Doesn't look to good for Vince starting this year. Perhaps the Titans don't have confidence in him just yet? Could the titans coaching staff possibly be kicking themselves now that they have seen how well Leinart looks with a few pre-season games under his belt even with the holdout? Was IC2000 right all along? Only time will tell. http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/story/5911706 Billy Volek's shaky performance in the preseason has apparently motivated the Tennessee Titans to move closer to signing veteran Kerry Collins, according to a report in The Tennessean. Unnamed sources familiar with the situation reportedly told the newspaper that talks between the two sides heated up over the weekend, and that plans were made Sunday for Collins to visit the team in the next couple of days and to take a physical. If Collins passes the physical and the two sides can agree on contract terms, then it is a possibility that the veteran QB could be on the roster before the team's final preseason game Friday at Green Bay. The 33-year-old Collins played the last two seasons with the Oakland Raiders, but remains unsigned and has made it clear he wants an opportunity for playing time. Last season, Collins started 15 games for the Raiders and completed 302-of-565 passes for 3,759 yards, 20 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. The Tennessean says it is unclear what role Collins would have with the team, but it is unlikely he would be willing to accept a backup role. Collins apparently has indicated he would be interested in joining the Titans, who are currently led at quarterback by Volek, the starter. Vince Young currently is the backup, and Matt Hauck is No. 3 on the depth chart. Volek completed 14 of 22 passes for 141 yards in a loss to Atlanta over the weekend. But Titans' coach Jeff Fisher said Volek missed opportunities to complete passes which could have made his statistics better. As for Collins, his agent David Dunn told The Tennessean before the start of training camp that he had been in touch with the team. Titans' GM Floyd Reese, however, shot down talk of the team's interest in Collins, reportedly saying he'd be "shocked" if something developed further. Volek is taking over for Steve McNair and has just 10 career NFL starts. Collins, meanwhile, has 145.
It says directly in the article that the move is a reflection on the play of Volek and not on the play of Young. You're reading something that isn't there. As for comparing Leinart/Young, that's a joke. Preseason football is completely and utterly meaningless.
Leinart is basically playing the same offensive in college, while Vince is learning a new one. Plus Leinart has MUCH BETTER receivers on his team. Bouldin and Fitzgerald are the new breed.
ok, i used to always say this too. but, doesn't everyone on the field play to win? this is the NFL, where taking a play off could mean you're taking the whole season off. nothing is guaranteed. that means you play to look your best. if your best shows everyone that you suck, how can anyone be optimistic about how you will perform on the field? wins/losses are meaningless during the preseason. but how players perform on the field during preseason is indicitive of what you can expect during the regular season, no?
I agree about preseason, I hate it. BUT, this does reflect somewhat on Young, if Volek is looking bad, why not demote him instead of replacing him, if Collins comes in, then that pushes Vince down to 3rd string, right? The coaches must see something to where they don't feel Vince is ready to be the guy in case Volek suks. If Kurt Warner starts sucking, I don't see the Cards going out and looking for a veteran QB to bring in, they would just plug in Leinart, same with Denver and Plummer, just plug in Cutler. Why not the same for the Titans?
This is more a reflection on Volek IMO too, or maybe they just don't want Vince to see the field in year one no matter what. Much like McNair did they want Vince to sit and learn for a while.
Actually I did. I don't remember any, if at all, of the VY supporters saying he was more NFL ready than Leinart. It's the potential of VY that caused people to want us to draft him.
i wanted the Texans to draft VY. i don't think i ever envisioned that he would instantly be the starter here.
Asking any quarterback to start as a rookie in the NFL is asking for a disaster. There are once in a generation exceptions (Marino, Roethlisberger), but by and large rookie quarterbacks are complete garbage no matter how good they will ultimately be. As for the Cards and Broncos, that's absolutely silly. Both Warner and Plummer have proven track records as capable NFL starting quarterbacks. Billy Volek does not.
I did. People wanted Vince because of his potential, not because he would deliver from day one (other than at the box office). Anyone who takes it as a negative that a rookie quarterback might not be "ready" has no understanding of the learning curve of the position.
It's not as simple as looking and playing your best. Both offensive and defensive schemes are incredibly vanilla. You're utilizing a few simple plays to essentially get in glorified conditioning drills. And for quarterbacks like Vince who frequently go outside of the pocket, you better believe Jeff Fisher is in his ear constantly telling him to take it easy because it's the preseason. How players battling for a roster spot perform in the preseason might have some relevance. But for players with a guaranteed roster spot, it's as much about staying out of harm's way as it is scoring points.
lolz. Kerry Collins. We're talking about a man who was benched in favor of Marques Tuiasosopo. If anything he'll make VY look even more like the stud he is.
if you're the Titans you're being projected to finish last or third in your division this year.. expectations are low after some terrible years, and you just let your franchise QB go.. they need to just bite the bullet and start VY, let him learn and take his lumps, it will make him better quicker.
In other washed-up former Raider QB news... Jeff George was just signed... By The Raiders. all I have to say is wtfwtfwtf.
That and honestly, why change a successful formula (ie. McNair learning first)...I would love to See VY on the field and be successful now, but there is nothing wrong with VY learning and taking his time...Hell, look at Carson Palmer, same story...Sit a Year and learn... Jeff George...Are you kiddding me...
