...don't release big budget action movies after June last weekend: The Island - $125 million to produce, $12.7 million opening weekend this weekend: Stealth - $100 million to produce, $13.5 million opening weekend next weekend: Dukes of Hazzard.... uhh yeah, I think I'll go see March of the Penguins
My thoughts exactly. Stealth looks exceptionally bad, The Island looks like a DVD rental, and The Dukes of Hazzard is going to be a ****ty remake. I actually think that DOH will do ok at the box office but nothing spectacular. Its target audience will see it just because of who is in it.
I don't know...They've been marketing the hell out of that movie, plus the ads have been pushing the comedic elements instead of the action. Threre are also tons of Dukes of Hazzard fans out there. Finally, don't forget the four magic words....half nekkid Jessica Simpson. The first two movies bombed because people are sick of the big budget action movies by late June/early August. I just threw Dukes of Hazzard in there because I don't care to see it. I'm kinda summer movied out right now...
I think they would have done better, at least in the opening weekend. In May, kids aren't out of school or are just getting out of school, and movie audiences are really excited about the summer movies and spend more money than in the late summer...
I think Stealth looks interesting from an intense action and special effects standpoint. IMO, those types of movies should come out right when the kids are let out for summer break. The mid-end of summer break is tough because parents are spending their money on getting their kids back to school or summer vacations.
The lesson that Hollywood should learn is to begin to use some original idea with some original plots instead of just trying to bank all the time off of older material a la Duke of Hazzard, Bewitched, War of the Worlds, Willy Wonka and the Choco. Factory, The HoneyMooners, etc etc I'm just so sick of all the rehashed material...
I actually think DOH is going to be hilarious. Those two guys are funny and the dude from Broken Lizard is directing it.
I must be one of the few that likes the commercials for Stealth. I thought it looked pretty sweet - like a 21st century Top Gun, hopefully without the romance.
I dunno. Something about lightning hitting a machine and thus it becoming able to control itself seems a little silly.
I have to admit that, now that they DOH commercials showing the General Lee flying through the air, I have a SLIGHT urge to see the film. But there's no way I'd pay any money to see it. Stealth gets one of the worst rankings I've seen in a long time at RottenTomatoes.com. Sounds like a real stinker.
my first reaction to the stealth trailer was 'this is going to be for jamie foxx, what catwoman was for halle barry'. no, not because they're both african americans, but they're recent oscar winners and looking for a blockbuster.
I think the main problem with this concept is - it's already been done a bazillion times. Hell, it was done in black-and-white film with Frankenstein.
