I subscribe to the Idea that you are Texan by birth since Texas has a unique nation-state status in the Federal Union.
What is birthright? You get a special title because you occupied a certain space at a certain point time? Texas was filled with cutthroat Indians, Spanish Friars and Mexicans only 300 years ago. If anything, the people who created the Texas that is there today were not from Texas, but they became Texas.
You are a Texan if you live here for any period of time. You are a NATIVE Texan if you are born here.
I remember telling my ex-wife that if you aren't born here, you get a 1% credit for every year you live here. But then again, I loathed her. A "True" Texan has to be her at least 10 years, though. And then, it depends on age.
I was born in Indiana, but moved to Texas before my 4th birthday. I've lived in Texas about 28 of my 37 years. I consider myself a Texan even though I live in California now. Oh yea, I smoked a pork butt and some Habanero sausages today. Just cuz I've left Texas, doesn't mean Texas has left me.
F**k you 713!!!! In all seriousness, I believe your a Texan if you've lived in the state for more than 50% of your life. You get credit if you went out of state for college. Consider it a direct exchange.
I probably would have voted that you had to grow up here to be a Texan, but being a Native Texan myself, and seeing it was a public poll, I couldn't pass up the chance to irritate somebody.
Given that there's one prominent guy in this country who claims to be Texan, but affects an accent and covers up a Yankee birth and upbringing, I have to say "born."
What is up with Texas thinking it's so special and unique? I always wondered that. Most states don't have such a strong culture within themselves. I've been in Texas over fifteen years. For education/tuition purposes I am a Texan. However, I could stay here for the rest of my life and know every corner of the state backwards and forwards and not be a Texan, since people think you have to grow up here. People ask where I went to high school and I explain that it's in Tennessee and they wouldn't have heard of it. I don't have that common experience of growing up here... ...and then some people think you're only "from" where you're born. My fiance brags about being a Texan while his sisters aren't because they weren't born in Texas. I think that's crazy.... what if you were born somewhere you otherwise had no connections to and didn't stay long? He thinks I'm from... Florida. (and no, you haven't heard me mention Florida before. That's because I don't remember living there... it's merely a technicality where you're born)
Born in Florida.. moved to Texas before age 2. Texan. I know my Texas history. Went to Texas schools. Root for all Houston teams. Only team I support if FL is FSU. And I vacation there, and have family there. But they all consider me a Texan.
