I wish we could've kept this guy, but... if we can't, I sure as hell hope he doesn't escape to Dallas. Mavs are loading up coaching talent again.

Excerpt of the above article :

Tom Thibodeau, an assistant for Jeff Van Gundy when he coached the Rockets, is reportedly a candidate with the Mavs and possibly Orlando, and has interviewed for an assistant job with the Suns.

Agreed. Not the only reason, but if he had been able to stay, the defensive schemes could have been more easily retained. The system worked pretty well given we had Alston, Howard, and slow-footed centers in the rotation. I'd be uncomfortable if Dallas got a chance to pick his brain.

Yes, you're the only genius that surmised that. Congrats. We just hope he doesn't leave because we like coaches named "Tom". He's more than Yao's coach... he's a damn good coach on the sidelines.

tom is a great assistant but with or without him the rockets have improved the coaching staff.

having tom sign with a wester powerhouse would be crappy but right now the team needs to just focus on improving themselves before looking at what other teams are doing.

maybe the rockets are paying him to interview for the mavs and suns jobs in the hopes that he lands one of them and becomes a spy / inside man who can take them down from the inside.

bravo les. way to think ahead of the curve!

If he is interviewing for an assistant coach's position, then the Rockets should go all out to retain his services as well. It is not like he is interviewing for a head coach position.

My personal thoughts are that there could have been a mishandling of the situation by Rick Adelman and Morrey. First thing Adelman does is hire his former assistant. Then he starts interviewing other candidates for assistant. There has been no interest (in the press) indicated that he wants to retain Tom's services. Of course Tom would feel 'unwanted' and would want to ply his trade at a franchise that is eager to recruit him.

Sometimes, all people just want is a sign that you want them. No sign from the Rockets at all here.

I find it shocking that people think they know the internal dynamics of the Rocket's coaching staff. You probably don't even know the internal dynamics of the people YOU work for. How would you know what part of the Rocket's success and failure was Tom?

You mrean the "man-to-man"scheme? I think the rox wil be able to maintain that.

The thing about Van Gundy's defensive scheme is not that there were any magic formulas or strategies, other htan forcing teams to shoot outside if possible and emphsizing transition defense - it was effective because he was able to get players to play hard on defense on each possession, partly becuase there were a lot few possessions to play hard on than compared to many other teams. In basketbal, unlike in something like football - I don't thk it's easy to say "hey let's keep the pistons defense and the suns offense!"

Although Tom was a great coach, especially for Yao Ming, I think it's time to let the JVG era go. Adelman has his own system, and his own people. I am confident that these new coaches also have a good understanding of how to utilize Yao Ming effectively. Its not like only JVG and his coaches understand basketball 101.

It's going to be exciting to see how Yao Ming is used next year because we finally have a coach that is offensive minded, which is what T-Mac and Yao Ming excel at. If they get the other Adelman players, this team will be better than the old Sacramento Adelman team because you have two great players in T-Mac and Yao Ming.

Good bye JVG and Tom. You were a good coach, and an even better person and will be missed.

I think coaching has a lots more to it than what you just said. If that's all there is, then anyone watch basketball enough can coach. When I listen to JVG's commenting on ABC and ESPN, I would hear all the little things he mentioned that we normally don't notice. Like when to double, how hard you have to close out to your man, in what position on the floor do you place the help defender. I think defense really requires more details than offense.

I have no reason to want Elie as an assistant coach here. I don't know how many teams are beating down the doors to get him as an assistant coach, to be honest. Maybe there are a few, but here are the ones so far reported to have an interest in Thibs :

Kings - interviewed for head coach
    Mavs - assistant coach
    Suns - assistant coach
    Magic - assistant coach
    Heat - assistant coach

Prior to the season (I think) he got votes for best assistant coach in the NBA. He didn't win or even place in the top 3 or 4 from what I recall, but the ones that beat him were head coaching prospects from what I recall.

I agree, I think Thibideau deserves a shot at the big chair. Dear God hope he doesn't go to Dallas.
