This kid is moving up the draft boards. He has an amazing wingspan and 41" vertical. Athleticism off the charts and just turned 20. He is raw but he brings a skill we definitely need on this team, athleticism. He may be the Biyombo of this draft. If only we had Dallas's pick. Tony Mitchell Creating Buzz It's all but certain that Mitchell, a 6-foot-8, 235-pound forward with a 41-inch vertical leap and 7-foot-4 wingspan, will become the first North Texas product to play in the NBA since the 1970s. It's a matter of when... ...It's noteworthy that Oklahoma City Thunder general manager Sam Presti, San Antonio Spurs vice president of basketball operations Danny Ferry and two Dallas Mavericks scouts were among the NBA horde at the Super Pit in the two-point loss to Middle Tennessee, when Mitchell missed a potential tying tip-in high above the rim in the final seconds. When asked whether Mitchell's athleticism reminded him of anyone, one scout laughed and said Blake Griffin. Jones, a former LSU point guard, mentions a guy he played against at Georgia named Dominique Wilkins. Another scout compared Mitchell's athleticism and style to a young Shawn Marion. <iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/kS9no-OW5UE" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
Been a big fan of having this guy near the top of our draft board for a while now. http://bbs.clutchfans.net/showthread.php?t=214252
You're right. Let's get Anthony Davis with the 14th pick instead. Maybe Beal with the NY pick. Or, since this is reality, we can get the player with the most upside at his position. Mitchell is a quicker, more athletic Paul Millsap in makeup. One of the few players this deep with all-star potential. Mitchell's biggest questions is on his shoulders. Terrence Ross, Royce White, and Tony Mitchell are still the top 3 mid-late first rounders in my mind.
I am a UNT alum and some of these North TX teams are the definition of hard work. He fits a Morey mold type fit however the sun belt conference is super weak. He will be the best Mean Green baller in long while. Too bad they lost their conference champ game by had they won we'd of seen this guy in march madness
Good comparison. Nothing to write home about but in the second half of the 1st round something definitely to consider.
Sounds a bit like Millsap's and Faried's profiles coming out of college, no? Not to say he is the same as these, but if a guy has good wingspan/reach, athleticism and "motor," not playing big-time college ball and not being tall are not necessarily impossible roadblocks.
Draft Express has him listed at a 6'10 wingspan. If this is the case, then he won't be worth our own pick or NY's pick. However, if he does have a 7'4 wingspan and that 41" vert, then I would not mind drafting him. We need high risk/reward types....not some starter.
I may have to retract what I just stated. This guy is a 44% 3 point shooter with 2 attempts per game. That is very good for his size. They're comparing him to Josh Smith or Kenyon Martin. I need to read up a little more on him, but he may rise up to the range of our lottery pick.
Draft Express screwed up and listed Tony Mitchell from Alabama. Wrong measurements wrong guy. They did that on some of the tweets also. I'd have to see who is available but for our 2nd pick NY's pick I'd consider him.
Thanks for catching that. I was wondering why they said he was 6'7" in shoes. Where can we find the correct measurements?
Okay, he has till the 29th to declare. With UNT's coach leaving it's possible/likely that he'll enter the draft. BUT, some sites are calling him a SF/PF at 6'8". If that's the case, then I don't want him as a PF.
I really don't see him as a SF in the NBA, unless it's to matchup against larger lineups. I think he's more explosive than Morris, but his ball skills aren't much better in space. I still think a more athletic Paul Millsap is the most apt comparison. Even down to the level of competition they saw in college. Though Mitchell has shown range out to 3.
