This may have been discussed before, if it has I apologize. I was wondering, with the emegence of some of Yang Yi's book and the details behind the character of Steve Francis (defending Yao in the locker room as well as the close relationship he and Yao share) what is the general concensus or thought about Steve Francis in China. Do they love him over there? Is he constantly bashed and wanting to be traded like he is on this board??? If you could give me some insight I would appreciate it.
As a rockets' fan, I like SF3 even though I hate some of his decision making and ball handling. SF3 has a big heart playing. SF3 and Yao have showed some brotherhood on the court. Hopefully, SF3 can develop fast enough, so they can stay together to fight for the glory.
I think in the beginning of the season people were upset at SF3 for not passing Yao the ball.. but the attitude has changed alot recently with people getting upset with Yao's lack of aggressiveness and he has been taking alot of heat from China fans for when the team loses (his fault or not). So like how we blame SF3 for everything that goes wrong with the Rox, fans in China blame Yao for everything that goes wrong.. maybe more so than fans here. People are starting to really like SF3 and think he was an important part of helping Yao develop as a player and hope they can both play well together and win come championships. J (according to my friends from Shanghai) but the media plays a big part of how fans feel about a player / players and so far the media seems to have embraced SF3.
just something I am curious about, but why do many chinese fans refer to Steve Francis as "SF3"? Is it easier to write his name in Chinese like that or what?
SF3 - Steve Francis (wears number 3) so you dont get confused with SF (small forward). Made sense to me so I started doing that too. J
Well... since Chinese soccer really really stinks a lot of fans have pinned their hopes on Yao Ming. Hence I think it's funny how much heat he is getting. I don't think that fans in China realize that since the break Yao is 20-10 and playing like the best center in the league. Any time he has a 14-7 now, they are whining about his lack of aggresiveness. But to answer the original question I think there are people who want the Rockets to trade Steve, like the 008 guy, but you know the percentage is if anything smaller than the CF board. This is just what I get from lurking in the Sohu and YMnet boards... it's not like I have actually talked to people in China about it or like I read them that often.
"SF3" is easy to type, so that's how they refer to him online. Verbally, they would call him "Foo Lao Da", which means something like Francis the Big Brother/Numero Uno. Fans in China has accepted Stevie's leadership role as well as his on-and-off production. They simply hope for the best for the next game without really agonizing over each of Stevie's bad decisions after games. When Rockets lose, half of them blame Yao, posting lengthy, scathing essays dissecting each "failure", while the others vigorously defend Yao. Yao occasionally gets caught up in all this and would post rebuttals. Also, there are very few trade threads.
It's an interesting dynamic that Yao has with his Chinese fans. Case in point: My parents are from China, but I was born in the US so I'm totally Americanized. Anyway I was at my dad's house earlier this year, and I wanted to watch a rockets game that was on national tv (it was the stephon marbury, MSG debut knick game btw). I figured that my dad would want to watch it too, because he is a fan of the nba, and I figured a fan of Yao. But instead of watching the game, he wanted to watch his kung fu soap opera that he has on tape. On tape for god sakes, like he couldn't watch it later. Anyway, I get my way and we start watching the game. About five minutes into the game, Yao gets the ball in the paint and misses a shot on a fade-away or something. My dad starts up with his complaining that Yao is too soft and he isn't strong or aggressive enough. That sort of surprised me because I hadn't really guaged his reaction to Yao before this. Later on in the same game, the same game! Steve gets the ball and jacks up a shot instead of passing to Yao when he had good position. So now my dad starts really b****ing that Steve is freezing Yao out and he doesn't want him to succeed and that he is jealous of Yao. And he's pretty mad about it. It just totally amazed me that on one hand he was so down on Yao's game, and on the other he was so pissed that he's being freezed out. After thinking about it for a little while, I think it breaks down to a couple of things: My dad really does want Yao to succeed, but when he plays poorly he is either ashamed or really disappointed, and that comes out in frustration. And he doesn't really watch the rockets that much because he doesn't want to watch Yao doing poorly in the games, so it is better to ignore them until Yao starts winning playoff games, when he will probably be a Yao fan in full force. I really have to say that Yao has the hopes of so many people riding on his shoulders that it really is remarkable that he hasn't been overwhealmed yet and is starting to play so well. It's really incredible.
haha... what's funny is that the NYK game was one of Yao's best of the season. He was hitting from everywhere on the floor. i love those kung-fu soap operas though!
Actually this game was the huge blowout game, where we jumped up on NY early and ended up coasting throughout. Yao had middling numbers. 15 pts 9 boards. Oh and here's funny story about the shows that my parents watch: Like I mentioned my sister and I were born in the US, so we can only speak the most basic Cantonese phrases with our parents. My sister mentioned to me that when she watches the Chinese programs with our parents, the only character that she can understand is the r****ded girl. So apparently my sister and I have the equivelent chinese language comprehension of a r****ded soap opera character.

Steve Francis¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ªÊ·µÙ·ò¡¤¸¥ÀÊÎ÷˹ Sometimes we call him ¡°Ð¡¸¥¡± or ¡°¸¥ÀÏ´ó¡±,the former sounds more friendly,and the latter sounds more valued and respectful. In fact, Yao often calls Steve ¡°¸¥ÀÏ´ó¡±in Chinese. Yes,I like Steve,because he is a great player,and he is kind and friendly to Yao,I think.
this may be little bit off topic. but today, i happen to know that another guy of china National Team's coachs(physics AssCo, names INI is AL) is offered by MAVS for free. Now yao ming got a chance to learn some MAV's style offsense.
