And now . . .Tony Moma brings us bonus coverage of Yao Ming's emergence:

Ladies and Gentlemen, Yao Ming has arrived.

“And with the #1 overall pick in the NBA Draft, the Houston Rockets select Yao Ming from China.”

This is where it all begun. With this draft pick came excitement, and with the excitement came hype, and with the hype came lofty expectations, and I am pretty sure that is safe to say the 16.4 points and 8.5 rebounds per game Yao averaged throughout his first 3 seasons in the league was not exactly what many predicted. He was not exactly putting up groundbreaking numbers prior to the All-Star break either, averaging only 19.6ppg and 9.1rbg; barely above the 18.3ppg and 8.4rbg he averaged in the 2004-2005 season.

However, something happened over the weekend. What was it exactly? According to Yao, he was not taking any performance enhancers or undergoing some sort of secret body transformation over the weekend. It was a lot simpler than that.

Yao Ming--"You can say it was because I was inspired in this season. I finally thought it through,"

Yao Ming’s reason for finally thinking it through, "It was all due to the match I had with the Phoenix Suns a couple days back. In that match, I was completely shut down by their double-teaming. Once I received the ball, the Sun players were immediately all over me, and I just habitually passed the ball out to my teammates. Put it in the coach's words, they had successfully taken me out of that match. I just evaporated and disappeared from that match; the team had to play without me, even though I was still physically on the court."

Please take note that 11 days after that game, he went on to score 27 points and grab 18 rebounds against the Phoenix Suns, facing the exact same defense again. With that being said, I have now officially concluded that a game where Yao Ming scored just 6 points, grabbed 0 rebounds and had 0 assists has turned out to be arguably the biggest game of his entire career, by far.

Okay, maybe that is an exaggeration but the numbers speak for themselves. In 11 games since the All-Star Break, Yao has posted a remarkable 28.2 points per game, 12.9 rebounds, and 2.3 blocks per game. He has been a force inside for the past 2½ weeks, and those within the Rockets organization as well as the rest of the league are starting to take notice.

Houston Rocket Forward, Tracy McGrady--"(Yao) has been playing out of his mind. Since he's been back, he's been extremely aggressive, and he's playing with a great deal of confidence."

Los Angeles Clipper Center Chris Kaman--"He's a freak of nature. If he gets close to the basket it's impossible to stop him."

Houston Rocket Head Coach, Jeff Van Gundy-- "I'm not surprised when (Yao) plays well. He is prepared every day. He works hard every day. He's one of the few guys who doesn't need outside motivation. He is without question the best regular-season center in basketball."

Portland Trailblazer Head Coach Nate McMillan--"Yao was too much for us. We tried doubling him and playing him straight up and he had an answer for whatever we put on him. When we double-teamed him, he knocked down his shots."

Minnesota Timberwolves Head Coach Dwane Casey--"(Yao) is a big man and he's a handful for us. We tried three people on him and he is just a handful down here wrestling with him. He has really, really had a stretch of games the last couple of weeks where he has played well and been a force."

Indiana Pacer’s Forward Peja Stojakovic--"Since (Yao) has come back, he's been an unbelievable player. He's so much better this year. He's unstoppable right now. He reminds me of when Shaquille (O'Neal) was winning championships in Los Angeles."

The only remaining question left is whether or not he will be able to sustain such a high level of play for the remainder of the season. Regardless of how you look at it, 11 games is a small sample size. You cannot really analyze a stretch like this without taking into account the possibility that he may eventually come back down to earth, which is why I’ve chosen to take a look behind the numbers.

The first point to address is his consistency. Since the All-star Break, Yao has posted 20+ points for 11 consecutive games and counting, blowing away his previous career-high of 4 which dates all the way back to the February 23, 2005. What makes this stat even more significant is the fact that Yao has shot just 53.0% from the field during this stretch, which is hardly above his career-average of 52.3%. The statistics that have taken huge leaps during this streak are his field goal and free-throw attempts.

Yao Ming’s level of persistency has been right around where it should be lately. He scores at will when he faces single-coverage, and counter-acts defenses by attacking the rim aggressively. In return, the referees have slowly begun to give him the “superstar” treatment, which would explain the drastic increase in his field-goal and free-throw attempts as of late.

Here is a quote made from Yao prior to Houston’s match with the Golden State Warriors where he totaled 22 points and 21 rebounds without Tracy McGrady--"I think today I would receive a lot of attention and double-teaming. But I can't just give up and pass the ball immediately right upon double-teaming. In China (when I was young), I was trained that way: when you're double-teamed, you just pass the ball out. But the purpose of double-teaming is just not to let you receive the ball, aimed to reduce your offense efficiency. The more they try to stop you from receiving the ball, the more you should try to demand for the ball, and attack the rim, and that would break their double-teaming trap.”

Yao may not have the “killer instinct” many other great players may have had over the years, but if the way he has played in the past 11 games is a good enough indicator, he has seemed to make up for it by increasing his overall understanding of the game by finally reaching the right level of comfort with taking on the scoring burden.

So in conclusion, in a season where everything that possibly could have gone wrong for the Houston Rockets went wrong, Yao Ming’s sudden emergence has managed to be shine light on this pitch-black season.

Does this call for more expectations? Sure.

I predict him to be the next “Yao Ming” of his era, a consistent 20/10 player who is a force to handle on both ends of the floor, and may possibly be considered one of the top big men of his era. I do NOT predict him to be the next Shaquille O’Neal, a future top-5 center of all time, or whatever ridiculous expectation that happened to be placed on him upon entering the NBA. Could his ceiling be that high? Perhaps, but in the mean time, I choose to appreciate Yao for the unique player that he is, while respecting him for the level of dedication that he has displayed towards improving his game each year since he has been in the league, which has propelled him to the level he is in now.

Well, that's just plain wrong what this Tony guy did.

First he didn't credit pryuen, he copied pryuen's translation word by word and make it looks like he has some sorta inside source for the info. Second, and let's not forget, pryuen's source is Sina, who did those interviews.

I can read Chinese but I still appreciate what pryuen has done and I think his eng->chi translation is as accurate as I've seen anywhere else. So pryuen, if you want us all to email this guy and tell him what a tard he is for stealing your stuffs just let us know.
