Growing up, I used to have the thickest head of hair ... when I used to go get haircuts every month, the hairdresser would always be like 'man, I could collect all the hair and make a few wigs out of it' and then I started college, and that was the end of that.

I started college back in 94, and the following year started to notice that I was losing hair in extreme quantities ... fast forward to today, not yet 24 (soon enough) and I'm so near bald ...

This has always been my fear ... going bald when I was young. My family doesn't have a history of this, infact my dad started balding in his late 50's after being diagnosed with low thyroid causing massive hair loss.

So ... any remedies? any tips or any other advice on how I can save my hair?

Propecia (Rx) with topical Rogaine is supposed to help, but you have to keep both away from women who may become pregnant (if she runs her fingers though your Rogaine-laden hair, no good).

The health food store may have a number of untested remedies based on either nutrition or the goal of reducing dht (di-hydro-testorone...or something like that). Wash your hair daily if you don't already, and try some of the special shampoos.

Anyway, good luck. I started losing hair in my early thirties, and tried Propecia for a while until my wife became pregnant. Then I stopped and never restarted. They say you lose all of the hair you saved if you stop the treatment, but I think my hair loss has slowed down significantly, even w/o the drugs.

    Good luck!

I don't think premature baldness is inherited from your father. It is something determined by your grandfather, as I recall...but I can't remember which side.

I actually lost all my hair when I was 21. Now, I just shave my whole head.

My father isnt bald, and neither one of my grandfathers were bald (and before some smart ass asks, i dont know if the mailman was bald or not).

My recommendation is, dont fight it or try to reverse it, just live with it. There are plenty of women that love a nice, clean shaven bald head. :D

I dunno about much premature baldness but if it's like male pattern baldness, you'd inherit it from your mother's side. If your
mother's father had it, then you'd have a 50/50 chance of getting it from your mom.

I'd go to your doctor to see what kind of baldness it is and any remedies that could be used to solve it. Not all are genetic I think...

Look at your Grandpa on your moms side. The gene is carried by the women's chromosome. Your mom's dad passes it to her and she passes it to you. Don't worry about your dad's side...dad's can't pass a baldness gene to his son....I think...

I am always worrying about losing my hair, no signs yet at 20 so things are not too bad. I'm just not a very positive person, I guess. Prevention is always the best remedy anyway.

I am never sure what the cause is and whether baldness does indeed get passed through the recessive gene from your mother's side. I've read reports that have confused me regarding that. Does anyone have a definitive answer?

I think hairlosstalk.com is quite a decent site, though it's the only one I have read in regard to baldness so there will be others out there.

I suggest searching the net and please report anything really good you may find!
