Ok, right now, Yao is 16 rebounds and 28 points short of averaging 20-10 for the season. Track Yao's stats on Clutch's AWESOME stats page Does it matter? No, of course not, but it is a pretty fun thing to see if he can get there. So, to make up the 28 points over the last 8 games, Yao needs to average 23.5ppg - he could do this, he just needs one or two 30 point games in there, and it could happen. To make up the 16 rebounds he needs to average 12 rebounds per game over the last 8....again....he can do that, he just needs a couple big rebounding games to make it happen. Is 20-10 important....nope...not at all, it is just fun to track...at least to me. Go Yao....let's get that train to the 20 & 10 station. CHOO CHOO !!! DD
Does it really matter? he's only a couple decimal point away. 19.6 PPG can be rounded to 20 9.8 Rebounds can be rounded to 10 But yeah i see where you're going. Looking at 20-10 is better than looking at 19.6 and 9.8. For example, looking at a 90 is better than looking at a 89
No, of course it doesn't matter....not one bit......I just think it would be something fun to cheer for....a game within the game so to speak. Honestly, I could care less.....just think it is fun to follow. DD
The team is better with him averaging a bit less, and everyone else scoring a bit more. They are harder to guard if everyone is a threat to score. And for the record, those were not "GOOD" old days....those days are coming up. DD
I think it will depend largely on how many minutes he gets. Per-36 minutes, he's averaging 21.2 and 10.5 on the season, which is almost exactly what he averaged last year per 36 minutes. The difference is that he's play nearly 4 less minutes per game. To average 23.5 ppg and 12 rpg, if he we expect him to maintain his current per-minute averages, he'd need to play about 41 or 42 minute a game in the remaining 8.
It was fun but then again the all around talent of this team was pretty crappy. JVG did fantastic witht the talent he had. I was always a big fan of JVG. Now I'm a huge fan of Rick. They both have their weaknesses in coaching but have done well when coaching this team .
Of course it doesn't matter to Rockets fans like us, but for the rest of the league and its fans, Yao will only be considered legit when he conistently averages 20-10-2. I'm just happy with how Yao has played this season considering the obstacles he and the team have had to overcome.
It will be nice if Yao can make it. But, as long as the rockets keep winning, I don't think it is a big deal.
Lol for an instance there I thought all Yao had to do was get 28 points and 16 rebounds in the next game and he would average 20-10 for the season rofl. I hope he does, I hate it when haters go, 'Yao doesn't get 20-10s! Antawn Jamison must be better than him!' I just looked it up, and the three guys who currently have 20-10 are Dwight Howard, Al Jefferson and................Zach Randolph? Duncan is almost there, 19.7 points, and of course yao is nearly there.
Hehe... I did this calculation too by myself. Really want Yao to get there. On a side note. I also love for Jose Calderon to miss 3-4 free throws in the next few weeks that Calvin Murphy will maintain the the best single season FT avg. mark. I know records are meant to be broken, but unless Yao or Brooks can ensure hitting 96% of his FT's one these years, the Rockets would lose that spot on the record book.
That's spurious logic at best. If you look at the season we won rings, Hakeem averaged MORE than his career average, not less. It's not that the team is better with Yao scoring less, it's that's how the NBA is playing him - forcing his teammates to score. It's not that the "team" is better that way. The team would be better if it found a way to have Yao score 30 points a game in my opinion.
Yao ranks 3rd on the team in terms of field goal attempts, since Brooks became the starter. 20/10 is pretty much out of the question since Yao's not the first or even 2nd option anymore.
That will never happen until Yao can get 7-10 FT's a game, which will take Stern making all refs take a class on how to properly call all the fouls that other teams commit on Yao.
Most important thing, Yao is healthy this season. If he can keep healthy with this type of stats, it's fine!
It's actually possible, 23 ppg over 10 is not really that much, especially for efficient scorer, like Yao. That's only about 13 to 15 shot attempts. If the Rockets can get him (or himself) that many shot attempts, then they are going to have some serious problems in the playoffs. I think Yao is going to have to take 15 to 21 something shots a game in the playoffs for us to even have a chance beyond the 1st round.
Different topic, for another thread, but let me just say that defenses are completely different with their ability to zone off the ball, Hakeem would still be great but I doubt seriously he would have the same averages in today's NBA. DD
