Ok...I know we've had some tip threads before. And I'm an admitted non-tipper at Sonic. No way am I tipping for fast food.

But the other morning I'm at Starbuck's at about 5:30. I'm the only one there, so it's quiet except for the conversation behind the counter. I was reading my Chronicle and sipping a lovely Cafe Mocha. The conversation starts to catch my attention...one of the girls says she usually gets a dollar in tip for a cup of coffee when someone goes through the drive-thru.

Seriously?? Is this what it's come to?? Tipping someone to make me a cup of coffee, for which I'm already paying about $4.50 for?? Maybe it's just me...but what the hell is that about?? Tipping at freaking Starbuck's???

    Umm. no.

I have no problem tipping when people aren't being paid a minimum wage salary, but yeah.... I wish somebody would give me a tip everytime I have to throw a 100 pound sack of rice in the Houston heat.

At Starbucks, I usually leave whatever coin change I receive in their tip jar, but that's it.

I wish I got a tip from every dumbass user whose screw-ups I fix in our production database, but then again, most of them can't even SPELL the word tip!

I never got tips when I worked at Starbucks. Admittedly, this was in the pre-drive thru days, but I don't see why that should change things. Starbucks workers are well-paid for the job they do (I made $7.50 an hour in 1994). I don't think they need to be tipped on top of that.

So what about tipping at the car wash? You pay 23 bucks to get it washed and your supposed to give them a few more bucks? I do it, but I don't think it should be expected unless they do an exceptional job or something. but then again they should cause your paying for that service already!

Yeah, I wasn't even a coffee drinker til I started there. But with a free pound of coffee a week and all the drinks I could consume on my shifts, I was quickly won over to the dark side. :)

Funny thing is, I never drink Starbucks now. I think their coffee tastes burnt. And I either make my espresso drinks at home (getting 40% off of a $200 machine was another perk of working there) or go to a little place by my house that's closer and cheaper.

no tipping at starbucks for me... if it was sit down place and they brought me my coffee, then maybe... but it's counter service, do you really tip for counter service?

btw, the only starbucks coffee i can stomach is the light blend and the frappucino's.... the other stuff is just way too strong.

yes...that is a good idea. next time i will bite my tongue off so i don't have to taste it. sometimes when i want some bitter coffee i will go to a starbucks. then after i have it i will realize why i never go there and won't return for 6 months when i get that strange craving again. i think i'm getting it now....thanks max   :) but starbucks isnt as bad as cici's coffeehouse. now that is some bitter stuff. i have no clue what they do to it, but they must burn it throughly before serving.

now if you want to goto a nice little coffeeshop in houston goto this one place called Vienna Coffee. its over in west houston by hwy 6 and fm 529. you can buy basically any type of coffee there and also they put out different flavors of coffee everyday. great place to go to if you want to same some different flavors and a nice calm atmosphere. its too bad its so small and the location sucks for it. there should be more places like it. they also brew a great cup of coffee.

I usually have no problem giving a buck or two to the minimum wage worker towling off my car for 20 minutes in 98 degree heat in Houston.

No, you don't tip for counter-service unless the is a minimum-wage-exception waitress. Tips are for services rendered. You may as well tip the cashier at the grocery store if you're going to tip at Starbucks. Or, if you want to consider that the poor guy has to froth the milk and find the cinnamon stick, then you need to tip the cooks at a restaurant to remain consistent.

Maybe it is my French side speaking, but I think all tipping should be abolished. Why have all the confusion? What I really hate is tips for cabs and barbers. What you are paying for is the service not the commodity. Why would you give a tip for service in addition to the fee for service. I do tip them both, but I think it is stupid.

Will Starbucks people look at you weird if you go up and order "a medium coffee"?

Do they even serve regular coffee??
