In all fairness, do we know for sure Quayle said these things? I've heard most of these attributed to him, Gore and Bush.

True, but the site I pulled this from had an email listing to request verification of each quote. Unfortunately, I was surfing, which means I wasn't there long enough to care! [IMG]

Of course, even if these are accurate Quayle quotes (and I believe they are), some of them are not even all that funny (in terms of making fun of the man).

"I'm not part of the problem. I'm a Republican." That's actually a good line, and I suspect it means exactly what Mr. Quayle meant it to mean.

The bit about Phoenix is the same. If someone were to ask me about Oklahoma, I would mention that I grew up in the Texas Panhandle. I suspect Mr. Quayle was attempting to convey something of a similar nature to that.

Some others are perfectly fine sentiments. The bit about the rioters is a perfectly fine statement, as is the low voter turnout one, the illegitimacy one, the very weird people one (I assume the joke there is that Quayle is seen as weird), the future being better tomorrow one, and the standing by the misstatements one.

Others may make sense if we know the context. And others are Quayle just tripping over his words because he wasn't all that great of a public speaker and tended to get lost during his speeches and trip over his words.

    RM95,

I first heard many of these statements around 1992 (that also gave the where and when each were said), before any of this Bush?Gore stuff started.

They may not all be true, but they were definitley first attributed to Quayle.

So, they're verifiable simply because you say they are...?

Shoot, at least when I saw these attributed to Gore and Bush, ostensibly accurate dates and places were also included.

Kagy got me all fired up again. "I'm sure I can verify those quotes", I thought. So I hit google for "quayle quotes". Sure enough, most of the quotes in the first section from the first google hit are from High Times magazine. Great, a really reliable source.

So, maybe most of these quayle quotes ARE apocryphal. High Times is one of the most common sources cited for the really outrageous quotes.

I did find one site with some pretty good Quayle-isms with reliable looking cites.

sadly, this list includes the Latin America quote (about wishing he had studied latin so he could've spoken with people on his tour of Latin America) which is most certainly false. That quote originated in a speech given by Rep. Claudine Schneider of Rhode Island. In 1989, she spoke to a Republican group and attributed that quote to Mr. Quayle. She immediately said she was just kidding, but Newsweek, Time, the Chicago Tribune, Newsday and others left out the fact that Ms. Schneider made up the quote as a joke in their reporting of the event.

So while the quote has been reported as true and continues to be used as an example of Quayle's stupidity, even though he never said it.

Just surfing the net today and stumbled across this list of true and verifiable statements made by Dan Quayle. Enjoy!

"If we don't succeed, we run the risk of failure."

"Republicans understand the importance of bondage between a mother and child."

"Welcome to President Bush, Mrs. Bush, and my fellow astronauts."

"Mars is essentially in the same orbit . . . Mars is somewhat the same distance from the Sun, which is very important. We have seen pictures where there are canals, we believe, and water. If there is water, that means there is oxygen. If oxygen, that means we can breathe."

"What a waste it is to lose one's mind. Or not to have a mind is being very wasteful. How true that is."

"The Holocaust was an obscene period in our nation's history. I mean in this century's history. But we all lived in this century. I didn't live in this century."

"I believe we are on an irreversible trend toward more freedom and democracy - but that could change."

"One word sums up probably the responsibility of any vice president, and that one word is 'to be prepared.'"

"Verbosity leads to unclear, inarticulate things."

"I have made good judgments in the past. I have made good judgments in the future."

"The future will be better tomorrow."

"We're going to have the best-educated American people in the world."

"People that are really very weird can get into sensitive positions and have a tremendous impact on history."

"I stand by all the misstatements that I've made."

"We have a firm commitment to NATO, we are a part of NATO. We have a firm commitment to Europe. We are a part of Europe."

"I am not part of the problem. I am a Republican."

"I love California, I practically grew up in Phoenix."

"A low voter turnout is an indication of fewer people going to the polls."

"When I have been asked during these last weeks who caused the riots and the killing in L.A., my answer has been direct and simple: Who is to blame for the riots? The rioters are to blame. Who is to blame for the killings? The killers are to blame."

"Illegitimacy is something we should talk about in terms of not having it."

"We are ready for any unforeseen event that may or may not occur."

"For NASA, space is still a high priority."

"Quite frankly, teachers are the only profession that teach our children."

"It isn't pollution that's harming the environment. It's the impurities in our air and water that are doing it."

"[It's] time for the human race to enter the solar system."

    Kagy,

    Are you talking to me?

If so, you really have problems, man.

They are not "true because I say so." That is really a poor reading of what I posted. I simply said that I saw them first ATTRIBUTED to Quayle long before Bush and Gore were running.

I do not know, nor do I care if he really said any of it.

Rimbaud, did you think I was talking to you?

If so, you really have problems, man.

I was talking-- as I thought it obvious-- to the initial poster, Behad. He said the statements were "true and verifiable". I simply would like a more credible verification than 'because I say they are'.

Loosen your jock strap a notch or two-- I think you're having trouble breathing through it.

Feel free to post all the trite political humor you want-- just don't claim it's ****ing factual if you can't prove it.

Yeah, it would have been hilarious if Quayle, or Gore, or Bush had said these things. That's why people have been falsely attributing the statements to them for months and even years. But, *******, after this many years of it, it's unbelievably obnoxious for someone to pop in and say, 'Huh huh, look what I just heard, these are real things Quayle said!'
