I had my tonsils taken out Thursday morning. I'm about to turn 23 in a couple of weeks. Prior to the surgery, I read horror stories about the recovery. I saw that I would be bleeding for days and could nearly die of starvation since nothing would be able to go down my throat.

It's now Sunday night (Day 4). I've been drinking everything and even eating mashed potatoes. Hoping to add scrambled eggs and noodles tomorrow. In fact, I weighed myself today and saw I gained a pound. I've been drinking non-stop smoothies, Boost and soups.

I've started to put together sentences. It's going to be scabbing up within the next couple of days.

Has anyone had this procedure done? Is the worst about to creep up on me? Should I start praying now?

I ask, because, if you Google tonsillectomy, there is nothing good about the recovery. It's just a bunch of people saying they got depressed and wanted to kill themselves.

I had the procedure maybe 5 years ago or so. Its not fun by any stretch of the imagination, but this made me laugh...

Were you worried about brain function post operation? They did only take your tonsils out, right?

Always eat with your painkillers or don't take them at all. Throwing up post-op is awful. So, enjoy smoothie king, scrambled eggs, and apple sauce.

Try not to cough up your scabs.

Tonsillectomy are primitive and should not been done anymore. If you get tonsilitis, you should just use antibiotics.

I don't remember having any problems when mine were taken out.

Probably ten years ago or so... I actually have literally no remembrance of the recovery, so couldn't have been too bad.

I had my tonsils taken out 2 years ago when I was 19. It sucked.

Just drank milkshakes and apple juice everyday.

I had this done when I was about your age too.

Needless to say: it sucked. Fortunately, the worst is already behind you.

I lost about 15 lbs over the course of 2-3 weeks in my recovery. Not only that, but the liquid perc they gave me wasn't nearly as effective enough.

I heard everyone will have to get their tonsils removed in their lifetime. That used to freak me out as a kid since my friends around me were getting theirs removed left and right.

    Truth?

People die with their tonsils everyday. Rest easy.

The guy above was right, tonsilectomy is unnecessary except for extreme cases.

I snored as a kid, so I had this procedure done, but I don't remember much other than a sore throat after.

I did nearly die went the stitches busted about 3 weeks after
Nothing like swallowing massive quantities of your own blood
    then . . uhm . . .rejecting it. .. .
Ended up driving myself to the emergency room
[I was in my mid 30s . . . so i know it is worse then
    than when you younger]

Definitely for extreme cases of recurrent infection. The other big indication is sleep apnea. In children, it is the treatment of choice. In adults, it is more rare that it will be helpful, but can still be useful in selected cases.

I had the procedure done a few years back at age 30. I was doing fine for a couple of days, but the doctor kept telling me that on any day now I would experience some of the worst pain known to man. At my wife's behest, I maintained a regular intake of Vitamin C, and the second wave of pain never hit me. The nurse told me it was a medical marvel.

I had the procedure at 34 due to extreme large tonsils and chronic infections. Ended up losing about 10-15lbs. The doctor said the pain would be pretty bad because of my age and she wasn't lying. Like the other poster said make sure you take your pain medication before you attempt to eat or it'll be brutal.

For the posters who say getting tonsils out is pointless:

I HIGHLY recommend that kids get them out before they're ten if they get soar throats, strep, colds, etc. My ENT said my tonsils weren't enlarged or swollen, but I had sleeping problems and lived a life filled with soar throats bc of my "infected tonsils." Also, my mouth felt really heavy and downright gross. My tonsils were like a garbage dumpster.

If you're going to get them out, takem out before your teens. Otherwise, get them out ASAP. My dad is getting up there in age, and he snores like crazy and has sleep apnea. Tonsillectomy isn't an option for him unfortunately.

A cousin of mine got his tonsils removed and after that he gained a TON of weight. Coincidence? Maybe. Be careful man.

That's odd. I lost like 10 pounds because I couldn't eat anything solid for like 3 weeks.

Actually the doctor told me this also. I had a tonsillectomy and septoplasty at the same time. The doc said I'll lose 5-10 lbs after the surgery, but then gain A LOT of weight after. I'll keep you updated.

I had mine out when I was 36 and it was brutal. I think that the 11 day was worst than the first. I'm not just saying that to freak you out, I think that it was mostly because the pain meds became less effective for me. The funny thing is that I sing for a living and I needed to get back to work. The doc told me the earliest I could work would be 2 weeks but it would most likely be a month.

I went back right at 2 weeks even though I didn't feel ready. It was super weird and uncomfortable, but I made it through. I did lose a lot of weight though.

As rough as that was I would do it all over again because things have been so much better since I had them out. I used to have chronic tonsilitis and they were almost always inflamed, itchy, and painful from my allergies. I also don't snore and it helped my sleep apnea (though later losing 30 lbs helped the most).

Stay on top of you pain meds and make sure you eat something before taking them. I puked once bc I didn't eat enough before the pills and it was very unpleasant.

    Good luck!
