I was at the game in Nashville when they honored Elvin Bethea a couple years back and it seemed so odd to have him honored in a city where he never played. It was even stranger because the Titans were playing the Texans that day. Tomorrow the Titans will be retiring Warren's jersey. http://www.tennessean.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060930/SPORTS01/609300359/1027
I thought this might be of interest because of the fact that he is being honored for what he did in Houston.
I wish it was us doing it but I am glad no one will wear number 1 again. Moon did great things. When people said blacks were to stupid to be a QB he showeed everyone how ignorant a comment that was. I will always be a of the old oilers. Man what a squad. Moon Hill Givens Jeffires Slaughter/Duncan Pinkett/White Munchak Childress
This is so stupid, what's he gonna say if he's asked to give a speech? "Thank You Tennessee for uh...........nothing."
Sherv: Dont forget, Willam Fuller, Al Smith, Lamar Lathon, Bubba McDowell, Bruce Matthews. Those teams were stacked. It is shame they never broke through. Eventhough, I am a Texans fan now, I can never forget the Oilers. That being said, I hate the Titans.
I understand that its something that needs to be done from a franchise perspective... I just question why they feel the need to do it in front of fans in Tennesee who have no connection whatsoever to Moon, and why they force Moon to go out there and accept it in front of the fans of Tenessee, who won't be giving him the full ovation he deserves. I would see nothing wrong with the NFL honoring Moon in Houston, and stating that his jersey would be retired by the Titans/Oilers franchise. Moon gets to be shown some appreciation by the fans who rooted for them all those years, and the fans get one last chance to root for a guy who definied Houston football in the 80's and 90's. Then again, I think the NFL was dumb to "retire" the Oilers, but still allow all the records/etc. to be applied to the Tenessee franchise. The Browns got a fresh start, and recieved all documents/records associated with the old franchise... and you don't see Art Modell crying that he can't retire Bernie Kosar's jersey.
^Excellent point. Its a real slap in the face that they're not having the retirement ceremony in Houston at the Titans/Texans game.
Lamar Lathon, what a disappointment. I was so excited when we drafted him. Thought he was the next Robert Brazile or better even. He had some moments but never really panned out.
When I was at the Texans/Titans game in Nashville, I felt bad for Elvin Bethea since most many of the Titans fans had probably never heard of the guy. I think the Texans fans there were the most excited people in the crowd during that ceremony.
Precisely. Can *we* retire his jersey? Those were the HOUSTON Oilers (MY Houston Oilers) Warren played for, not those toothless banjo-toting hillbillies in Tennessee! If they hang it in the rafters, we should go steal it one night and return it to Houston where it belongs.
I know I wasn't the only Oiler fan to name my child "Derrick." Just one more reason Bud Adams deserves a punch in the stomach anytime he bothers being in public in this State.
There is no way in hell anyone can ever create a lineup like that again. A DOMINANT offensive line combined with 3 pro bowl wideouts and a perfect QB for the run and shoot. This is exactly why the run and shoot is pretty much impossible to pull off in the NFL. Its a nightmare to get the requisite talent needed to pull it off. The Oilers are the one team to ever assemble the right talent on the offensive side.
