I could have sworn I just saw a blurb about Gordon being traded to Houston but there's nothing on the net. Is that Hunsicker's big move?
Confirmed - it's on www.astros.com And nice that he's already in town too... Good pickup for the Astros. They really needed another reliever in there, and Gordon might be the only good one the cubs have.
Chicago Cubs Traded pitcher Tom Gordon to the Houston Astros for minor league pitcher Russ Rohlicek and two players to be named. From ESPN.COM.
Anyone know what kinda contract Gordon has? Is this a one season rental? I could be whiney and say I don't like the 'stros giving Russ up since he's prolly the top lefty in the system ('cept for greg miller maybe ) but that would be whiney of me cuz Russ is just an A baller and we get a closer. Wonder who the other two players will be though.
Gordon came off the wrong way on the news last night. I hate it when media people go up to players in their old locker rooms after just being traded. Gordon was like "I love Chicago. Chicago is my home. I'd love to come back to Chicago. Now I'm in the pennant race with the Astros"... He is a rent-a-pitcher and will 90% leave the Astros at the end of the season. Hunsicker's a smart man. The trade has a "strike clause" in which the Astros may lose only 1 player. It's a gamble.
What the hell is wrong with Gordon?? He was acting like my boy Francis when Vancouver drafted him. Who wouldn't want to leave a last place team and go to a contender over night?
What the hell? I thought there was this little thing called the trade deadline that passed about a month ago. ?!?!?!?!?Yo no comprendo??!?!? Someone explain please.
They have another deadline for the waiver deals and its August 31st. The Rockies said they might put Hampton on waivers if they can find a sucker I mean taker.
July 31st is the deadline for which players can be traded w/o having to clear waivers. If a player is put on waivers, any team can claim them(and if the team doesn't want to lose them, the team will pull him back - he can't be traded then.) Early in August, Tom Gordon was put on waivers, and made it through unclaimed, apparently, therefore he was eligible to be traded - since he'd already cleared waivers. As far as I understand it.
If worse comes to worse and Wagner and Dotel are injured or become horrendously ineffective, Gordon provides another option at closer. Though he is coming off of another injury himself, he can still be effective in the late innings and in closing out games. Assuming the cost is low, it's a good move by the Astros.
I think this is a solid move also but damn the Cards add Scott Rolen and we add Tom Gordon? Geez... it sure would have been nice to have Gordon at the beginning of the season so scrubs like Puffer and Linebrink never would have been used.
this reminds me of the mike williams trade last season when we got him from the pirates. then at the end of the season, he signed a fat contract with pittsburgh to return as the closer
