If he keeps playing like this does anyone think he has a shot at getting MVP if he puts up 30/10 numbers for the rest of the season? I know, a pipedream but I am actually believing it when Yao says he "gets it." I think the Rockets can go very far in the playoffs if Yao continues his great play. He's playing like the starting All-Star and now I actually think he deserves the starting spot, especially since Shaq's ass has been on the bench all year.

He's had one 30/10 game this season and two in his career, what makes you think he's going to continue it? Yao is a great player, but averaging 30/10 and winning the MVP this year, come on.

I didn't say average 30/10 but I mean if he puts up 30/10 for the rest of the season his average would be no worse than duncan's or garnett's not counting rebounds. I know one thing, if you think Yao's gonna revert back to his 10-12 ppg days of 5/8 shooting you're crazy. Yao's the man and he's just now understanding that.

I highly doubt it! KG is gonna continue to play the way he has played, same with TD and both their teams are championship contenders. While the Rockets will make the playoffs I dont think they will win it all this year

The Rockets would have to get into the top 3. And Yao would have to continue his play for the rest of the season. I wouldnt bet on it.

But if he can get some votes that would be pretty cool.

Who cares about the MVP? What about MIP(Most Improved Player)? I'd be thrilled with 20/10 the rest of the way which would make the Rockets a strong team come playoff time.

well, for one, teams aren't going to be stupid and single team yao like the magic and knicks so yao isn't going to be getting this easy of shots all the time. teams will go back to the boston/memphis/everyone else method. and two, duncan and garnett have pretty much already made it a two man race. yao matching them in the second half isn't going to be enough to catch up from being way behind in the first half.

but i won't complain if yao feels the need to average 30/10 in the 2nd half.

Cool down, he need to be consistent number every night to have a shot for MVP. Not this year. Besides, Magic's frontline just too weak.

He need to prove himself against Shaq, TD, J. Oneal and KG.

    By the numbers;

Assume KG is the standard. He is currently averaging 24.5 pts and 13.9 rebs/game. Yao went into tonight's game averaging 16 and 9.3. Suppose Garnett continues to put up the same kinds of numbers, for Yao to get into the same statistical neighbourhood, I believe he would have to average 32.4 pts and 18.5 rebounds a game for the rest of the year.

it's not all about numbers, it's about value. while i agree that duncan and garnett are more valuable than yao to their teams ( i can't imagine the spurs and wolves without them), you can't underestimate yao's value to this team. it's almost as great. our team thrives on defense, and yao makes everyone else's defense better by taking away almost all drives to the basket.

not mvp yet... but he's definitely improving.

don't know if anybody has posted this yet, but from the ESPN recap:

Yao took advantage of a matchup against the undersized Andrew DeClercq, eight inches shorter and 55 pounds lighter, in the first half. At one point, Yao delivered a quick elbow to DeClercq's face, caught a pass from Mobley, knocked DeClercq down and dunked to give the Rockets a nine-point lead.

    THAT'S WHAT I'M TALKIN ABOUT!

Even if he did average that, you never get it the first year, you have to pay your dues. That's just the way it works.

Not too late. Too early. Not this year. Soon enough, perhaps.

He may finish in the top 10 in MVP vote this year if he is the best player on a championship contender, but winning the MVP this year is just not realistic. To win an MVP, you need 2 things: superior stats and a top-notch team record. It looks like he won't quite have either one this year.

But if Yao can finish with 18-10-2, he may have a good shot at All-NBA 2nd or 3rd team. Shaq will be All-NBA 1st team as long as he plays in 60 or so games. Who knows, maybe Shaq will miss enough games for Yao to have a serious shot at All-NBA 1st team. Who else can compete with him if he can average 20-10 for the rest of the season? Brad Miller? Ben Wallace? I don't think so.

Unless they cheat and put Tim Duncan or Jermaine O'Neal at center, Yao should have a great shot at All-NBA 2nd team.
