I've been thinking of picking me up a portable GPS and I see that the TomTom One seems to be a nice one for the price ($150). But I've always heard Garmin is a great brand. Any suggestions???
I have a garmin 350, and I love that thing. The software is awesome. I played with the tomtom and didn't like it as much, so I bought me a garmin. It just sucks that some of the new streets aren't on it, and I don't know how to update it.
I have a garmin and have been satisfied with it, it has locked up on me a few times though. I have my voice set to that sexy British voice. Never tried a TomTom, so can't compare. So many garmin models though. I haven't tried to update mine either, it does have a few outdated things.
As far as the outdated information on the Garmin, I called the tech support line about the Points of Interest, they have alot of restaurants that have been closed for the last 5 and 6 years on there, and left out some newer places. Response was they try to do their best, and I also ask if there was a way we could physically delete addresses in the software to fix the problem with the out of business-restaurants and he said no. As far as the compairson, let me put it this way. TomTom is a European brand, would you trust a european-made map of the U.S. more or a USA-made map? I would go with the Garmin Streetpilot 340. Cheapest model that pronounces the street names. Ex. "Turn right in 3.2 miles on I10 East" the lower models like the Streetpilot 330 just say, "turn right in 2 miles" And you can look at the map and see pretty much exactly when to turn, its just more convinent having the text-to-speach option.
Question about GPSs in general: I heard that smaller is better 'cuz you don't want to leave it in the car, so you want something that is easy to carry around with you in your pocket. Does that sound right?
I just got the Garmin 650. I would recommend any of the below. The older models: Nuvi 350 (3.5") - 300 @ Circuit city Nuvi 650 (4.3") - 300 @ Costco!!!!! <<!!!! The newer models: Nuvi 260 (3.5") - 300 @ best buy Nuvi 750 (4.3") - 494 @ best buy I recommended these models because they are the base ones with spoken street names. i think this is a very important feature. https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?cID=134
I was thinking about getting one of those and then I ended up going with a Navigon for about the same price. The thing that sold me was that you get lifetime traffic with it (I think you can get it free with the right promo, but I got it for $65). With the other ones you typically have to pay for the traffic and I think it is something like $60 per year with Garmin. Not sure about TomTom or if traffic is even available for the cheaper models.
listen to ToyCen.. the c340 (Garmin) is the cheapest/best bang for your buck if you want one with "text to speech", which as everyone is saying, is very useful/important. The base Nuvi's don't add any functionality. You pay more for a lighter weight, flatter unit, slightly larger screen. It's nice, but to me, I don't need to spend even more than I already am cause the c340 does the job just fine.
oh yeah, didn't hear about the navigon until well after I got mine. Lifetime traffic is cool.. I can't give any input on how the unit itself works or how much it costs or anything though.
Well, I just got a Garmin and the stupid thing couldn't even locate my parents street, and that street has been there since at least the 40's.
True story. I am working in Fairview Heights Missouri and had to fly into St. Louis today, I am always skeptical about cabbies and their fares. I brought my 350i just to figure it out and pulled it out during the cab ride. What a feeling of satisfaction it was to give the driver step by step instructions as to where I was going (specific to my hotel). I'll bet it saved me 20 bucks.
I got this for $90 <object width="425" height="355"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/_11-kcpjla8&rel=1"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/_11-kcpjla8&rel=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"></embed></object> It kicks MAJOR ass for the price. I used it to find my way down to a relative's house down in Texas City from College Station. Never been down there before! Came with a 2GB miniSD card. Has maps preloaded for USA/Canada, Puerto Rico, Alaska, Hawaii.
Garmins are really nice. I have a Magellan 3225 from costco for 20 bucks and it is pretty nice also. It has text to speech and the latest telenav maps. Tom Toms are good but they use teleatlas maps which aren't as accurate as the telenav maps in the US.
Sorry, Im resurrecting an old thread. Does the Garmin SP 340 allow you to zoom in and out anywhere on the map? On my g/f's 330, i could only zoom in and out from where i was located. My Sis in law had one that allowed you to zoom in and out anywhere. Can you update maps on the 340?
