
